Foggy Girls Club's Merry Best Of 2013 - Die große Liste

2013 is coming to an end and, as an outlet, we have the impression that permission is given to speak freely. So, for this wonderful year we would like to thank:
The yelling neighbors, the bookers that forgets to book, the whole french (maybe worldwide) political landscape, One Direction, the conjuncture, the french anti-gay marriage activists, the breaking strings, the ripped drum skins, the brain drain, the dumbs that remain, the japanese government for Fukishima, Kim Jung Un, the NSA, that big guy between you and the stage, the yelling shorties... we might forget some, but well, all those or what's keeping us angry and willing to mess all up, stir up troubles like we know how.

However, and a tiny bit more seriously, we come up with a huge almost unreadable list of what we listened to and loved during the year (with probably some left behind, and we're sorry for that). No "top", no chart, because it's impossible, but a list of a hundred albums, EP's and singles that we strongly recommend you to buy blind or at least listen to.

And since we're here, we would like to give a big kiss on the cheek to all of you artists, bands, labels, record stores, gigs organizers, venues, bars, worldwide krabers and to the informed audience for this great year.

Happy New Year, keep the faith and our devoted thoughts to Mister Lou Reed.

2013 touche à sa fin et comme un exutoire, on a l'impression que c'est le moment de se dire les choses. Alors pour cette belle année on voudrait remercier :
les voisins mécontents, les tourneurs qui ne font pas tourner, les manifs pour tous, l'ensemble de la classe politique française, les One Direction, la conjoncture, les cordes qui pètent, les peaux qui cassent, la fuite des cerveaux, la sédentarité des cons, le gouvernement japonais et Fukushima, Kim Jung Un, la NSA, ce mec trop grand entre vous et la scène, les petits qui s'en plaignent etc... et tous ceux qu'on oublie forcément, qui nous donneront toujours à tous l'envie de foutre le bordel, le souk, le dawa.

Trêve de plaisanterie, nous vous avons concocté une grosse liste illisible mais pleine d’amour de tout ce qu'on a écouté et adoré (il y a surement des oublis, on s'en excuse). Pas de top parce que c'est prise de tête, mais une liste d'une centaine d'albums, d'EPs et de singles qu’on vous conseille assurément d’acheter, ou au moins écouter, les yeux fermés.

Puisqu'on est là, on va quand même glisser un chaleureux poutou à tous les artistes, groupes, labels, disquaires, organisateurs de concerts, salles, bars, Krabers du monde entier et le public avisé pour cette belle année musicale.

Bonnes fêtes de fin d’année, gardez la foi et nos pensées les plus dévouées à Monsieur Lou Reed.

Holograms - The block busters, the interview

Holograms is certainly one of our favorite crushes of 2012. For those who didn't follow, they are some young folks from the suburbian area of Stockholm expressing themselves through punk music.
It does of course not stop at this, because just after blowing our minds with their first songs (ABC City and Hidden Structure), in the beginning of the past year, we wouldn't have imagined that they could confirmed their talent with a first LP (eponymous), already a classic.
So yes, it brought us back to life and yes they can have at the same time this fire and this freshness of a musical mastery, a direction.
We picture them and this whole youth, going around in circles, locked up in those huge concrete blocks, sometimes as a social maze, or as a weight attached to their foot that keeps them from heading out of the water. Nobody's paying them any attention and that's from where they'll draw their power. If nobody sees them, then they can do what they want, explore what they like without any disturbance of any kind. This is what made Holograms.
It's grey, it's urban, but it changes into colors thanks to some pop touches that cross and melt into their punk rock, krautrock (and many other inspirations) brûlot...

Their album came out last summer on Captured Tracks and they'll be back in France this very month, with a show we're dying for at the Mo'Fo festival, on saturday 26th with many other dream bands (Feeling of Love, Datsuns, etc.).

For the record, we already met them during their first tour in France last May, and logically we went to see them again (last November) for their second show (sold out this time), at L'Espace B. What follows happened just after the show, around a beer and we talked about all and nothing...


“The first show we played was with the Vaccines. And I don’t think anyone came for us… We were like « we’re gonna play another song » and they were like « oh no… » (laughs).”






x I read you like D.A.F (Deutsche Amerikanische Freundschaft) music, could you tell us more about that?

Andreas: For me it was a big influence, in my musical tastes. I started to listen to DAF when I was a teenager (maybe when I was 14 or 15). It’s something about the drive of the music, how they do it, they have like live drums and synthesizers, the sound of it… The synthesizers, the beats, the really simple 2 beats drums, I love that, and the image they have.
But I don’t think it is a big inspiration for us as a band...

x Is it a kind of way you could experiment with Holograms future material?

I don’t think so, but I’m gonna do a synth band with Anton the drummer, who really likes this kind of stuff. He has a band called “I've Become Vapour” which is really good. He’s doing everything by himself. So we’re gonna try to do something like that.
But for Holograms, I don’t know, I don’t think we can do such a big sudden change, but maybe we’re gonna do some more synth drums and we actually bought another synthesizer, a JUNO 60.



x Did you already record new stuff?

Anton: No, not yet but we’re gonna do it as soon as we’re coming back home.
With the same guy as for the LP, he’s like a producer but not … He’s really good … and he has a lot of good ideas. Maybe he will be more motivated because now he knows there is big stake (laughs).

x Your music is surrounded by a lot of symbols (lyrics, titles), what is your though about it?

Ant: It’s a way of approaching to write lyrics. It’s about creating an atmosphere.
And: We never went to university but I’m really interested in a lot of different stuff, I really enjoy that. I read a lot of books and I want to write stuff on thing that interests me, at a personal level and on some things that can evoke emotion. I don’t want to write about generic stuff…
There is the image of Orpheo (greek), ABC city is about the suburbs where I’m living, Monolith is about Le Corbusier, the Swiss architect, I read a lot about him etc.





x Is there a kind of underground scene in Stockholm? I’m thinking about a place like Push My Buttons…

Ant: No, not really.
When we were kids, it’s like we played in different youth centers like when you’re not old enough to go to the bar, you go to some place for young kids. That’s where I started to rehearse and that’s where we played our first kind of shows. There, there is really a kind of scene with a lot of crappy bands (laughs).
And: When I was older, like 18/19 years old, I started to go to Thomas and Lotta from Push My Buttons. That’s where we met, at a show actually. They do like everything there. That one is maybe the only scene you could call underground. They were also the first guys who booked us…

x And concerning music labels?

Ant: There are not really indie labels in Stockholm, in Sweden most of them are in Gothenburg. Like Luxxury and stuff. It’s better than in Stockholm for music. It smells like fish over there (laughs), I’m kidding.
Sincerely Yours is also a really good label. If you really are into the music in Sweden, they released lots of big stuff. Like The Tough Alliance, JJ etc…

x Do you feel that there is some kind of a “new“ Nordic punk scene which is emerging these days?

And: No. They have a scene in Copenhagen; a lot of those guys come from the Posh Isolation comp. But we have nothing like that in Stockholm. We really like, Iceage, Lower but most of us didn’t know about them when we started. Iceage have been playing for a long time. I used to talk with them on myspace like 5 years ago or something, when they’re were like 13 years old (laughs) and then we just met like once…





x Last time we met, it was your first tour. Do you have some kind of foggy/weird story about it?

Ant: We have many from that tour… Well, from France, it was a wet story as our car broke down in Nantes.
And: We bought this car one day before going on tour, like for 1000 euros from this like “swedish farmer”. We got all the way down to Nantes, where it’s just started leaking oil, like crazy; you couldn’t drive for ten meters because all the oil went down/out from the car.
Ant: But I would say the best thing about our time in France was in Nantes, we met a lot of really good people we hanged out with… We played at Le Stakhanov, it was the first show where a lot of people came to see us. We played with the locals “Von Pariahs”, maybe that was the reason (laughs). We were stranded for a couple of days because the car didn’t work out and we were supposed to come to Paris to play here at l’Espace B. So we dropped the car off to a garage and we had to go there by train. Then we went by bus to Amsterdam and came back to Paris again. And the bus ride from Paris to Amsterdam was kind of the scariest moment in my life. The bus driver was fucking crazy! He ran and ran red lights all the time driving like he was a fucking racing car driver. The toilet didn’t work in the bus, it was a fucking mess. My god…Then we came back and we stayed here for like a week, at Charles’ place, it was really nice.
Then when the car was finally repaired, the guy from Von Pariahs drove it here because they have to play in Paris. So we were lucky…
Ant: It was our first tour, I think we lost 3000 euros or something. Since then we’ve been bankrupt… That’s the life of a touring band… (laughs)


x I can’t let you without having a word from you about Zlatan Ibrahimović, he’s favorite Swedish guy in France now. Did you read his biography?

Ant: No I haven’t read it, but actually, I worked at a book warehouse, and I packed that fucking book, I lifted like tons of that book… (laughs)
That’s funny because in France you say Zlatan as we do in Sweden but in Italy they say “Ibra”, this is weird. But I’m not really into football, so we should get Anton, our drummer.

And: I really like Zlatan and the funniest thing about him is a documentary about his old team Malmö FF. And he’s like a teenager, and he is so stupid (laughs).
The funny thing is the dialect from Malmö, and there is one scene where he is in a bus and he’s talking about what he’s gonna do if he’d get some money: “I’m gonna buy a Diablo, a purple Diablo, and the license plate will say “TOYS”, (and he translates in Swedish) it means toy in english” it’s so funny…
And then in another scene he’s sitting in a couch in his mother's place. Well it’s funnier in Swedish but anyways, he’s talking about his mom like “when is mom’s birthday, I don’t really know like, how old is she now? fifty? no I don’t know” then he’s like “how many kids did she have? 8? 5?” (laughs).
He’s such a weird guy, but I like him.


They're playing at festival Mo’Fo on saturday 26 of January (event here) and across France and Europe from mid january.

Holograms c’est assurément l’un de nos coups de coeur 2012. Pour ceux qui n’auraient pas suivi, ces jeunes gens viennent de la banlieue de Stockholm et s'adonnent à la musique punk.
Cela ne s’arrête bien sûr pas là, car après nous avoir soufflé avec leurs premiers titres (ABC City et Hidden Structure), au début de l’année dernière, on ne se serait pas douté qu’ils puissent confirmer avec un 1er LP (éponyme) déjà classique.
Alors oui, ça nous a réveillé, ils ont la fougue, la fraîcheur mais aussi une certaine maîtrise musicale, une direction.
On les sent, eux, comme cette jeunesse, tourner en rond, enfermés dans ces grands blocs de béton, parfois labyrinthe social, parfois boulet au pied qui vous empêche de sortir la tête de l'eau. Personne ne leur prète la moindre attention et c'est de là qu'ils puiseront cette force. Si personne ne les regarde, ils peuvent donc faire ce qu'ils veulent, explorer ce que bon leur semble sans rendre le plus petit compte. C'est donc cela qui donne Holograms.
C’est gris, fulgurant et urbain, et ce gris laisse souvent place à de la couleur grâce à des touches pop qui se croisent et s’entremêlent dans leurs brulôts punkrock, kraut et j’en passe….

Leur album est sorti l’été dernier chez Captured Tracks et ils seront de retour dans toute la France ce mois-ci pour un passage qu’on attend de pied ferme au festival Mo'Fo 2013 (25 au 27 janvier à Mains d'Oeuvres), le samedi 26 avec plein d’autres super groupes (Feeling of Love, Datsuns, etc.).

Pour la petite histoire, on les avait déjà rencontré pendant leur 1ère tournée en France en mai 2012
et on les a logiquement revu en novembre dernier lors de leur 2e tournée et 2e passage (complet cette fois-ci) à l’Espace B.
Ça s’est passé après le concert avec Andreas et Anton (qui chantent et tiennent la basse et la guitare), autour d’une bière et on a parlé de tout et de rien…

« Le 1er concert qu’on a joué pour cette tournée était en 1ère partie des Vaccines… et je pense que personne ne venait pour nous. On disait « On va vous jouer une autre chanson » et le public était là « oh non… » (rires) »








x J’ai lu quelque part que vous appréciez la musique de DAF (Deutsche Amerikanische Freundschaft), vous pouvez en parler?

Andreas: Pour moi c’est une grande influence dans mes goûts musicaux. J’ai commencé à écouter DAF quand j’étais ado, vers 14,15 ans. Il y a ce truc au niveau de la dynamique de leur musique, de comment ils la conduisent. Ils utilisent des synthétiseurs mais de la batterie live, donc le son de tout ça, les synthés, les beats, c’est très basique en 2 temps, j’aime beaucoup ça et aussi la façon dont ils se représentent. Il y a bien sur aussi Kraftwerk qui viennent de Düsseldorf.
Après ce n’est peut-être pas une grosse inspiration pour nous en tant que groupe...

x Est ce que ça peut donner des pistes pour les prochaines chansons d’Holograms au niveau des expérimentations par exemple?

And: Je ne pense pas mais je vais faire un projet “synth band” avec Anton le batteur, qui lui est très branché sur ce genre de choses. Il a déjà son propre projet “I've Become Vapour” qui est vraiment bien et où il fait tout tout seul. Donc on va peut être essayer de faire quelque chose dans le genre.
Mais pour Holograms, je ne sais pas, je ne pense pas qu’on puisse changer autant, mais peut être qu’il y aura plus de synthés différents, pour la batterie par exemple et en fait, on a justement acheté un JUNO 60…




x Vous avez déjà enregistré des nouvelles choses?

Ant : Non, pas encore mais on va le faire dès qu’on rentre à la maison. Avec le même mec que pour notre LP, il est plutôt bon et a de bonnes idées. Peut-être qu’il sera plus motivé car maintenant il sait qu’il y a plus d’enjeu ! (rires)

x On retrouve beaucoup de symboles dans vos chansons (et environnement graphique), c’est voulu ?

Ant: Oui c’est une certaine approche pour les textes. Ça permet de créer une atmosphère.
And: On n’a pas fait de grandes études mais je m’intéresse à plein de choses, en lisant beaucoup par exemple. Mon but est d’écrire sur les choses qui m’intéressent, au niveau personnel mais aussi sur ce qui peut évoquer/ provoquer de l’émotion. Je ne veux pas écrire sur des choses « génériques ».
Il y a par exemple l’image d’Orphée, ABC City parle de la banlieue où l’on vit, Monolith a pour thème Le Corbusier, l’architecte suisse sur qui j’ai beaucoup lu…





x Il y a une scène underground à Stockholm ou pas? Je pense à un lieu comme Push My Buttons ?

Non pas vraiment.
Quand on était gosse, on jouait de la musique dans les centres d’activité pour jeunes en Suède (sorte de MJC), tu fais ça quand tu n’as pas l’âge pour aller dans les bars. C’est en quelque sorte là que tu commences à répéter, à jouer et à faire tes premiers concerts. Là, il y a une sorte de scène musicale avec plein de groupes pourris ! (rires)
Plus vieux (vers 18,19 ans) on a commencé à trainer chez Thomas et Lotta qui tiennent le shop Push My Buttons et organisent des concerts. C’est d’ailleurs à l’un de leurs concerts qu’on s’est rencontré. En fait, s’il y a une scène underground c’est eux qui la font vivre, ils font tout d’ailleurs. Ils sont aussi ceux qui nous ont fait jouer les premières fois…

x Au niveau des labels, c’est pareil?

Ant: Il n’y a pas vraiment de labels indé à Stockholm, ça se passe plutôt à Göteborg, avec des choses comme Luxxury entre autres. C’est plus dynamique là bas qu’à Stockholm d’ailleurs. Ils sentent le poisson là-bas (rires), je plaisante....
Il y a aussi Sincerely Yours, un très bon label, ils ont sorti des bonnes choses comme The Tough Alliance, JJ etc…



x Est-ce que vous sentez une espèce de vague Nordique au niveau de la scène punk, par rapport aux autres groupes qu’on a pu voir émerger récemment?

Non. Ils ont une scène à Copenhague, d’ailleurs pas mal de ces groupes étaient sur la compilation Posh Isolation. Mais on n’a rien de tout ça à Stockholm. On aime beaucoup Iceage et aussi Lower mais la plupart d’entre nous ne connaissaient pas quand on a commencé. Iceage, ça fait un moment qu’ils jouent d’ailleurs, je me souviens que je leur parlais sur myspace il y a, peut être, 5 ans, ils devaient avoir 13 ans (rires)… Et sinon on ne les a rencontré qu’une fois en concert.





x La première fois qu’on s’est rencontré, c’était au moment de votre 1ere tournée qui est réputée pour être la plus galère… vous avez une petite histoire à nous raconter ?

Ant : On en a plein de cette tournée… donc on va dire une histoire qui s’est passée en France, où notre voiture est tombée en panne…
And : On l’avait acheté un jour avant de partir, pour 1000 euros à une espèce de fermier suédois. Elle roulait bien jusqu’à Nantes où elle a commencé à fuir de l’huile de partout. On ne pouvait pas conduire plus de 10 mètre car le moteur se vidait...
Ant : Bon, malgré cette galère on a aussi passé un super moment à Nantes où on a rencontré plein de gens biens avec qui on a pu profiter de l’endroit. On a joué au Stakhanov, et c’était le 1er concert où il y avait un peu de monde pour nous voir. Les locaux « Von Pariahs » jouaient avec nous donc ça explique aussi pourquoi c’était rempli (rires)…
And : La voiture était HS et on devait venir à Paris pour jouer à L’Espace B donc on l’a laissé à un garage et on a pris le train… Après ça il fallait aller à Amsterdam… On a donc pris le bus et c’était franchement l’un des moments de ma vie où j’ai eu le plus peur…. Le chauffeur était complètement dingue, il grillait tous les feux rouges et se prenait pour un pilote. En plus les WC ne fonctionnaient pas, bref c’était un bordel sans nom.
Ant : Ensuite on est revenu à Paris et on est resté quelques jours chez Charles, donc c’était plutôt cool. On a eu de la chance car les Von Pariahs jouaient à Paris et nous ont ramené la voiture….
C’était notre 1ère tournée et je crois qu’on a perdu environs 3000 euros, on est ruiné depuis… C’est la vie… (rires)

x Je ne peux pas éviter le sujet Zlatan qui est le suédois le plus connu en France. Vous avez lu sa biographie ?

Ant: Non je ne l’ai pas lu mais en fait, j’ai travaillé pour un entrepôt de bouquins, et je devais notamment emballer son putain de livre, je crois que j’en ai chargé des tonnes et des tonnes…. (rires)
C’est marrant car en France vous l’appelez Zlatan, comme nous en Suède, alors qu’en Italie par exemple ils disent Ibra… Mais moi je ne suis pas trop le foot, il faudrait plutôt demander à Anton le batteur.

And: Moi j’adore Zlatan. L’un des trucs les plus drôles sur lui est un documentaire sur son ancien club, Malmö FF où on le voit jeune, ado et il est tellement bête… (fou rires).
Il parle avec une espèce de dialecte/accent de Malmö et c’est tellement drôle…
Il y a cette scène où il est dans le bus et il parle de ce qu’il fera quand il gagnera de l’argent : « Je vais acheter une Diablo, Lamborghini, une Diablo violette. Et sur la plaque d’immatriculation, il y aura marqué « TOYS », ça veut dire jouet en anglais »…
A un autre moment, il est allongé dans le canapé chez sa mère. Bon c’est surement plus drôle en suédois mais peu importe… Donc il parle de sa mère avec son frère « C’est quand l’anniversaire de maman ? je ne sais plus, elle a quelle âge maintenant 50, 51 ? ouais je sais pas… elle a donné naissance à combien d’enfants ? 8 ? 5 ? » (rires).
C’est vraiment un mec bizarre parfois, mais je l’aime bien…

x On termine l'année 2012 avec une grosse liste assez illisible mais pleine d’amour de tout ce qu'on a écouté et adoré (il y a surement des oublis, on s'en excuse).
Pas de top car c'est beaucoup trop prise de tête mais une liste d'une centaine d'albums, d'EPs et de singles qu’on vous conseille assurément d’acheter (les yeux fermés) et on remercie chaleureusement tous les artistes, groupes, labels, organisateurs de concerts et le public avisé pour cette magnifique année musicale.
Pour information, on débutera 2013 en passant par la Suède, l’Est de la France et la Californie avec les interviews d’Holograms, Feeling Of Love et White Fence.

En attendant, bonnes fêtes de fin d’année et gardez la foi !
