Foggy Girls Club's Merry Best Of 2014 - Die große Liste

And so here it is, our " große " list for the end of the year.
Right in time to embellish your Xmas presents hunt and slip one or two very interesting pieces in your rotten Vans, tired Santiags, pierced and perforated Converses, dirty socks and Blue suede shoes under the tree.
So yes, once again it's unreadable but it's full of sincere love, joy and faith in humanity. Once again, again, no " top list " because it's too hard, too cold outside and the planet is in danger, but we swear on our mother's heads that you can pick, buy, listen any of those EP's, singles, albums, because they really touched and moved us deep in our groopies' hearts.

So a big "thanks" and many kisses to all the artists, bands, labels, roadies, venues, bars, clubs, record shops, DJ's, writers and well-advised audience.

Have all a nice Christmas/NYE time and let's meet again next year, we'll be less lazy, we swear. Keep faith.

The Madcaps – Foggyview (english)

Version francaise ici.

It’s been already a while that we wanted to talk about the Madcaps so as they’re going on the road for a France / Switzerland tour, we thought it was the perfect time to introduce you to them. The Madcaps make me want to compare the city of Rennes as a true cradle of rock of nowadays. After cutting their teeth in several other bands, the four fellows - Thomas, Rémi, Bastien and Vincent - made their way to a 60’s garage rock style which can remind us the Nuggets’comps era. But beware, no boring revival plagiarism here, as these guys know how to mix their different influences from punk to pop (yes, pop!) to deliver us some delicious and refined songs leaving no space to any bum note. Thomas, better known as the Madcaps’Dad, kindly answered to our questions and we’re definitely not mad about the others, who are often busy to make their guitars spit out in their other bands such as Rigg (for Remi), Soul! (for Bastien) and Kaviar Special (for Vincent).

Their brand new tour will start on the 23rd of October with a first concert in Caen (Le Bocal) and you can’t miss them if they play nearby, as they are sharing the scene with their buddies Kaviar Special. This is also the occasion to have a special thought for Vincent who plays in both bands and we pray for him not to die on stage...

"We already released a 7’ on Howlin Banana Records (April 2014) and as we wanted to keep the banana mood and as we had an extra song from this recording session, it will be featured on a Banana Juice Records upcoming comp, which will be out at the end of the year. Then, for you to know, we recorded our first LP last summer which will be released in January (2015) via Howlin Banana and Beast Records. Suffice it to say that it would be the beginning of a big success! Bring the girls and lets own America !"

Tour dates with Kaviar Special :

23/10/14 - Caen (FR) - Bocal
24/10/14 - Paris - Olympic W/ Travel Check
25/10/14 - Genève (SWI) Le Cabinet
26/10/14 - Basel (SWI)- Archiv
28/10/14 - Lugano (SWI) - Li!
29/10/14 - Kreuzlingen (SWI) - Horstklub
30/10/14 - Nîmes (Fr) - Bada Bing
31/10/14 - Toulouse (Fr) - Amanita Muscaria - w/ Volage
01/11/14 - Nantes (Fr) - Le Chien Stupide

x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ?

Seriously, is it a joke? Why not asking „What is love“? Please ask me some precise questions then I could answer correctly. But alright, as I’m a gentleman, I’ll answer anyway. Music and Rock and Roll are basically essential things I couldn’t live without. It’s kind of the cheese, the red wine, the air, the water, the love and the sun. And you, what is your definition of love ?

x A picture ?

This is an exclusive footage of our next video. Yeah, we had so much fun dressed up as pandas and messing around. Especially during the scene with the zebras, giraffes and orang utans...

x Worst nightmare ?

Personally, I never have bad dreams. Life is cool babe, peace out!
Alright, the last time might have been when I was 12, after one of the most dreadful episode of X Files. It was something creepy, taking place in a shithole in USA with some consanguineous people with horrific faces, like the sons were copulating with their armless and legless mom who was living on a trolley behind a bed. So yeah, this kind of nice things...

x The place you enjoy the most ?

The Helsinki Klub in Zurich. For now, it is the best place we ever played at. Perfect venue, perfect host, delicious burgers, unlimited drinks, crazy audience, 60’s dancefloor till 6 in the morning, old school photo booth, night at the hotel... like in a dream.

x 3 albums :

- The Human Expression - Love at Psychedelic Velocity
An obscure californian garage band which existed only between 1966 and 1967. It’s pure psychedelic, dark and tortured rock and roll. One of the best albums of its kind.

- The Frowning Clouds - Whereabouts
This is the 2nd LP of these Australians from Geelong and was released in december 2013. This is not strictly 60’s garage like on their 1st record. They’re still in that mid-tempo kind of stuff but this time but it is more groovy, more pop, with some very catchy melodies and a lot of great psychedelic songs.

- The Kinks - Arthur or the Fall & Decline of The British Empire
We listened to this little wonder the other day while we were on the way to Reims to play at the Back in Time Festival. This is a concept album / soundtrack originally composed for a play which was supposed to air on english TV but finally never did. But anyway, this is clearly one of the best albums in history. The Kinks are on top and they won’t go higher. « You've reached your top and you just can't get any higher » to sing along to « Shangri La », my favorite song of the world (all categories)…

x A quote :

This is a quote from the end of a monologue, from Jean-Pierre Marielle in the movie “Les Galettes de Pont Aven” where he’s praising the ass of Marie and this is brilliant :

x Discography :

- The Madcaps 7’’ EP – Howlin Banana Records (April 2014)

- LP - January 2015 - Howlin Banana Records / Beast Records

The Madcaps – Foggyview

English version here.

Les dates de tournée avec Kaviar Special :

23/10/14 - Caen (FR) - Bocal
24/10/14 - Paris - Olympic W/ Travel Check
25/10/14 - Genève (SWI) Le Cabinet
26/10/14 - Basel (SWI)- Archiv
28/10/14 - Lugano (SWI) - Li!
29/10/14 - Kreuzlingen (SWI) - Horstklub
30/10/14 - Nîmes (Fr) - Bada Bing
31/10/14 - Toulouse (Fr) - Amanita Muscaria - w/ Volage
01/11/14 - Nantes (Fr) - Le Chien Stupide

The Helsinki Klub à Zurich.

x 3 albums :

- The Human Expression - Love at Psychedelic Velocity

- The Frowning Clouds - Whereabouts

- The Kinks - Arthur or the Fall & Decline of The British Empire

Foggy Girls Club's Merry Best Of 2013 - Die große Liste

2013 is coming to an end and, as an outlet, we have the impression that permission is given to speak freely. So, for this wonderful year we would like to thank:
The yelling neighbors, the bookers that forgets to book, the whole french (maybe worldwide) political landscape, One Direction, the conjuncture, the french anti-gay marriage activists, the breaking strings, the ripped drum skins, the brain drain, the dumbs that remain, the japanese government for Fukishima, Kim Jung Un, the NSA, that big guy between you and the stage, the yelling shorties... we might forget some, but well, all those or what's keeping us angry and willing to mess all up, stir up troubles like we know how.

However, and a tiny bit more seriously, we come up with a huge almost unreadable list of what we listened to and loved during the year (with probably some left behind, and we're sorry for that). No "top", no chart, because it's impossible, but a list of a hundred albums, EP's and singles that we strongly recommend you to buy blind or at least listen to.

And since we're here, we would like to give a big kiss on the cheek to all of you artists, bands, labels, record stores, gigs organizers, venues, bars, worldwide krabers and to the informed audience for this great year.

Happy New Year, keep the faith and our devoted thoughts to Mister Lou Reed.

The Foggy Girls Club.

Kaviar Special - Foggyview (english)

pic V Strauss

Version française ici

No hood, but fishing nets for Howlin Banana and Azbin Records, at the end of this year. In talented fishermen they realize a very nice catch, as well as catching our attention, in the coolest manner, the Kaviar Special
Straight from the breeding pool that is Rennes (french city in Brittany), as well as their basin brethren (Catfight, Rigg, Blackjag Davy, Bikini George, Sapin…), we could have assumed their sound to be delicate, as the delicacy they’re named after… That’s not really what’s happening. Still, and « Oh joy ! », it will proudly take place on your table, between the « foie gras » and the oysters, for the french here at least, on the christmas table. Ok, maybe not on the table, but for sure in your ears. They went through enough bullshit all year long, not to reward them with something good.

« Special », that they are. More than just torturing the fuzz and the good vibes like no one else, we feast on their melodies like Dating A Slut, Summer, Shirley, Ptit Cul or Sabadidon ( we could easily feast on all of them actually, because much more than being just « good » they sum up everything we like about the rock scene these days).

Precious, also, for it’s been so long we were waiting for something wild and dirty out of the capital of Brittany. That, my friends, is done. And we are happy. And we are filled, but not enough to pass on devouring this delicious white vinyl coming out on the 10th of December.
Get it and listen to it below:

Adrien, Kaviar bassist of the band kindly answered to some of our questions...

« We started in the beginning of 2012. We four, were living together in a house in Rennes, Brittany, and used to rehearse in the garage (we’re playing garage, the real one). We’re influenced by punk and sixties music but especially the modern era like Burger Record, In The Red Records etc… »

x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ? or describe how do you feel when you're doing music?

When you keep on listening to bands, and going to gigs, it makes you want to create something , to write a song, to put some arrangements here and there.
It just depends on one or two bands and then it click, you’re getting into it, you compose, you play, where you can.
For me, Rock and Roll is the 50’s, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley etc…
Today it doesn’t really mean anything. Like a tattoo of Johnny Hallyday is rock and rollish…

x A picture?

Los Saicos. Four Peruvians who released a megastylish album in 1964. Lost in deepest Peru, nobody really understands from what they could put out this so dirty and wild sound. They only were influenced by british bands from the 60’s but I really think they influenced a lot of people. Demolicion ! is an incredible song where they explain that they want to blow up the noisy train station next to their place that keeps them from rehearsing properly. This is definitely an anthem.

x Worst nightmare ?

When we were touring last summer, driving at like 80 mph on the highway, the back doors of our van suddenly opened… The trunk was full with all our instruments and stuff. So we stopped on the emergency lane, freaked out, and fortunately there was just one guitar missing ! It was 3 in the morning, the highway was desert and we hurried to find grab the guitar back before a car would run over it. Like a miracle, it was intact even not out of tune… In my head, I was already seeing all our amps crushed on the road and a big pile-up… That would have been a fucking nightmare…

x The place you enjoy the most?

« Cocoon », it’s a studio, not really far from Rennes. We’re hanging out there to record, rehearse, jam, sip some cocktails and juggle. Laid back.

x 3 albums:

It’s really hard to only pick 3…

- Bare Wires - Idle Dreams
Matthew Melton is a genius, tyrannical but genius.

- Ramones - Ramones
The pure and authentic energy. This album is incredible. I never heard anything else that would hit me like that. Sniffing some glue and not the slightest guitar solo.

 - Harlem - Hippies
Harlem is the kind of band which makes you confident. They have amazing melodies, you can feel that there is no brain racking, it’s so spontaneous, it’s beautiful. It makes you want to chill with them. I think they split, that´s a shame.

- Dead Ghosts - Can't get no

- Ty Segall, his life, his work…

x A quote:
