Dragster - Foggyview (english)

Version française ici.

We all noticed that for some time now, Rennes (Brittany, France) is building a strong garage rock and roll scene that is worth just as much as what’s happening in and outside France. Dragster is the drummer and the bassist of Rigg, who decided to form their own band, since their ex-colleague has left to London and then came back with Madcaps and Catfight. Indeed, it’s a little bit complicated, but to resume, Rennes is like a swingers club. Most of the bands are friends, making up and breaking up, and everybody loves it. And it smells like sweat as well…

Dragster throw some primitive rock which breaks your neck and each time I see them, it seems "Grototo" will explode his drum and Clément will end deaf because of his frenetic riffs… To be unbiased, some accidents already happened but both buddies now overcome their violent and fuzzy garage. From the first « ooh ooh ah ah » of the song “Lou L’enfer chasseur de dragons”, I feel some wild urges which makes me want to become Conan the Barbarian, holding a lager instead of a sword.

After having played with Magnetix at Mondo Bizarro, White Mystery at the Sympatic bar (RIP) and for the Tattoo Convention at Stade Rennais, they’re heading to a one month tour around France (here is the detail). They will also release a limited edition cassette « GANJA WAR » via Six Tonnes de Chair but for now you can listen to some of their songs on the freshly released Hamburger Saignant comp (Frantic City Records) and on their bandcamp.

" Hi, this is Dragster, with Clément playing well guitar and Thomas, trying to play well drums. We’re currently sitting on our sofa, 4 place Sainte Anne, Rennes and we’re basically play some « primitive » garage as the old people would say. We’re playing 2.30 min songs (not much), with larsen, fuzz guitar and minimal rhythm. Concerning the singing part, we’re telling some cool stories about sex and hamburgers and our favorite hobby is to chill out on our sofa watching reality TV shows. "

x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ?

We can’t say that we’re really open-minded people, but for us, music must be fuzzy, from the 60’s till today. Rock and roll, and most particularly, « garage », is not to play in big venue or be played on big radios, we don’t care. To play in a shithole and messing around is what gives us a boner.

x A picture ?

She’s cool, isn’t she ?

x Worst nightmare ?

To support La Rue Ketanou or this kind of band. It will never happen but the very idea of it scares me so much. And by the way, the worst thing which happened for us is already in Kaviar Special’s interview, but at the end, I kind of think that there is a fun side to run barefoot on the highway.

x The place you enjoy the most ?

We’re not fussy people, so it can be a living room, a sofa… But I think our favorite place is Rennes (Brittany, France). So much things are going on there, the energy of this city is crazy. All of the garage bands are cool and there is plenty of places to have fun.

x 3 albums :

For us, this is the basis. We still didn’t find a better album. We can say that Coachwhips made us want to form Dragster, this is our main influence.

- Bazooka - S/T :
Perfect album, perfect concert, perfect energy.

- Reatards - Teenage Hate :
This record is perfect when you want to break everything around, and Jay Reatard, what more could be said?

Dragster – Foggyview

English version here.

Marble Arch - Foggyview (english)

 Version française ici.

Marble Arch has this of incredible, not only it manages to take us far, very, very far away, but also to lose us in its proper definition.

Just considering the title (The bloom of division), this album is the definition of an in-between, an uncertainty, an emotion that we perceive as truly alive, a perfect instant, without having the first clue of why's that. That's exactly where you'll feel listening to Marble Arch. Where exactly? You won't know, but you'll be certain to be just fine there.

Dizzy, ecstatic or extraconscious, listening to this excellent album (in our views), we don't really know anymore. What we do know and what we can feel however, are those long tongues of warm air licking your face while a summer sun burns all you have left for it, as an offering. One of your hands is searching the sand, and the other holds a cone of strawberry-vanilla ice-cream, may even be mango, of which you observe the slow melting through polarized lenses. The songs keep playing one after the other, but time has stopped a long time ago. "Sunrise", "By the Lake", "Clock", "Slow motion" couldn't have been named else as they are the exact transcript of what their title seems to promise. And you, you are still there. Lying, you enjoy everything surrounding, your back is digging the perfect print in the beach, your taste buds husking the flavors of iodine and sweet gelato, a wick of hair swiping your warmed up forehead. In your ears, that enchanting melody whispered by the wind and welcoming any noise in its dance, is exactly what Yann (aka Marble Arch) composes. You might add some guitars for the perfect match, but still. If you'd turn around, you would probably see Mac Demarco and Ariel Pink holding hands, laughing, running in slow motion, lifted by the synthesizers of 10cc's "I'm not in love", under ketamin, but what we have here is way more complex.

We can find here some fragments from the Swedish, The Radio Dept, whom Yann is a big fan of, so he confides. The Reids brothers (The Jesus and Mary Chain) are obviously suspected of having been some close holidays companions during those never ending summers. In a more recent generation, we could refer to the more synthetic productions from Octa\Volta, naming François Villon, Future or even Dead under the condition, for those Dead members, that they're brought back to life, unconditionally. Maybe this resemblance is due to their youth, almost all of them breastfeeding and sucking on the same alcoholic tit of mother "Rue Saint-Michel" in Rennes, Brittany - France, or is it due to Yann's residency as Maria False's lead guitar player? This time again, it's probably something between...

So what could be a definition of... that? What genre are we listening at? "flip-flop gaze" (some holiday feeling shoegaze), "holiday wave" or "vapor gaze"... perhaps. But in the end, whatever! The definition that'll count is not the one that's given, but the one that you give to it.

Marble Arch - Foggyview

 English version here.

A quel genre a ton affaire?
