" Two Cycles And A Little More ", here we go, the third album from Regal is out these days after a making full of pitfalls, as their first recordings had been lost on the way.
And it was worth waiting for as it is a truly strong and beautiful record that the french rock and roll troubadours are presenting. The will to come through a new step is totally assumed, thanks to a cleaner production which shines their songs at their best glare.
It’s was in 2011, with their first record, Possible Ending (Frantic City / Azbin), that Regal catapulted us in their fresh, young and rough universe. Then, the signs of a certain melodic talent were quickly confirmed on their 2nd LP, Misery, Redemption And Love (Azbin Records 2012), where the profoundness of their compositions takes on its full meaning.
" Two Cycles And A Little More " new album and 12 slaps to our faces, from ballads (Yaking Life, Inconstant Time feat. Paula JC Satàn…), to pure rock gems (Each To Their Own, Tar Rush etc... ) where you meet some violins, banjos, choir and other electric charges.
What we love in Regal’s music, it’s this ability to take our guts under a garage rock not as simplistic as it seems. The intransigence at the service of harmony. They’re capable of bringing us higher and further, with their tense and naïve energy, and by their thrilled rises, which make their melody tremendously touching.
It is rare to meet this kind of emotions through songs and we can also think of bands like Demon’s Claws, Country Teasers (that they’re covering Mos Eisley), Grass Widow etc… Who also, in their own way, succeeded at making us feel like that.
There is always this permanent dialog between the two guitars, which criss-cross, argue, answer to each other, along with these voices, sometime confident, sometime quavering. Then, without going into a deep analysis of the lyrics, we were touched anyway by the inspirations led by the themes of the songs, among joy, doubt, euphoria, wrath, passion, dream etc… our youth and life actually.
This is a significant record, and we’re glad that Born Bad Records is releasing it, and we hope it will get them the recognition they deserve.
Finally, it is important to mention that Regal members are hanging around since years now in the talented French DIY scene. The Regal galaxy is, between others, some ex and other bands, like Last Rapes Of Mr Teach, Strange Hands, Animal Trophies, The Skeptics, le Pécheur, Yak, Sapin... some labels like Azbin Records (run by Xavier from the band), Frantic City Records, some comic with Collectif Arbitraire, etc… it would be too long to list everybody as everything is linked but you should definitively dig into all that.
It is now time for the interview we did last year. We met the young lads during their European tour, for the Hamburg’s concert at Komet (22/05/2014).
At this occasion, we decided to take inspiration from an absurd interview of the French odd philosopher BHL. Here we go and thanks to Regal !
- Regal, who are you ?
Xavier : We are 4 assholes : Xavier, Fadi, Antoine and Caelan.
We met with Caelan on the internet, via World of Warcraft. We met Antoine because he is making great comics (Collectif Arbitraire, with Pier from Le Pécheur). And Fadi, it was by chance when we organized some gigs at our house in Belgium, La Barrière. I think it was in 2011 but we formed in Lyon (France).
- What links your new album with the previous ones ?
Caelan: There is a logical link of course but we’re always evolving. We spent a lot of time to do the first one (Possible Endings) as we had the songs since almost one year before recording, but at this time we weren’t really good musicians, we knew each other’s less well etc...
But for the second one (Misery, Redemption and Love), we composed and recorded really quickly, for example most of the lyrics were written during the making so it makes it really spontaneous. On one hand I think it’s cool but on the other hand, when you play it over and over, we can say that we could have it done better, but nevermind.
X: For the new one, I really like to do something which sounds good, not like "Alright, we play garage, we don’t care if we play bad, this is garage, this is cool..."
- But I don’t consider you especially as a garage sounding band, it is a bit simplistic I think.
X: Yes, it is a vast term. For me garage is more a movement, you plug, play, you don’t give a fuck, sounds is shit, you don’t have good instruments, you don’t know how to play but you make music and it is cool. It’s more like a momentum / impetus.
As we said, on the first album, we didn’t know how to play, I just started the guitar few months before and it was the same for Antoine on drums...
But at one point, you have the ambition to sound well and clear, that’s also why you make music. We don’t want to get stuck in the lo-fi way of doing, even if it can be very good, some are doing that very well.
I’m not saying that our previous material was shit or so, it’s just that it was our state of mind at that period, we did it spontaneously and for the next one we’d like it different.
- You’re living in the countryside, is it important for you and your music?
C: It is an individual question, and personally, I can’t live in a big city too long. I need nature, space, open space.
X: But the more you’re isolated from a city, the more it becomes DIY because you’re not in the circle, close to a scene or with people who are helping you etc... When you’re in Paris, you’ll do more events, gigs, meet people. In the countryside, you’ll meet 3 chickens and a goat, and they won’t help you to move forward. So it also becomes something where you’re on your own, and it takes more time...
C: Countryside brings you certainly more than city life. You’ve got space to rehearse, the daily life, what inspires you, the surrounding, it is different and I prefer that. It’s also easy to do nothing, and for me it is important to compose. You lose in terms of promotion but you win in terms of inspiration.
- I really consider your songs, as guts songs, they bring emotion, is it intentional ?
C: To go back to the source, me and Xavier, we started to play country together, like playing banjo, guitar, and only country or Irish songs.
It is obvious that it is scented in our music, because we really like that and listen to that a lot.
In these musics, you also hear a lot of nuance and melodies. This is really something I like in music in general, the contrast, the shades, which can make a song rising, and at its peak, it can become like trance...
So yes, it’s clear that we love country music and these stuff, like Country Teasers, Demon’s Claws, Hellshovel, it speaks to us.
We really put effort in melodies. This is a true seeking, even if the basic emotion comes often from nowhere, spontaneously. And then we try to work it on to make it come out.
X: Anyhow, the best songs you write are the result of how you feel things. This is subconscious and unpredictable. We are more looking for the melody than the energy.
C : And when we find a song which makes you feel a certain emotion, we’ll try to get to the bottom of that...
- Do you run some parallel lives ?
Xavier: I’m one-legged protagonist for a choir in south of France.
Caelan: I'm manager in a nudist camp.
Fadi : I work in a factory like a basic worker.
- Your first memory ?
C : It was a concert in Budapest which was kind of our first official show. We were touring with Le Pécheur and Animal Trophies, and as there was everybody, we improvised a gig. It was funny and organized by nice people so it was a nice party.
- Were you a good boy ?
Antoine : I yes, but I don’t know for the others.
C: Yes but it depends on where and when. We are well behaved children but a bit moronic.
- As a child, what were you afraid of ?
C : Afraid of the death. I had this recurrent dream when I was young : I was beheaded by a sickle.
F : I was afraid to be naked in the playground.
X : To be an adult.
- Did your mother tell you " I love you " ?
Regal’s mother told him often " Get a real job ", but now she says " I love you ".
- What was your father doing ?
Regal’s father is maybe the Last Rapes of Mr Teach. Because, if they wouldn’t have collapsed at one point, maybe Regal wouldn't have lived. So he ended his life to give us life. And by the way, it also concerns Le Pécheur and Animal Trophies. So it came to 3 astounding bands !
- How did you earn your first money ?
Regal never earned money.
- What did you want to become ?
To tour in better conditions, and finally to mark a little bit the music world... the rock and roll dude ! But we never really told ourselves that we could make a living with that... We like to make music in some weird places, just have fun and that people would have a good time.
- The first love, when and with whom was it ?
It was with Melvyn from Strange Hands.
And also with JC Satàn, that we met at the Last Rapes era and that we keep hanging out with and having good time. I think the first love was the Bordeaux scene. Beyond that, we can say that Regal is loyal, but we keep ending sleeping with a lot of people. We give our love to a lot of people. But always safe love !
- What is your best quality ?
Well I don’t know, I think we’re honest, more honest than some others.
We’re doing our thing honestly.
- Your biggest regret ?
X: To have wasted a lot of time.
C: No, it would be to have let our van without surveillance in Budapest the second time we went there.
X: No but no. Ok we got robbed, ok, we took shitty decisions but I really think our biggest regret is to have wasted too much time. We formed 3 years ago and we wasted too much time playing video games.
C: No I disagree.
X: Ok, well anyway we can’t agree on that one.
- Have you already stolen ? Do you remember when and what it was ?
X: A bottle in Freiburg, some cables, some jacks...
F: It was by mistake! So it doesn’t count...
C: So yes we steal but...
X : No but it’s only small things, like when we really need them. For example, at the beginning of a tour we had 2 electric cables, then after 4 gigs, one was missing so at the 5 gig, you see one, you take it.
A: But our first quality is honesty !
X: But, I think we got robbed more than what we could steal...
C: Yes, we’re stealing nice and useful things... like babycats.
F: See? The babycat point softens everything.
C: Yes, now the interview is definitely more peaceful...
- Have you already killed ?
C : We killed some gigs yeah...
X: I guess we ran over some animals on the road, like one or 2 birds...
Ah, but also a venue. It was in Herselt (Belgium), we were playing and when I announced the last 2 songs, the guy told me "alright, as soon as you’re done we destroy everything". So we did it.
- If you were allowed to kill someone, who would that be ?
F: BHL I think.
C: No, he’s pretty with his clump.
X: Well nobody, we’re peaceful people, big hippies.
- Did you already lie to your life partner?
X: No, concerning that I think we’re honest to each others.
- With whom, would you like to have a good time ?
C: Gérard Depardieu.
X: We don’t need anybody to have good time ok?
- Who do you think is sexy ?
F: Amanda Lear.
- For who was your last kiss ?
The last kiss of Regal would be for the guys at the venue Le Parapluie National in Binche (Belgium). There were only 3 persons at the gig but it was awesome.
- The last time you cried, what was the reason ?
C: For our lost songs. The first recording of our 3d album disappeared, it was like born dead... So we cried a bit for that, in our heart.
- What are you suffering from ?
X: From alcoholism !
C: From Love !
- Were you already close to death ?
The death of Regal, never. The base is strong. Regal will carry on, and live long.
- Do you believe in god ?
Yes the religion of rock and beat! The religion of Love. This is what pushes us along, because we love each others.
Fuck the gods. No god. No Money. No Limit. No god, no mattress.
- What is your little weakness ?

- 3 cultural items to bring on a desert island ?
Guitar, bass, drum.
- How much do you earn per year ?
Regal earns zero money per year but earns a lot of hope... like 1 billion hopes per year.
- Who are your true friends ?
We can’t name all our true friends so let says :
" All of you who are our true friends will recognize themselves... Big up for you guys. "
- What do you wish to your worst enemies ?
We wish them to stop stealing from us pedals, guitars and bass ! Come on, stop that, it really sucks.
- You only sleep few hours per night, but do you snore ?
X: Nobody snores here ok?
C: Let’s begin with the less worst who are Fadi and Antoine, they don’t really snore. But the others one, well...
X: Personally, if they can put me in another room, it is better for us. I snore like hell, and Caelan is beginning to do the same, the more he gets fat, the more he snores...
" Two Cycles And A Little More ", cette fois-ci est la bonne, le 3ème album de Regal sort ces jours-ci après quelques embuches, leur 1ers enregistrements ayant été perdus en route.
L’attente n’aura pas été vaine car c’est un fort bel album que nous présentent les troubadours du rock ‘n roll hexagonal. La volonté assumée de passer à un niveau supérieur est là, notamment grâce à une production plus léchée qui fait briller leurs chansons de tout leur éclat.
C’est en 2011 avec leur 1er album, Possible Ending (Frantic City Records / Azbin) que les Regal nous avaient catapultés dans leur univers porté par une rage juvénile extrêmement rafraichissante. Puis, les prémices d’un talent mélodique certain furent rapidement confirmés sur leur 2ème galette, Misery, Redemption And Love (Azbin Records 2012), où la profondeur de leurs compositions prenait tout son sens.
" Two Cycles And A Little More " donc, nouvel album et 12 chansons pour autant de claques, qu’elles soient balades (Yaking Life, Inconstant Time avec Paula JC Satàn), ou pures chansons rock (Each To Their Own, Tar Rush etc... ), où l’on croise violons, banjos, chœurs et autres saillies / charges électriques.
Ce qu’on aime chez Regal c’est cette capacité à nous prendre par les tripes sous couvert d’un rock garage pas si simpliste que ça. L’intransigeance au service de l’harmonie. Ils sont capables de nous balader haut et loin, par leur énergie, naïve et tendue, et par leurs montées exaltées qui rendent leurs mélodies terriblement touchantes.
Il est rare de ressentir de telles émotions avec des chansons, et on pensera à d’autres groupes tels que Demon's Claws, Country Teaser (dont ils reprennent Mos Eisley), Grass Widow etc... qui ont aussi, à leur manière, réussis à nous mener jusque là.
Et puis il y a toujours ce dialogue permanent entre les deux guitares qui s’entrecroisent, s’engueulent, se répondent, surmontées par des voix tantôt sûres et tantôt chevrotantes.
Enfin, sans vouloir faire une analyse poussée des paroles, on sortira touché par les inspirations évoquées, entre joie, doute, ivresse, colère, passion, rêve... notre jeunesse et notre vie en fait.
C’est un album important, (un régal mouhaha) , on se réjouit de sa sortie sur Born Bad Records, qui leur apportera, on l’espère, un peu plus de visibilité et de reconnaissance. En tout cas, ils le méritent.
Pour finir et pour l’histoire, il est important d’évoquer le fait que les membres de Regal sévissent depuis déjà quelques années dans la talentueuse scène DIY française. La galaxie Regal, c’est, entre autres, des anciens et autres groupes, Last Rapes Of Mr Teach, Strange Hands, Animal Trophies, The Skeptics, le Pécheur, Yak, Sapin... des labels comme Azbin Records (géré par Xavier du groupe), Frantic City Records, de la BD (Collectif Arbitraire) etc, il serait trop long de citer tout le monde tant tout est lié, mais c’est à découvrir absolument, à vous de creuser!
Maintenant, place à l’interview pour laquelle on a pu rencontrer les joyeux drilles l’an dernier, lors de leur concert au Komet de Hambourg le 22/05/2014 pendant leur dernière tournée européenne.
À cette occasion, nous avions décidé de leur poser des questions librement inspirées d’une interview légendaire de BHL (publiée sur lematin.ch). Voilà ce que ça donne et merci les Regal !
Xavier : On est 4 connards, Xavier, Fadi, Antoine et Caelan.
On s’est rencontré avec Caelan sur internet, sur World of Warcraft. Antoine on l’a rencontré parce qu’il fait des super bande dessinées (Collectif Arbitraire, avec entre autres Pier de Le Pécheur). Fadi par hasard quand on organisait des concerts à la maison où on habite en Belgique, La Barrière. Ça devait être vers 2011 mais on s’est formé à Lyon.
- Qu’est ce qui lie le nouvel album avec les précédents ?
X: Mais personne ne lit dans le groupe, je sais pas si t’as capté !
Caelan: Il y a une suite logique mais on évolue toujours bien sûr. On avait mis beaucoup de temps pour faire le premier (Possible Endings) , on avait les compos depuis un an, et voilà, on ne savait pas trop jouer, on se connaissait moins bien etc...
Alors que le second (Misery, Redemption and Love), on l’a composé et enregistré fissa. On avait même pas répété les morceaux et la plupart des paroles ont été composées pendant l’enregistrement.
Ce qui le rend vraiment super spontané. Ya un truc cool et y’a aussi un truc ou tu te dis bon, on aurait pu faire mieux, plus le travailler. Mais ça c’est quand tu écoutes l’album en boucle...
X: Le nouveau sera plus travaillé. J’ai vraiment envie de faire un truc cool qui sonne bien, où y’a pas de pains. Que ça ne sonne pas genre " Voilà on fait du garage, on s’en fout si on fait des pains c’est garage et c’est cool "...
- Après je ne vous considère pas spécialement comme sonnant garage, c’est parfois un peu réducteur aujourd’hui.
X: Mais oui mais c’est un mot vaste. Pour moi le garage c’est un mouvement, tu branches, tu joues, t’en a rien à cirer voilà, t’as pas de son, t’as pas de matos et tu sais pas jouer mais tu fais quand même un groupe et c’est cool. C’est vraiment un élan...
Mais à un moment donné tu as envie de faire un truc qui sonne bien et propre, c’est pour ça que tu fais de la musique aussi. On a pas envie de s’enterrer dans le truc lo-fi, même si ça peut donner bien et il y en a qui le font très bien.
C: Moi j’apprécie vraiment les 2 écoles, tu peux faire un truc bien travaillé et qui va sonner propre et faire aussi quelque chose de plus spontané, avec plus de cœur mais plus dégueu. C’est sûr que la plupart des personnes préfèrent écouter des choses plus travaillées, agréables à l’oreille.
X: Mais je dis pas que ce qu’on a fait c’est de la merde ou que je regrette. C’est juste que c’était un état d’esprit, qu’on avait fait ça spontanément et que pour le prochain ça sera différent.
- Vous vivez à la campagne, c’est important pour vous et votre musique ?
C: C’est une question individuelle, mais moi perso, je n’arrive pas à habiter dans une ville plus d’un certain temps. Il me faut de la nature, de l’espace, un espace ouvert.
X: Mais plus tu es excentré, plus ça devient vraiment beaucoup plus DIY parce que tu es plus dans ton coin. Tu n’es pas rattaché à une scène ou à des mecs qui t’aident etc... Quand tu es à Paris, tu vas faire pas mal d’évènements, tu vas rencontrer du monde. Si tu es à la campagne tu vas rencontrer 3 poules et une chèvre et elles ne vont pas t’aider à avancer... Donc tu es aussi plus seul dans ton monde, et il te faut plus de temps...
C: Il y a certainement un truc que la campagne t’apporte plus que la ville. Tu as la place pour répéter. Et même au niveau de la vie de tous les jours, ce qui t’inspire, ce que tu vois, ce que tu aimes, ou ce qui te dégoute, voilà c’est sur que ça change quelque chose. Tu peux plus facilement rien foutre quand tu es dans la campagne et pour moi c’est important pour composer. Tu perds en promotion mais tu gagnes en inspiration.
- Pour moi vous faites des chansons avec les " tripes ", qui procurent de l’émotion c’est voulu ?
C: Pour revenir aux sources, Xavier et moi on a commencé à jouer du country. On jouait à deux, banjo et guitare, et on ne faisait que des chansons de country et de musique irlandaise.
Et ça, c’est sur que c’est resté car tous les deux, on écoute beaucoup et on aime vraiment ça .
Dans ces musiques là, tu entends aussi beaucoup de nuances et de mélodies. C’est quelque chose que j’aime beaucoup dans la musique, ces contrastes et nuances qui peuvent faire monter une chanson, et à son apogée, ça peut partir en transe...
Donc c’est clair qu’on aime vachement la country et ces trucs là, Country Teasers, Demon’s Claws, Hellshovel, tout ça nous parle...
Et on se fait chier avec les mélodies. C’est une recherche, même si après, l’émotion de base survient souvent de nulle part, spontanément. Et puis ensuite on le travaille à fond et c’est là que ça ressort.
X: Les meilleurs chansons que tu écris c’est parce que tu ressens des choses de toutes façons. C’est inconscient et aléatoire et on est plus dans la recherche de la mélodie que de l’énergie.
C: Donc c’est sûr que quand on trouve un morceau qui fait ressentir une certaine émotion, on va essayer de la faire se développer jusqu’au bout...
- Menez-vous des vies parallèles ?
Xavier : Je suis intervenant unijambiste pour une chorale dans le sud de la France.
Caelan : Je suis gérant d’un centre de naturisme.
Fadi : Je travaille à l’usine comme un trimard de base.
- Votre tout premier souvenir ?
C : Le concert à Budapest peut-être qui était un peu notre 1ère date officielle. On tournait avec Le Pécheur et Animal Trophies et étant donné qu’il y avait un peu tout le monde, on avait improvisé un concert. C’était marrant et organisé par des gens super sympa donc ce fut une bonne soirée...
- Etiez-vous un enfant sage ?
Antoine : Moi oui, mais je ne sais pas pour les autres.
C: Oui mais ça dépend de où et quand. On est des enfants sages mais un peu débiles.
X: On a eu la chance de vivre dans l’opulence complète et de pouvoir faire ce qu’on voulait quand on voulait. Papa était là pour moi, merci Papa.
- Enfant, de quoi aviez-vous peur ?
C : Peur de la mort. Il y a un rêve que je faisais tout le temps quand j’étais gamin : je me faisais décapiter avec une faucille.
F : Moi, j’avais peur d’être tout nu dans la cour de récréation. J’ai déjà rêvé de ça plusieurs fois.
X : D’être grand.
- Votre mère vous disait-elle " je t’aime " ?
La mère de Regal lui disait souvent " Trouve toi un vrai travail " mais maintenant elle lui dit " Je t’aime ".
- Que faisait votre père ?
Le père de Regal c’est un peu les Last Rapes of Mr Teach. Et si les Last Rapes n’avaient pas périclité à un moment donné, peut être que Regal n’aurait jamais vu le jour... Il s’est donné la mort et nous a donné la vie. Et d’ailleurs, Le Pécheur et Animal Trophies n’auraient pas non plus abouti. Et là, ça fait 3 groupes formidables !
Tourner dans des meilleures conditions et au final, marquer un peu le monde de la musique... du rock ‘n roll dude! Mais sans pour autant se dire qu’on va en vivre ou qu’on va gagner de la thune...
Nous on aime bien faire de la musique dans des endroits un peu improbables. Juste s’amuser et que les gens kiffent.
- L’amour pour la première fois. C’était quand et avec qui ?
Avec Melvyn qui joue dans Strange Hands par exemple.
Et aussi JC Satàn qui sont des gens qu’on a rencontré à l’époque des Last Rapes of Mr Teach, qu’on continue à voir et avec qui on passe des supers bons moments. Je pense que la scène bordelaise ça a été le premier amour.
Après, finalement Regal est fidèle, mais on fini par coucher avec beaucoup de gens. On donne notre amour à beaucoup de personnes. Mais toujours protégés !
- Quelle est la plus belle de vos qualités ?
X: Bah, je sais pas, je pense qu’on est honnête.
C: Ouais, on est plus honnête que certains.
X: On fait nos trucs honnêtement.
- Votre plus grand regret ?
X: D’avoir perdu beaucoup de temps.
C: Non, c’est d’avoir laissé le van sans surveillance à Budapest la 2ème fois qu’on y est allé !
X: Non mais non, on s’est fait piqué des trucs, ok, on a fait des choix de merde, ok, mais notre plus grand regret c’est d’avoir perdu énormément de temps. On s’est formé il y a 3 ans et on a perdu trop de temps à jouer aux jeux vidéo.
C: Non je ne suis pas d’accord avec toi.
X: Bon laisse tomber cette question, c’est une réponse un peu indécise.
- Avez-vous déjà volé? Vous souvenez-vous du moment, de ce que c’était ?
X: Une bouteille à Fribourg, des rallonges, des jacks...
F: C’était par inadvertance ! donc ça compte pas...
C: Ouais on vole mais...
X : Nan mais c’est des p’tits trucs. Quand on en a vraiment besoin. Genre on est venus avec deux rallonges, et au bout de 3, 4 concerts il nous en manquait une.... au 5ème concert bon tu vois une rallonge qui traine, tu la prends.
A: Mais notre première qualité c’est quand même l’honnêteté ! (rires)
X: Mais je pense qu’on s’est fait volé beaucoup plus que ce qu’on a pu voler...
C: Nous on vole des trucs gentils et utiles... comme des bébés chats.
F: Et l’image du bébé-chat tu vois, ça adoucit tout.
C: Ouais, tu vois l’interview est déjà beaucoup plus peace...
- Avez-vous déjà tué ?
C : On a tué quelques concerts...
X: On a dû écraser quelques animaux sur la route. Un oiseau ou deux je pense...

F: BHL je pense.
C: Non il est joli avec sa touffe.
X: Non personne, on est peaceful, on est des gros hippies.

Le dernier baiser de Regal ça serait pour les gars de la salle Le Parapluie National à Binche. Il y avait 4 personnes au concert mais pourtant c’était vraiment bien.
- Pourquoi avez-vous pleuré la dernière fois ?
C: Pour nos regrettées chansons qui ont disparues. (ndlr: lors du 1er enregistrement du nouvel album)
On a enregistré notre 3ème album qui a disparu avant qu’il puisse voir le jour. C’est un peu un mort né. Donc on a pleuré un peu pour ça, dans notre coeur...
- De quoi souffrez-vous?
X: D’alcoolisme ! (rires)
C: D’amour !
- Avez-vous déjà frôlé la mort?
La mort de Regal non, jamais. Les bases sont solides. Regal perdurera, il a encore une longue vie devant lui.
- Croyez-vous en Dieu?
La religion du rock and beat ! La religion de l’amour. C’est ce qui nous pousse entre nous, parce qu’on s’aime.

On va pas citer tous nos vrais amis donc on va dire :

- Que souhaitez-vous à vos pires ennemis?
Qu’ils arrêtent de nous piquer des pédales, nos guitares et nos basses ! Arrêtez, ça devient chiant.
- Vous qui dormez quelques heures seulement, ronflez-vous la nuit?
X: Personne ronfle ici ok?
C: On va commencer par les moins pires, qui sont Fadi et Antoine, ils ne ronflent pas vraiment... Après les deux autres bon...
X: Moi s’ils peuvent me mettre dans une pièce à côté, c’est mieux... Je ronfle énormément et Caelan se met à ronfler. Plus il grossit plus il ronfle (rires)....
Version française. Thanks to the Franco-American friendship, the Californian quartet Froth is releasing their new album this month in Europe via Azbin and Frantic City and later in US via Burger.
In 2013, they seduced us with their 1st LP, the psychedelic but not boring „Pattern“ and our first feeling is confirmed with their new LP, „Bleak“ which fits perfectly with the current winter mood.
So yes, Froth is filled with melancholy drowned in an electric, elaborated and sweet psychedelism. And even if we assume that these young americans were raised under the sun and with all the Californian clichés (surf, skate, sea…), the darkness is nevertheless floating around.
Do you know what I’m talking about? This inherent spleen which catches your guts and doesn’t want to leave… Well, this sensation lives through their compositions to be transformed gradually in something fierce and blazing…
The record starts with Afternoon, a song from which we emerge a bit sad and confounded. But this feeling is swept away thereafter.
Postcard Radio, On My Chest, Turn It Off, Sky, Bleak... all these are thrown as a catharsis imposing its true will and urgency. The band enjoys developing its melodies, in some extreme and endearing distortions.
Keyed up, we also take pleasure in their softer and more intimate moments as Nothing Baby but also with the great acoustic final Sleep Alone, which will let us definitely charmed…

x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ?
Rock n roll is pretty much music that sounds somewhat like the Velvet Underground haha.
x A picture ?
William Egglestons pictures always made me want to get out of the town I grew up in. I remember looking at his pictures in high school and thinking about how nothing there compared to anything in any of his pictures. (Joojoo)
x Worst nightmare ?
After being in Europe the biggest fear we have is touring America.
x The place you enjoy the most ?
Probably my bedroom. I love traveling but when I'm home I'm in bed basically all day. (Joojoo)

C’est sous couvert de l’amitié franco-américaine que le quatuor californien (Echo-Park, LA) Froth sort son nouvel album ce mois-ci, chez nous (Europe) via Azbin et Frantic City Records et chez eux (USA) via Burger. Après nous avoir séduit en 2013 avec leur première galette psychédélique mais pas chiante, „Pattern“, ils confirment avec leur nouvel LP intitulé „Bleak“ qui résonne parfaitement avec notre triste météo hivernale. Oui, Froth est emprunt de mélancolie et l’assume à travers un psychédélisme électrique joliment léché. Car si ces jeunes américains ont été élevés au soleil de leur chère Californie et à tous les clichés qui vont avec (surf, skate etc..), ils n’en restent pas moins marqués par une noirceur récurrente. Vous savez, ce spleen intrinsèque qui prend au ventre et ne veut pas nous quitter ? Et bien, celui-ci traverse leurs compositions et se transforme au fur et à mesure en sensation ardente et enflammée. L’album débute par Afternoon dont on ressort un peu triste et déconcerté, mais ce sentiment est vite balayé par la suite...
Postcard Radio, On My Chest, Turn It Off, Sky, Bleak... sont autant de catharsis qui imposent clairement volonté et urgence ; le groupe prend un malin plaisir à élaborer ses mélodies en distorsions extrêmement attachantes. Et tout ça avec un certain talent. Remonté à bloc, on appréciera aussi les quelques moments plus intimes comme Nothing Baby, et surtout le final acoustique Sleep Alone qui nous laissera charmés jusqu’au bout...
Pour parler simple ça sonne rock, psychédélique, surf, ça évoquera surement Brian Jonestown Massacre, plein de groupes de la scène anglaise indie 90’s mélangé à une sauce Burger Records, mais au delà de ces références, ce n’est que du bon.
Le groupe est actuellement en tournée européenne surement près de chez vous, toutes les dates par ici. À voir absolument car, en plus ils jouent avec un Omnichord...

Les photos de William Egglestons me donne toujours envie de partir loin de la ville où j’ai grandi. Je me souviens regarder ses photos quand j’étais au lycée et penser qu’il n’y avait rien d'équivalent ici comparé à n’importe quoi dans l’une de ses photos. (Joojoo)
x Pire cauchemar ?
Après être avoir été en Europe, la plus grand peur qu’on a est de tourner aux USA.
x Un endroit préféré ?
Surement ma chambre. J’aime bien voyager mais quand je suis à la maison, j’aime bien passer ma journée entière au pieu. (Joojoo)

Right in time to embellish your Xmas presents hunt and slip one or two very interesting pieces in your rotten Vans, tired Santiags, pierced and perforated Converses, dirty socks and Blue suede shoes under the tree.
So yes, once again it's unreadable but it's full of sincere love, joy and faith in humanity.
Once again, again, no " top list " because it's too hard, too cold outside and the planet is in danger, but we swear on our mother's heads that you can pick, buy, listen any of those EP's, singles, albums, because they really touched and moved us deep in our groopies' hearts.
So a big "thanks" and many kisses to all the artists, bands, labels, roadies, venues, bars, clubs, record shops, DJ's, writers and well-advised audience.
Have all a nice Christmas/NYE time and let's meet again next year, we'll be less lazy, we swear. Keep faith.

La voilà, notre " große " liste de fin d’année, pile poil pour agrémenter vos cadeaux de Noël et glisser un ou deux présents enfin intéressants dans vos, Vans pourries, Santiags fatiguées, Converses trouées, chaussettes sales et Blue suede shoes, sous le sapin.
Alors oui, c’est toujours illisible mais c’est plein d’amour, de joie et de foi en l’humanité. Encore une fois pas de top car c’est trop dur, il fait trop froid et la planète est en danger, mais nous vous assurons sur la tête de nos mères que vous pouvez piocher, acheter, ou juste écouter n’importe lequel de ces albums, Ep's, singles, car ils nous ont vraiment touché au plus profond de nos petits cœurs de rockeurs en cette année 2014.
