Tomy and the Cougars - The Interview (english)

When we discovered by chance their last release, Ambush, (Dead Beat Records) we immediately fell under the spell of these young lads and their straight to the point rock and roll. Because this album is indeed a punk and power pop gem, in a good way.
Ambush is also the name of the first song, let’s say a little anthem perfectly supported by all the following hits : Sacred Pleasure, Bad Boy Bondage, raging roars with hilarious lyrics, Enough, stadium song or what ? Then it keeps going on… Downtown, The Real Thing, etc…
It’s so tight and efficient, that we wanted to know more about what’s going on in Marseille, why they’re doing that, loud, fast and right.
The enjoyment turns out to be more enthusiastic when you dig it. For example, just listen to Heartbreak Macht Frei and all its songs (I Change, Punk Rock Stereo, Rockstar, Doogie the Gangbanger, Cougar Tradition…), ladies and gentlemen, it’s obvious, isn’t it?

This kind of band which makes you feel proud and happy, grabbing you straight into the pit, without rest, and you, asking yourself why your head is suddenly banging, why you sing these stupid and touching songs. This is also the opportunity to talk about one of young people, who deserves it, with lyrics to read and sing, switching from english to french without problem, with the same panache, and that talk to you, definitely.
You should also check these others bands by the way: les Concordes, Cathedrale, Police Control, Pierre et Bastien, Thee Marvin Gays, Carambolage, among others etc…

But, let’s go back to the topic, Tomy and the Cougars, they kindly answered our question, thanks to them, and keep it going guys!





x Who is Tomy and the Cougars ? and what’s the story ?

[To] The current official lineup of the Cougars is Lully (singer/guitar hero), To (singer/guitar), Emiel aka Fu Manchu (bass) and Fel at drums. We have been playing together since summer 2013, but the band exists since 2012 with Tony Destroy as former drummer, with whom we split after our 1st tour in France and Germany in spring 2013. Emiel and I promised ourselves to form a band, I can’t really remember when, but we were kids, like in highschool I guess. So we did it. Lully, Fel and I actually already played together with The Anusfletchers back in the day.


x Do you have a character or a mentor each of you could identify with?

[Fu] I would say Deedee as my favorite. Fel is more a kind of guy like Franky Costanza from Dagoba. Lully is the guitarist of Stiff Little Fingers and Tomy is Pepino, the kid in The Chorus ».


x Do you all live in Marseille?

[Fu] Tomy is in Liège right now actually. Lully is in Copenhagen to finish his novel. So right now, only Fel and I are in Marseille.





x What does Marseille represents for you ?

[To] The most beautiful city in the world, our teenage city. The city from where you must escape, to not turn around and become depressed. But also the city where I want to end / spend the end of my life. The dirtiest city as well, with all its vice/imperfections, but that won’t stop Marseille from beating all the others cities ! Fuck the Gard, the Var, Aix and Paris.

[Fu] The sun drying the shit on the pavement, 130km/h gusts in your face, some burst as well. You can see lot of things or people that you rarely meet somewhere else actually. So it shapes your nature and the perception of what’s surrounding. This is the cornerstone, a reference (not worthy for some people) that distinguishes us.


x Why doing powerpop in Marseille ?

[To] In hindsight, we definitely are not a powerpop band. That’s true that our 1st seven inch (No Way Out / Surfin' Ki Records /2014) was essentially influenced by Crusaders Of Love, Protex, The Records, Steeve E. Nix (Briefs / Cute Lepers), Barracudas, Exploding Hearts…. We were listening to that a lot at that time. Now not so much.
I don’t consider all of our others EP and albums as powerpop. We’re throwing some punk, Buzzcocks style, always with an attention to melodies and chorus that sticks to your ears, and that you can sing. And as live band, we try to smash the shit. Anyway, we do punk, not powerpop.

Besides that, it’s also true that there were a powerpop scene in Marseille not so long ago, with our buddies Departure Kids (RIP ☹), Les Concordes (killing, you have to check it !) and maybe Sunsick as well.
But traditionally, Marseille is more punk rock, with our daddies/mentors Les Jolis, Dolipranes, Irritones, La Flingue…. All these bands we saw playing and which made us want to make it. Now we’re waiting for the relief/succession.




x What are your favorites places in Marseille? I’m thinking of the lyrics in Downtown “where are you hanging around?”

[To] If I should only mention one place : La Machine à Coudre, no hesitation. Best small venue. We have a special connection there, because that’s where we saw our first gigs, and also where we played our first gig. Since that time I guess we played there like 20 times.
Then there is Lollipop, a coffee/record shop, owned by some cool old fashioned rock dudes. There are some other places but I won’t mention all of them.
However, I piss on « Le Poste à Galène », only assholes there + shit sound.

But if you want some good pizza and bad kebab, come with us, you’ll find everything you need. We always realize it’s better at home when we are away.

About the song {Downtown} : the music is from Lully, the lyrics are from me. It’s talking about all that guys and friends who went away from Marseille to make their life, in Paris, Toulouse, or Bruxelles especially, and who only come back for holidays, in general during summer. Life is funny, because actually I’m in that case this year, but I’ll be back next year.

x By the way, what are you doing at la Jonquera?

[To] It’s a private joke, I personally buy cigarettes there, the others I don’t know…
[Fu] Touring is exhausting, we need to chill out sometimes.


x A word about Olympique de Marseille ?

[To] We are not big soccer players, but I personally follow a lot soccer in general. My 2 favorites clubs are OM and West Ham. I hope that from now, with the new American owner, we’ll have some great time again, because it’s been too long it’s boring as fuck.
[Fu] They suck in Fifa, better to play with India national team.

x Your lyrics are available on your bandcamp, it’s not so common for a band, why ?

[To] It’s important for me as I always liked to read and remember lyrics from other bands. Even if most of the time I’m not proud of them, like terrible english mistakes that I found out a posteriori etc… I think it’s worth sharing them.
It’s cool for people who’d like to understand better what we’re singing, specially as Lully’s lyrics are very funny.

[Fu] Tomy has some diction problems (you really have to hear him talk, it’s worth it !) and Lully has a horrible english accent, that’s really cool because it accentuates this moronic mood we try to bring.
For me, that’s not even better, but at least I shut up ! So our online lyrics make understand what’s going on to an audience who is stupider than we are. It also highlights our favorite literary topics, namely sex (dirty, ideally speaking), relations with young chicks, but also anxiety.



x Who writes the lyrics ?

[To] We are a two-headed band : Lully and I. Both lead singing and writing. Fu is helping a bit, and really contributed to Bad Boys Bondage (Ambush / Dead Beat Records) for example.
Fel only knows « How are you » in english, and as most of our lyrics are in english, it doesn’t help…
We have 2 ways of writing and I guess you can feel it. Lully writes often with a lots of feet, which bring some kind of rhythm. I don’t really know how to sing and I’m mumbling so I can’t have more than 10 words in one sentence. I try to deal with that.
How would I defined them? ? Simple, we mainly talk about sex.

[Fu] I wrote the lyrics for 2 songs of the last album (Bad Boy Bondage + Toomy). I wanted to write some stuff on the previous records but it didn’t come. But for these 2 songs, and with a bit of help from Lully, it came almost straight, one early morning in a train.
« Bad Boy Bondage » is (again) a joke story about sex that we had with Lully, and « Toomy » is a kind of retrospective of Tomy’s masterstrokes, which I think deserved to be related.




x Your music/lyrics could remind me the Jam or am I wrong ?

[To] The Jam, really ? A parallel with The Ramones would have been more obvious in my opinion. But really, I don’t know. My Jam phase is gone since some time now and I’m not an expert of Paul Weller’s lyrics. I think all the songs I wrote are linked or about some girls.


x Could you pick one of your song which would sum you up perfectly ?

[Fu] As I said, I’m not writing so much for the band but I think we try to tell about things that matters and are close to us. For example, on the 1st album, (Heartbreak Macht Frei), 2 songs are talking about friends of our 1ast drummer Tony :
« Joe The Teeth », is about a toothless guy who went to jail and « I change » is about another weirdo who became policeman or something like that. In general, I have the impression that Lully is more into expressing his feelings (Socks/It’s up to you/The real things), it’s his failed writer side.

But for me the song which sum us up well is « Rockstar ». Really simple story : We got kicked out from our rehearsal room by some old dudes who were there before us. Since that time we want them to go to hell.



x Do you feel close to this french rock punk scene from the 70’s, 80’s ?

[To] Personally, I don’t really know it, except the Dogs and Olivensteins….

[Fu] Same for me, and I could also say I don’t know anything about anything else! For Bad Boy Bondage, it’s obvious I was thinking about Olivensteins. In terms of analogy and also simplicity, that’s true we are more into english singing. But good french lyrics are way better than some in english. We also sing in french in « Rockstar ».



x A rock and roll definition?

[To] A good rockstar is a dead rockstar.

x And your worst nightmare ?

[To] If PSG win the Champions League one day, life will become hell.

x Could you pick a picture which represents you well ? and why ?

[Fu] I think it would be the cover of « This is Porn ». If you don’t know the story behind it, you can’t get it so here we go :
We were touring in Europe, and after this show in Vienna, the boss of the venue wants to bring us for some drinks in the city. But he’s not stupid, he made us drink a lot, himself as well, then with a sneaky booze game, made us pay the bill. Unfortunately for him, we were pretty fit in terms of drinking capacities, more than he was (even if Fel threw up all of his Jagermeister while moonwalking on the way back).
When we came back at the venue, the guy fell asleep in a sofa and everything went crazy. We put a mess, cooked omelette, fought with fire extinguisher, and drank more (a mix of beer and vermouth I think).
The party should have stop there if the boss didn’t fell asleep with the keys of the flat where we were supposed to sleep, in his back pocket. So we decided to get them and take this souvenir photo : « Chapeau-boules ».


x Pick 3 inspiring records ?

[To] I’m listening to the Vaselines at the moment. Besides that, I rediscover the Spits and listen to The Breifs « Off the Charts », an album I didn’t know well, when I shower.

x Could you tell about your discography and the label involved ?



=> HEARTBREAK Macht Frei (album 10 tracks / Rat Pop! Records / 2013)
[To] Only released as a cassette (100 of 50 maybe), so really rare. I consider it as a demo album as it was our 1st recording. We sing terribly and the guitar sound is not so good.
Rudy “Rock“ Romeur (The Aggravations, The Irritones, Sun Sick, la Flingue), the recording guy, did what he could.
I really love some of the songs but I’m fed up with some others that we will never play again.
The name is a play on words with the slogan used on some nazi’s concentration camps. We didn’t make friends with this name at the beginning, particularly when we were trying to book a tour in Germany. I was getting generously insulted in the emails but finally they understood we were only « play on words nazis » and we played.

Our first vinyl release! and the 1st recording with Fel.
These are the 3 most pop songs of the band, recorded in a really short time at little Marquis Maurel’s house in his sister’s (cute) bedroom.

Again along with Surfin Ki, who put again some money on the table to make it. Back to punk, with Maurel’s recording and Rudy’s mixing. This is bomb. I think we were pretty « en chien » at that time to write the lyrics. Logically it should have been released in 2015, but this lazy ass Carlo (from Surfin Ki) took his time (and we did too !).

The new baby! We are proud of it, first of all because it’s released on this cool small American label and also because the record is consistent with some good tracks.
Sound is great, recorded again with this good old Rudy. When Dead Beat asked us to release something, we didn’t have so much songs since This is Porn, so half of the songs are old ones we always played but never recorded.
The rest is new shit we wrote in a short time (like 2 months), which was pretty stressful as the label guy put some pressure on us, but at the end everything went well.



x About the labels :

- Rat Pop! Records is us, more or less, but more precisely this dirty Jules, from Departure Kids, who takes care of it. He also booked some shows in Marseille but now he lives in Toulouse. Rat Pop ! is more an association that helped us sometimes.

- Concerning Surfin’ Ki and Dead Beat, it’s different. It started when we supported the glam / Oi ! band Giuda in Marseille in 2013. It seems they liked us.
So Lorenzo, the guitarist, sent our contact to a lot of friends and labels and that’s how Surfin ! Ki and Dead Beat wanted to work with us. Only luck !



x A wish for 2017 ?

[To] First of all, if all these presidential candidates assholes could go to hell. F*** them all. Damn, I’m happy to not live in France this year, guys, you’re gonna suffer!

Découverts par hasard via leur dernière sortie, Ambush (Dead Beat Records), on est rapidement tombé sous le charme de ces minots qui font de la musique rock comme on l’aime, droit au but. Car cet album est de fait, un bijou punk et power pop, dans le bon sens du terme.
Ambush est également la première chanson, soit un petit hymne porté avec perfection par les petites bombes qui s'ensuivent: Sacred Pleasure, Bad Boy Bondage, cris rageurs aux textes désopilants, Enough, le tube de stade ou bien? Et puis ça continue … Downtown, The Real Thing (hit final) etc…
C’est tellement tendu et sacrément efficace, qu’on s’est demandé ce qu’il se passait à Marseille, pourquoi ils font ça, vite et bien en plus.
Le plaisir se révèle aussi enthousiaste quand il creuse un peu. Allez écouter par exemple Heartbreak Macht Frei (pas faux!) et toutes ses pépites (I Change, Punk Rock Stereo, Rockstar, Doogie the Gangbanger, Cougar Tradition…), messieurs-dames, c’est évident non?

Ce genre de groupe qui rend fier et heureux, qui te prend par la gorge, sans te demander ton reste ou pourquoi ta tête bouge et te fais chanter des petits hits, salement bien foutus et bizarrement touchants. C’est aussi l’occasion de parler d’une de ces bandes de jeunes, qui compte, avec des textes à lire et à chanter, passant de l’anglais au français avec la même verve, et qui te parlent, assurément.
À conseiller dans la même veine d’ailleurs : les Concordes, Cathedrale, Police Control, Pierre et Bastien, Thee Marvin Gays, Carambolage, entre autres etc…

Bref, pour en revenir à nos moutons, Tomy and the Cougars, mis à part en savoir plus sur ces jeunes gens, que demande le peuple?

x Qui êtes-vous Tomy and the Cougars?

[To] La version actuelle des Cougars c'est Lully (chant / guitare héro), To (chant / guitare), Emiel aka Fu Manchu (basse) et Fel à la batterie. On joue tous les 4 depuis l'été 2013. Mais le groupe existe depuis début 2012 avec Tony Destroy comme 1er batteur, dont on s'est séparé peu après notre 1ere tournée Allemagne/France en avril/mai 2013. Emiel et moi avions fait la promesse de monter un groupe, je sais plus trop quand, on était gamin, en terminale sûrement. On l'a fait. Lully, Fel et moi on avait joué ensemble dans The Anusfletcher, quelques années auparavant.


x Un mentor ou personnage auquel vous vous identifieriez ?

[Fu] Pour rester classique je dirai Deedee, Fel c’est plus un mec style Franky Costanza de Dagoba, Lully c’est le guitariste de Stiff Little Fingers et Tomy c’est Pepino, le gamin des choristes.


x Vous êtes tous à Marseille en ce moment ?

[Fu] Tomy est à Liège en fait, il devrait rentrer cet été. Lully est à Copenhague pour terminer son roman. Du coup pour l’instant à Marseille il reste que Fel et moi!





x Et donc, Marseille, ça représente quoi pour vous?

[To] La plus belle ville du monde, la ville de notre adolescence, la ville où faut s'y échapper pour pas tourner en rond et finir dépressif mais la ville où j'ai envie d'y finir mes jours. La plus crasseuse aussi, avec tous ses défauts, mais ça n'empêchera pas qu'elle baise toutes les autres villes. Nique le Gard, le Var, Aix et Paris.

[Fu] Du soleil qui sèche de gros pâtés de merde sur les trottoirs, des rafales de vents à 130km/h dans ta gueule, des rafales tout court aussi. On y voit toute sorte de choses ou de personnes qu’on rencontre rarement ailleurs. Alors ça te forge le caractère et l’appréhension de ce qui t’entoure. C’est la base, une référence (peu recommandable pour certains) qui nous distingue nettement.


x Pourquoi de la power pop à Marseille?

[To] Avec un peu de recul, on est pas du tout un groupe power pop en fait.
C'est vrai qu'on a sorti notre 1er 45t (No Way Out / Surfin' Ki Records /2014) qui était essentiellement influencé par les Crusaders Of Love, Protex, The Records, Steeve E. Nix (Briefs / Cute Lepers), Barracudas, Exploding Hearts…. On écoutait beaucoup ces groupes à l'époque. Maintenant moins.
Tous nos autres EP et albums, je ne les considère pas comme “powerpop“, on envoie du punk façon Buzzocks avec toujours une recherche de la mélodie, des refrains que tu retiens et que tu peux chanter. Et en live on essaie d'envoyer le bois. Bref on fait du punk et pas de la powerpop.

Par contre c'est vrai qu'il y a eu à Marseille une tendance powerpop il n’y a pas si longtemps, avec nos potes Departure Kids (dead :(), Les Concordes (toujours en activité, de la bombasse, checkez !) et peut-être même Sunsick, mais sinon Marseille c'était et c'est traditionnellement punk rock, avec nos papas Les Jolis, Dolipranes, Irritones, La Flingue…. Tous ces groupes qu'on a vus jouer et qui nous ont donné envie. On attend la relève.



x Des endroits à conseiller ? Je pense aux paroles de Downtown, “where are you hanging around?”.

[To] Si je ne pouvais citer qu'un lieu: La Machine à Coudre sans hésiter, la meilleure petite salle de concert. On a une connexion particulière avec, puisque je pense que c'est là où on a tous vu nos premiers concerts et c'est aussi là où on a joué notre premier concert. Depuis, on a dû y jouer au moins une bonne vingtaine de fois.
Ensuite y a Lollipop, café disquaire tenu par des ringards cools du rock. Après y’a quelques autres lieux cools mais je vais pas les énumérer.
Par contre je chie sur le Poste à Galène, y a que des connards là-bas + son de merde.

Après si tu veux des bonnes pizz' et des mauvais kebab, viens, y’aura tout ce qu'il te faut. On se rend compte que c'est mieux chez nous que quand on est ailleurs.

À propos de {Downtown} : la musique c'est Lully, moi les paroles. Ça parle de tous ces mecs et tous ces potes qui se sont cassés de Marseille pour faire leur vie, vers Paris, Toulouse ou Bruxelles notamment, et qui ne reviennent que pour les vacances, surtout l'été. C'est rigolo la vie, parce que cette année je suis dans ce cas, mais je serais back l'année prochaine.

x Vous faites quoi d'ailleurs à la Jonquera?

[To] C'est une private joke: moi j'achète des clopes, les autres…
[Fu] Les tournées c’est crevant, on a besoin de décompresser parfois.


x Un mot sur l’OM, y’en a bien un qui supporte, non?

[To] On est pas des footeux, mais perso moi je suis beaucoup le foot en général et mes 2 clubs de coeur sont l'OM et West Ham. J'espère qu'à partir de cette année, avec le rachat de l'OM, on va se régaler, parce que ça fait longtemps que je me fais chier.
[Fu] Sur Fifa ça vaut quedal, autant jouer avec l’Inde.

x Vos textes sont disponibles sur votre site, c’est pas si commun, pourquoi donc?

[To] Pour moi c'est important, j'ai toujours aimé lire et retenir les paroles des autres groupes. Même si la plupart du temps je suis pas fier de mes lyrics, qu'il y a des fautes d'anglais horribles que je découvre à posteriori, je pense que ça vaut la peine de les partager.
En plus ça permet au gens qui veulent de comprendre un peu mieux ce qu'on chante, surtout que Lully écrit des paroles très drôles.

[Fu] Tomy a des problèmes de diction (faut vraiment l’entendre parler ça vaut le coup !) et Lully un accent anglais dégueu et c’est très bien parce que ça renforce le côté débile qu’on essaie de se donner.
Moi c’est pas vraiment mieux mais au moins je ferme ma gueule ! Donc les paroles permettent de décoder ce qui se passe pour un public encore plus con que nous et aussi exposer nos thèmes littéraires favoris, à savoir le sexe (crade de préférence), les liaisons avec de jeunes filles prépubères, l’angoisse aussi.



x Qui écrit les textes? et comment tu les définirais ?

[To] On est un groupe à deux têtes: Lully et moi. On est 2 lead au chant et on écrit généralement ses paroles de son coté. Fu aide un peu, et a contribué largement pour Bad Boys Bondage (Ambush / Dead Beat Records).
Fel sait juste dire « How are you » en anglais et comme on écrit en majorité des paroles en anglais, ben il nous aide pas.
On a deux manières différentes d'écrire les paroles, ça doit se sentir. Lully écrit souvent avec beaucoup de pieds, ce qui donne un certain rythme. Moi je sais pas chanter et je bafouille donc il me faut pas plus de 10 mots dans une phrase. Donc je fais avec.
Je les définirais comment ? Simple, on parle que de cul essentiellement.

[Fu] J’ai écrit les paroles pour deux morceaux du dernier album (Bad Boy Bondage + Toomy). J’avais envie d’écrire pour les précédents albums aussi mais ça venait pas. Et là, avec un peu d’aide de Lully, c’est venu presque d’un coup, en un jet, un matin très tôt dans le train.
« Bad Boy Bondage » c’est (encore) un délire sur le cul qu’on a eu avec Lully et pour « Toomy » c’est juste une sorte de bio sur les exploits de Tomy, qui selon moi méritaient d’être relatés.




x Si je dis que c’est dans la même lignée que the Jam, qu’en dis-tu ?

[To] Les Jam, vraiment ? La comparaison avec les Ramones aurait été plus compréhensible à mon sens. Après j'en sais rien, ma période Jam m'est passée y’a pas mal de temps et je suis pas un fin connaisseur des lyrics de Paul Weller. Je crois que tous les morceaux que j'ai écrits sont liés ou parlent d'une meuf.


x Est-ce que vous pouvez me prendre un titre ou un de vos textes en particulier, qui vous résumerait bien ?

[Fu] Comme je disais, j’écris pas tellement pour le groupe. Mais je pense qu’on essaie de parler de choses qui comptent pour nous, ou qui sont très proches de nous. Par exemple sur le premier album (Heartbreak Macht Frei) il y a deux morceaux qui parlent de potes de notre premier batteur, Tony.
C’est « Joe the Teeth », un mec édenté qui est allé en taule et « I Change » un autre paumé qu’est devenu flic ou gendarme, je sais plus.
Sinon j’ai l’impression que Lully est plus dans l’expression de ses sentiments (Socks/It’s up to you/The real things), c’est un peu son côté écrivain à la manque.

Mais pour moi le morceau qui nous résume bien serait sans doute « Rockstar ». L’histoire est toute simple : on s’est fait virer de notre local par un groupe de vieux qui était là avant nous, et depuis on aimerait les voir crever.



x Sur, par exemple Bad Boy Bondage, ça revient au français, et on pense évidemment à cette scène rock française des 70’s 80’s, punk synth, rock and roll etc... vous vous en sentez proche?

[To] Moi je m'y connais pas trop à la scène française, à part les Dogs et les Olivensteins….

[Fu] Idem que Tomy... sauf que je dirais en plus que je m’y connais en rien d’autre haha. Pour Bad Boy Bondage par contre c’est sûr que j’avais en tête les textes des Olivensteins. Sinon par affinité et peut être simplicité aussi, c’est vrai qu’on est plus porté sur l’anglais pour écrire. Mais je crois qu’un bon texte en français en vaut largement un en anglais, d’ailleurs « BBB » c’est pas notre seul morceau en français, y'a « Rockstar » aussi.



x Votre définition du rock and roll ?

[To] Une bonne rockstar est une rockstar morte.

x Et votre pire cauchemar ?

[To] Si le PSG gagne un jour la LDC, la vie deviendra un enfer.

x Pouvez-vous choisir une image ou photo qui vous résumerait bien ?

[Fu] Perso, mais je pense qu’on sera tous d’accord, c’est la pochette de « This is Porn ».
Sur le rendu final on capte pas bien le contexte mais en deux mots on était en tournée en Europe, je pense que c’était à Vienne. On finit le concert et le patron de la salle nous emmène boire des coups en ville. Mais le mec est pas con, faut pas croire. Il nous fait bien picoler, lui aussi se rince bien, et puis avec un jeu d’alcool il se démerde à la fin pour nous refiler l’addition…
Manque de chance pour lui ça faisait déjà quelques jours qu’on se chauffait tous les soirs, donc on était bien plus en forme (Fel a dégueulé tous ses jager en faisant un moonwalk sur le chemin du retour).
Alors de retour à la salle le mec s’est écroulé comme une merde dans un canapé (Tomy était pas loin lui non plus).
De là c’est parti en couille, on a tout retourné, on a fait des omelettes, des bastons d’extincteurs et puis on a bu encore (un mélange bière vermouth je crois).
La soirée se serait arrêtée là si le patron ne s’était pas endormi avec les clés de notre piaule dans la poche arrière de son futal.
On a donc décidé de les récupérer et au passage de faire une photo souvenir : un « chapeau-boules ».

[To] Uniquement sorti en k7 (100 ou peut-être 50), donc très rare tout ça. Un album que je considère comme une démo, vu que c'était le 1er enregistrement du groupe et qu'on joue et chante comme des pieds, et le son des grattes est pas top.
Rudy “Rock“ Romeur (The Aggravations, The Irritones, Sun Sick, la flingue), l'enregistreur, a fait ce qu'il a pu.
J'aime beaucoup certains morceaux, d'autres qui me saoulent et qu'on va surement plus jamais jouer.
Le nom c'est un jeu de mot sur le camp de travail de Dachau je crois. Ça nous a pas fait des amis au début, surtout lorsque l'on démarchait pour jouer en Allemagne. Je me suis fait copieusement insulter par mail haha. Mais au final ils ont compris qu'on était juste que des nazis des jeux de mots et on a joué.

Notre 1ere sortie vinyle ! Et le 1er enregistrement avec Fel.
Rassemble les 3 morceaux les + pop du groupe. Enregistré à l'arrache chez le petit marquis Maurel dans la chambre (coquette) de sa sœur.

Encore chez Surfin Ki qui a remis de la thune sur la table avec notre participation. Retour au punk. Maurel à l'enregistrement, Rudy au mix. De la bombe. Je pense qu'on était bien en chien à cette époque pour écrire ces paroles. Normalement il aurait du paraître en 2015 mais ce branleur de Carlo de Surfin Ki a trainé (mais nous aussi !).





=> Ambush (album 10 titres / Dead Beat Records / novembre 2016)
Le dernier bébé ! Plutôt fier car on le sort sur un bon petit label américain et que le disque est homogène avec des bons morceaux. Le son est top, enregistré avec encore ce bon vieux Rudy.
Quand la proposition de sortir sur Dead Beat est tombée, on avait pas tellement de nouveaux morceaux depuis This Is Porn. Donc la moitié des morceaux sont des vieux bons morceaux jamais enregistrés ( ou alors en démos, mais minables) mais qu'on jouait toujours.
Le reste on les a écrits et répétés spécialement pour l'album dans un intervalle de temps très court pour nous, genre en 2 mois. Pas mal de stress car le mec du label nous mettait la pression mais tout s’est bien goupillé au final. Et je suis content du résultat.



À propos des labels :

- Rat Pop! Records c'est plus ou moins nous, plus précisément c'est notre bon vieux crasseux de Jules des Departure Kids qui s'en occupe. Il organisait quelques concerts sur Marseille, mais depuis qu'il a bougé à Toulouse, il s'envoie. Rat Pop!, c’est plus une asso d'orga qu'un label car financièrement ils nous ont jamais aidé, juste quelques coups de main de temps en temps pour organiser les tournées.

- Pour Surfin' Ki et Dead Beat c'est différent. Tout a commencé en faisant la 1ère partie du groupe de star Oi/glam Giuda à Marseille fin 2013. Apparemment ils nous ont kiffés.
Lorenzo, le guitariste et celui qui s'occupe de tout dans le groupe, a envoyé nos coordonnées a beaucoup de potes et de labels et c'est comme ça que Surfin Ki et Dead Beat nous ont découvert et ont voulu bosser avec nous ! Que du cul et de la chatte donc.



x Un souhait pour 2017?

[To] Déjà que tous ces enfoirés à la présidentielle crèvent tous. Au deuxième tour que ce soit entre Valls, Le Pen et Fillon, on va se marrer…. Qu'ils aillent tous se faire enculer.
Ben déjà si Papa Noël pouvais nous amener ça sur un petit traineau ça serais sympa. Putin heureusement que j'habite pas en France cette année, vous allez en chiez les gars!

x_Halasan Bazar_Tin Foiled

We’re starting this selection with danish Halasan Bazar who are almost unknown but without doubt one of the most beautiful discoveries this year. "Tin Foiled" is being played over and over and surely will be for a good while ! Judge by yourselves... If you haven’t already done it, I invite you to check the little interview we had with Fredrik, their frontman. Their album, « How To Be Ever Happy » is brilliant and I’m saving my words. It was release as a cassette and is also downloadable through the nice label Moon Glyph. They’re preparing their next album for the beginning of 2013 which will probably benefit from a vinyl release. They would like to come and play in France so don’t hesitate to contact if you’re interested ! They deserve it, don’t they ?



x_Mac Demarco_Freaking Out the Neighborhood

This is a new release for Captured Tracks who keeps having fine tastes. 
We discovered the canadian fellow Mac Demarco with his Rock N Roll Night Club EP where he was playing some kind of crooner-wise gems. He’s coming back with a first LP « 2 », which is disconcerting because of its excellence in this kind of slacker music with fine and cheeky melodies. He will play at Point FMR in Paris the 2th of December with his labelmate Chris Cohen (who just released a great album too). Not to miss !



x_Gap Dream_A Little Past Midnight

Gap Dream is our outsider for 2012. This is the project of Gabriel Fulvimar which was first released as a cassette by Burger Records. Then the label decided to release a vinyl version as it is a great album. Their last release is the fabulous Ali Baba 7’’, out thanks to Suicide Squeeze. « A Little Past Midnight « is the b side.



x_The Mallard_Mansion

Belonging to the Castle Face Records family, the Californian Mallards released a few months ago a nice LP called « Yes On Blood ». It feels like some witches from San Francisco who are celebrating a rock and roll mass where they would force us to sing, dance and drink some alcoholized potion by listening to the sound of their diabolic sorcery. This is of course irresistible. They’re also taking part of the tribute to the Velvet Underground by covering "There She Goes". For the 45th birthday of the mythic banana album, Castle Face Records is inviting on a limited edition vinyl, the best bands from the Bay Area to cover the legendary songs. It will be released in November.



x_Ty Segall_Femme Fatale (Velvet Underground cover)

This guy never stops…. We’ll count all his gems at the end of the year… We left him last summer with the release of the album Slaughterhouse (In The Red Records) with his Ty Segall Band. This was a hurricane… Then there was the release of his great new album some weeks ago, which is called Twins (Drag City). He’s gonna do a European tour soon and will be playing the 24h of November in Paris at BBmix Festival with Chain and The Gang, The Rebel and Misfit's Galleon. He is of course also taking part in the Velvet Underground tribute with his Castle Face Records buddies. His version of Femme Fatale is obviously fatale…




x_Lantern_I Don't Know

Zach and Emily are from Philadelphia, they’re experimenting and re working, without fear, some pure breed rock and roll with a convincing nihilism. Their compositions are raw and abrasive. The result is some cult songs that it’s difficult to get out of your head. They’re friends with Dirty Beaches and they released some brilliant stuff on labels such as Bathetic Records, Night People, Electric Voice, Mammoth Cave, Craft Singles, Mean Streets... “I Don’t Know” comes from their "Burn Youth" cassette (Night People) which is a kind of compilation of their incredible first. Their last crime is called “Dream Mine" (Bathetic Records) and is pulling the volume up to eleven in a dirty and rough way… We can’t wait to see them play live.




x_Blissed Out Fatalists_Don't Stand Far Away

Following Shoegaze Archives series, Captured Tracks carry on with reissuing projects. The new subsidiary is called Body Double Ltd and is operated by Corey Cunningham (Terry Malts) and Matt Kallman. They have the same will to find forgotten bands that were part of the history of american noisy rock music. They already released Half Church and also Blissed Out Fatalist, which is a great proto punk LA band from the end of the 80’s. Their next release will be Tom Diabo and you’ll find all the information on the website. To be continued…



x_future_Citizen

These Parisian shoegaze newcomers are old friends from the Rennes underground scene. This guys must have fallen into a cauldron full of Jesus & Mary Chain vibe. If you add to this some talent, a drum machine, a guitar, a bass and a 57, you’ve got future. It’s sounding pretty well! They haven’t release a lot of stuff for now so we’re really looking for the rest!



x_Brothers in Law_Holy Weekend

Brothers in Law are our favorite Italian band with their hit “Holy Weekends” which they released some months ago on their Gray Days EP ( We were never being boring / Cf-Records / Matta Lab). I invite you to read the interview we did if you’d like to learn more about them. It was obvious that they should be on our selection and we’re looking forward to some new material soon as they’ve recorded during the summer. Ciao Ragazzo!



x_Beat Mark_Speed Of Sound

It’s not a secret that we love Beat Mark but they deserve it. Peacefully they carry on with their precious songs… They’re playing the 1th of November with Hell Shovel at l’Espace B in Paris. Lately, they released a split with Two Bit Dezperados (which is a great discovery), with the memorable song Speed of Sound. You can grab this 7’’ on the website of the brilliant Italian labels Shit Music For Shit People and Way Out There Records.



x_Bare Wires_School Days

When Matthew Melton announced a few months ago that Bare Wires were over, we were really sad as all his songs keep rocking us since some years now. This californian fellow always had a knack for creating open heart / tender heart melodies and biting riff classics. “Idle Dream” (Southpaw) has the perfect name for a farewell record and it’s definitely a lovely farewell. Here you can find everything that you like with Bare Wires but maybe the melancholy is more perceptible, as on the song “School Days”. But dry your eyes, as Melton has more than one trick up his sleeve! He’s preparing new material with his new band Warm Soda. They’ve already released some songs and notably the Velvet Underground’s cover of “I’m Waiting For My Man” du Velvet Underground for Castle Face Records album. Vive la Melton!



x_Crusaders of Love_Lonely City

The furious guys and girl from Lille are still on a crusade for the rock and roll, and what a great feeling ! Their last LP « Take It Easy But Take It » (FDH Records) was released last July and is perfect for keeping a good mood during these cold times… Their power pop is still well-polished and sharp. This is definitely a great record where their talent shows off. In the theme of the city, we have already heard e.g. The Jam - In The City, The Only Ones - City Of Fun, and now we proudly have Lonely City from the Crusaders of Love. They’re touring around France and will come back to Paris : 29/11 @ La Machine du Moulin Rouge.



x_Useless Eaters_Black Night Ultraviolet

Seth Sutton belongs to the generation of ultra prolific artists who keeps releasing stuff all the time, always with the same rage and fury where we can sense some real talent. The question is when will he stop? Sometimes it’s getting to quick for our ears, but we obviously won’t complain about it. This is not a coincidence that he has collaborated with guys such as Ty Segall and Jay Reatard (RIP). You can grab Seth’s garage punk DIY stuff (if they’re not already sold out) on labels such as Shattered, Goner, Mastermind, Jeth-Row, Goodbye Boozy, Nashville's Dead, Tic Tac Totally, Gold Tapes, Burger, Jolly Dream, Jeffery Drag, Anti-Fade… For 2012, we’ll advise you to get his last and fabulous LP “C’est Bon” (Southpaw), the 7’’ “Addicted to the Blade” (Tic Tac Totally) and lastly his EP “Black Night Ultraviolet” (Manimal Vinyl) from which this song is from. x_Scott & Charlene's Wedding _I Wanna Die

Australia is a faraway land for us Europeans but we have the chance to be connected with it through it’s great rock scene with plenty of bands as Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Twerps, Dick Diver, Total Control, Peak Twins etc… Scott & Charlene's Wedding is a new discovery even if they’re active since a while now on the underground Aussie scene. Multifaceted artist Craig Dermody (you can find his work here) is running this project and he moved recently to NYC. “I Wanna Die” is part of a sublime split record from Scott & Charlene's Wedding and Peak Twins. It has been co-released by aussie label Bed Room Suck and Night People (US). By the way we’ll soon again speak of these guys…



x_Each Other_An Instant

These Canadian newcomers have just released a new EP « Heavenly Spaced » which is very promising. This is fresh, wild and it can remind of the unforgettable band Women, in a more pop spirit. Each Other has to be discovered and they’re playing in Paris with Action Beat the 14th of November at Point FMR.



x_Sic Alps_Moviehead

The Californian veteran rockers released their new album (via Drag City) for which they took some distance to their previous lo-fi material resulting in a clear production and even some strings parts! The result is lovely and we keep thinking that these guys definitely rule…



x_Venera 4_Seabed Terror

We close this selection with some newcomers with big potential. The parisian quartet Venera 4 brings us to its dark and powerful universe with this first unreleased song “Seabed Terror”. We’ll follow them closely as this foggy shoegaze melody is unstoppable…

On débute avec les danois Halasan Bazar, qui sont pour l’instant assez inconnus mais sans conteste l’une des plus belles découvertes de l’année. Tin Foiled tourne en boucle et pour longtemps ! Jugez-en par vous-même… Si ce n’est pas déjà fait, je vous invite à aller lire notre récent entretien avec Fredrik leur frontman. Leur album « How To Be Ever Happy » est magnifique et je pèse mes mots. Il est sorti en cassette et en téléchargement sur l’excellent label Moon Glyph. Ils préparent un nouvel album qui bénéficiera logiquement d’une sortie en vinyle pour 2013. x_Mac Demarco_Freaking Out the Neighborhood

Nouvelle sortie chez Captured Tracks qui n’en finit pas d’enchainer les choix judicieux.
On avait découvert le canadien Mac Demarco avec son "Rock and Roll Night Club EP" où il jouait au crooner des bas fonds. Il nous revient avec un premier album, intitulé " 2 ", déconcertant d’excellence dans le genre musique de slacker aux mélodies fines et insolentes de facilité. Il sera en concert au Point FMR le 2 /12 avec son pote de label Chris Cohen qui a d’ailleurs lui aussi sorti un superbe album. Soirée à ne pas louper!



x_Gap Dream_A Little Past Midnight

Outsider de l’année 2012, Gap Dream, projet de Gabriel Fulvimar a tout d’abord sorti son album éponyme en cassette chez Burger Records qui a ensuite décidé de l’éditer en vinyle tellement il en vaut le coup. Gap Dreams vient également de sortir un nouveau 7’’, cette fois ci chez Suicide Squeeze, nommé Ali Baba avec en face B cette géniale chanson « A Little Past Midnight ».



x_The Mallard_Mansion

Pensionnaires de Castle Face Records, les californiens ont sorti un superbe album cette année intitulé « Yes on blood » qui ressemble à une messe rock and roll où ces sorciers et sorcières de San Francisco nous obligeraient à chanter, danser, et boire des potions alcoolisées au son de leurs incantations diaboliques mais totalement irrésistibles… Pas mal d’actu pour eux puisqu’ils sont également sur la compilation tribute to Velvet Underground avec leur reprise de "There She Goes". Ce disque réunit la crème de la Bay Area et sort en novembre à l’occasion du 45e anniversaire de l’album à la banane (toujours) via Castle Face Records.



x_Ty Segall_Femme Fatale (Velvet Underground cover)

Celui-là, il n’arrête jamais… on fera le bilan à la fin de l’année.
On l’avait laissé cet été avec son Ty Segall Band et l’album Slaughterhouse (In The Red Records) qui (sans métaphore) défonçait tout sur son passage. Il est revenu il y a quelques semaines avec un nouvel album qui tue « Twins » (Drag City). On le verra bientôt en concert lors de sa tournée européenne, et du côté de Paris au festival BBMix le 24/11 prochain avec Chain And The Gang, The Rebel et Misfit’s Galleon.
Il a bien évidemment aussi participé à la petite sauterie de reprises du Velvet avec ses copains de Castle Face Records, et sa version de Femme Fatale est vraiment… fatale…

Les américains Zach et Emily expérimentent et ré-imaginent sans se poser de question un rock and roll pur sang dans un nihilisme assumé. Leurs compositions sont brutes et abrasives et il en ressort des brûlots cultes dont on peine à décrocher. Proches de Dirty Beaches, ils ont sorti des choses impossible à louper chez plein de labels incontournables comme Bathetic Records, Night People, Electric Voice, Mammoth Cave, Craft Singles, Mean Streets... « I Don’t Know » est issue de leur cassette Burn Youth (Night People) qui compile leurs premiers travaux. Que dire à part que l’on se prend une énorme claque à les écouter… Leur dernier crime se nomme « Dream Mine » chez Bathetic Records et pousse le bouton de volume encore plus fort dans un esprit plus sale et bien sur plus jouissif. Vivement qu’on puisse les voir en vrai.




x_Blissed Out Fatalists_Don't Stand Far Away

Après les Shoegaze Archives, Captured Tracks continue dans les rééditions via leur nouvelle antenne Body Double Ltd chapotée par Corey Cunningham (Terry Malts) et Matt Kallman. Toujours dans le but de ressortir de l’oubli des groupes ayant marqué l’histoire du rock noisy américain, on a pu découvrir grâce à eux Half Church, et ici Blissed Out Fatalist, groupe post punk de Los Angeles de la fin des années 80 qui mérite vraiment le détour...
Prochaines sorties : Tom Diabo, toutes les infos sont dispo sur le site. À suivre donc…

Nouvelles têtes shoegaze parisiennes mais vieux copains de l’underground rennais, ces gens là seraient apparemment tombés dans une marmite pleine de Jesus & Mary Chain. Tu ajoutes à ça du talent + une boite à rythme, une guitare, une basse et un 57 et c’est parti ! Et plutôt bien parti d’ailleurs… Vu qu’ils n’ont pas encore sorti beaucoup de morceaux, on en redemande !

Voici nos italiens préférés et leur petit hit « Holy Weekends » qu’ils ont sorti il y a quelques mois sur leur Gray Days EP ( We were never being boring / Cf-Records / Matta Lab). Je vous invite à aller relire notre entrevue avec eux pour les découvrir un peu plus. Ils se devaient évidemment de figurer dans notre sélection. On attend avec impatience des nouvelles d’eux car ils ont enregistré plein de chose cet été. Ciao raggazo !



x_Beat Mark_Speed Of Sound

On ne va pas cacher qu’on aime bien les Beat Mark, mais bon, ils le méritent. Ils continuent leur petit bonhomme de chemin avec leurs précieuses chansons, trop rares… On peut toujours se consoler en allant les voir en concert, pour la Toussaint d’Inchallah Records à l’Espace B avec les excellents Hell Shovel.
Leur dernière sortie est un split avec Two Bit Desperados (très belle découverte d’ailleurs) avec cette belle chanson Speed Of Sound, qui nous restera dans la tête pendant bien longtemps. Vous pouvez vous le procurer sur les sites des excellents labels italiens Shit Music For Shit People et Way Out There Records.
En concert aussi à la Machine du Moulin Rouge le 29/11.



x_Bare Wires_School Days

Quand Matthew Melton a annoncé il y a quelques mois la fin de Bare Wires, on était bien triste tant ses chansons nous ont bercées ces dernières années. Le californien a toujours eu le chic pour sortir des mélodies arrache coeurs au riff dévastateurs qui rendaient la gente féminine complètement folle. « Idle Dream » porte plutôt bien son nom pour un album d’adieu (le 27/10 chez Southpaw) et c’est un bel adieu même. On y retrouve tout ce qu’on aime chez Bare Wires mais cette fois-ci teinté d’un peu plus de mélancolie, la preuve avec leur dernière chanson School Days…
Mais séchons nos larmes et rassurons-nous, Melton a plus d’un tour dans son sac et il prépare de belles choses avec son nouveau groupe Warm Soda qui a déjà sorti quelques morceaux et notamment la reprise d’ "I’m Waiting For My Man" du Velvet Underground pour l’album hommage de Castle Face Records... Vive la Melton !



x_Crusaders of Love_Lonely City

Les furieux lillois sont toujours en croisade pour le rock and roll et ça fait du bien. Leur dernier album « Take It Easy But Take It » (FDH Records) est sorti en juillet dernier et après l’avoir usé cet été, il nous permet aujourd’hui de garder le moral en ces temps gris. Leur power pop est toujours plus léchée, rageuse et encore plus acérée. Bref un super album, il est là le talent ! Dans les chansons ayant pour thème « City », on a pu compter entre autres sur The Jam et In The City, The Only Ones et City Of Fun, et bien il faudra dorénavant y ajouter Lonely City des Crusaders of Love…
En tournée dans toute la France et ils reviennent à Paris le 29/11 @ La Machine du Moulin Rouge.

L’Australie est tellement lointaine pour nous européens qu’on a heureusement la chance d’y être connecté grâce à une scène rock qui fourmille, avec entre autres Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Twerps, Dick Diver, Total Control, Peak Twins… la liste commence à être longue… Scott & Charlene's Wedding est une récente et belle découverte même s’ils s’activent depuis quelque temps déjà dans cette scène underground australienne. L’artiste électron libre Craig Dermody est derrière ce projet et a récemment déménagé à New York. « I Wanna Die » est issue d’un magnifique split avec Peak Twins qui a été sorti conjointement par les labels Bed Room Suck (Australie) et Night People (US). On reparlera d’ailleurs très rapidement de ces derniers tant leurs sorties sont de qualité…



x_Each Other_An Instant

Ces nouveaux venus canadiens viennent de sortir un EP « Heavenly Spaced » qui leur promet un bel avenir. C’est frais, désordonné et nous rappellent parfois les très regrettés Women, le côté pop en plus. C’est à découvrir absolument et ils passent en concert au Point FMR (le 14/11) avec Action Beat.

Les vétérans californiens ont sorti leur dernier album le mois dernier (éponyme chez Drag City) pour lequel ils se sont quelque peu éloignés de leurs précédents travaux au son lo-fi pour une production plus claire et affinée ou l’on y croise même des cordes ! On y perd absolument rien au change et cela les conforte dans leur propre légende tant leurs compositions en sont sublimées.

On finit sur des nouveaux venus au grand potentiel. La formation parisienne nous emmène dans son univers sombre et puissant avec leur premier morceau (en exclusivité), Seabed Terror, shoegaze brumeux et mélodie imparable, on va donc les suivre avec beaucoup d’attention…
