La Luz - Interview and dreams

In the beginning, there was Shana Cleveland (guitar), Marian Li Pino (drums), Lena Simon (bass), and Alice Sandahl (keyboard). La Luz was born and we discovered them in 2013 following the first releases : the Damp Face EP then the full-length album It’s Alive. At the time, we’ve been pleasantly seduced by the sweet and classy surf rock music played by the American quartet. (see Mixtape WOL).

Then came the end of the 2015 summer. Their second album, Weirdo Shrine, produced by Ty Segall, unveiled some darker-faced, wild and mystical vibes. The melodies were becoming heady, as well as the vocal harmonies – where the riffs and captivating rhythmics were enchanting. From now on, it was clear that these girls were showing us the way. Let there be light.





Their wonderful last album, Floating Features, popped up in May 2018 . It was not expected, but it was perfectly timed. Just before summer. And it really carried us the last month. We strongly recommend this album, a “must have” to be honest. Every song is beautiful, powerful, magic, warm… What more can we say other than, thanks girls! You are one hell of a rock band.

With a lovely view of Hamburg’s harbour, we met the American girls to have a chat before their concert at Hafenklang. (4/10/2018).





x The first line up of La Luz was included only Shana and Marian, if I’m right. How did everyone find each other?

Shana : Yeah and 2 different girls. Before that, me and Marian played in a band together, The Curious Mystery.
I was kind of tired with it and I had this idea, “Hey I wanna form a band that has like four female vocals” so I asked Marian if she wanted to be in it and play drums and she said yes. We had the two of us then she recommended Alice because they had played together in a band but then Alice kind of blew us off… So we went first with this other keyboard player. Then Alice finally joined so it came through at the end! Then the former bass player wanted to do other stuff after couple of years, so Lena joined.


x Could you please tell us about your first encounter with music?

Shana : My parents were musicians, so just through hearing their band was my first encounter with music. They played together in different bands when I was born. They’re still playing in different bands… like my dad plays in 10 bands or something. He lives in Michigan, that’s where I grew up and my mom lives in Seattle.

Marian: My parents were not in bands or anything so for me it was just through education. Like in school, they introduced you to music, you just pick an instrument and I picked clarinette. I discovered and learned to play music that way, classically and then jazz, then rock and roll…

Lena: Same for me. But my first memory was being on the floor, I guess as a really young child, listening to Peter and the Wolf, like the story and the music. My dad was just playing that. It’s actually really cool, I loved it.

Marian : I also remember when my parents got me my first drum kit for Christmas. At first they put out only the snare drum and I was already elated, just by that one piece, like “oh my god, this is the coolest thing, this is the best christmas present of all time! “. And they had actually combined with the rest of my extended family to get the whole drum kit, I was literally out of my mind!

Alice : I remember my mom playing the piano a lot, and it intrigued me. Then I wrote my first song very young before I even knew how to play… It was about cat (laughs), but it was like very boring. And my dad played guitar, he was really into this folk musician Gordon Lightfoot so I would just sing along with him… so now I really love Gordon Lightfoot.

x About the last album, Floating Features, what does ‘Features’ really mean?

M : Feature is like your nose is a feature, your eyes, it doesn’t have to be on a face, it’s more little details…
S : It’s also something that people use to describe films, like a feature film so it has a lot of meanings.
I think of it as a psychedelic kind of way that dreams and movies can be. They can be close to reality and also just a little bit off. I feel like that’s a sort of a recurring theme from the album.


x Then, where do these Floating Features come from?

S: From your mind!
I have had a lot of dreams where my mouth gets really big for some reason…
But the features on the cover were sort of a happy accident. We had this idea to make sort of a set for the cover of the album and also for the Mean Dream video. We thought maybe it would have plants, just sort of look like a beast in reality but being a little off and strange and with a performance…
And actually my friend Lauren Corden already had made these giant features so it was perfect and tied in the title, even more than the original idea…

M: We also liked the idea that Floating Features could be a band. It could sound like a different band, the Floating Features but it was also the title of the album. It’s kind of letting you write your own narrative, I guess, to how it would be perceived.
S: I thought it could be a really cool band name with the instrumental title track. It’s kind of the way we thought of it: The Floating Features play this title track, like Sgt. Peppers...





x Your music always evokes the natural world to me, like in a mystical way, do you know where that comes from?

S: Do you mean the kind of imagery in the lyrics?
As I wrote half of those lyrics in the country actually, in California, in a small town. I’ve always liked going to parks to write lyrics, I don’t know why. I think that there is something about the white noise of nature and that it’s less intimidating to come up with words in a place where there is sort of noise than in a silent room... Sometimes it’s even nicer to go to the ocean or to the river, some place that is naturally loud and so you can just sing into the air. It’s less claustrophobic… I feel it’s easier for my mind to wander – when it is not so confined…


x Reminds me of Seattle – where you’re from originally, before moving to LA. It’s completely surrounded by nature isn’t it?

S : Yeah, parks, mountains, it’s beautiful nature.
M: Everywhere there is a forest or a lake or a river... You almost can’t escape nature, it’s there all the time…


x Like an "enchanted forest"?

S: Yeah. The first time I went to the Northwest (Pacific Northwest, Seattle etc.), I was moving up there from LA. I stopped at a rest area but it was just so beautiful, I couldn’t even believe it, it looked like “Hobbit land” (the Shire). The trees were covered with moss and that’s totally normal in the Northwest but I’d never seen anything like that before… I was like “Holy shit, this is like a magical Jungle”, it does feel really magical – sort of dark and lush and green…




x Is it important for you to live close to nature?

All: Sure….
M: That’s kind of how the US feels to me, there is always nature or any coast by… Maybe every country is like that…
S: When I lived in Chicago, I felt like there was no escape.
M: I guess NYC feels like that too.
L: But you can go to the beach though…
S: But it’s like a city beach…


x Shana, I read that you were drawing comics, do you still have time for that? And is there a link with your music?

S: Yeah a little bit, not as much as I’d like too… it’s pretty hard... Comics are hard. I wanted to do a comic for The Creature, like our song The Creature. I started one but I never finished…
About the link, it is sort of vague. The magic of media made much more made of it than actually existed. There is this comic, “Black Hole” from Charles Burns, which is based in Seattle and a lot of the action takes place in this park that was right next to where I used to live, and had some really of strange experiences. So yeah, I just think it asserted the feeling of that comic in the previous album Weirdo Shrine..





x What do you like about performing live?

S: It’s just great when you have a great show and when you make a connection. That doesn’t always happen but that happens a lot. Some nights, people are not really engaging – you’re gonna have the worst show…
I don’t know if people realize that necessarily, but they have a lot of power in what kind of performance it’s gonna be. And we give more, the more we get from the audience.
It’s always sort of a gamble. You don’t know what kind of night it’s gonna be. Then sometimes this magic thing happens, when it feels like we are all, everyone in the room is going to the same thing together. There is just a connection. For me that’s what I like the most about it. When there is this magical understanding taking place through the power and the beauty of music…

M: We are playing mostly the same songs every night and every day can feel vastly different. One night can be, they didn’t care or I didn’t care, and it wasn’t a good show or it can be “Wow, that was so much fun”, they were dancing, we were dancing, everyone is smiling…

L: You see them laughing and smiling and singing and it makes all the difference… Ok this is worth it now! Like some adrenaline I’m sure. There was one of our shows in this tour where I felt like that, it was either in Copenhagen or Paris and the audience made me really happy. I felt warm inside.





x Actually I was asking myself, do you sleep well during a tour?

M: Actually yes! I was just talking about that this morning. I tend to sleep very well on tour.

x And do you dream?

M: Sometimes… They say that changing where you are everyday helps you to dream… But I have no control over my dreams.

S: I remember my dream of last night… You want me to tell...? (laughs)
I just dreamed I went out for a hamburger with my grandma…. It never got to the eating but we were going out to eat an hamburger…

x Then you arrived in Hamburg...

S: Yeah that’s true! Have you guys got a lot of good hamburgers here?

x Before you go to dinner, could you give us some playlist tips? What did you listen during the tour for example?

Shana: Dig in the Cutworms album!

Lena : I just put on one of the latest Deerhunter album, from 2013 (Monomaniac). I hadn’t really ever dived into it and there were some cool tracks. It’s the one where it kind of go back and forth between this fuzzy garage and more bedroom electronic sounds. It’s cool.

Marian : I’m listening to classical trompette music, this lady Alison Blossom, she’s the best.

Alice: I have a lot of music in my phone, but I’ve been listening to Erykah Badu’s latest mixtape, I really like it, it’s really good… It’s not even that recent…

That night, the show definitely made us feel warm inside. A lot of passion, nice riffs, nice people, a great harmony where the girls made us dance and sing.

La Luz - Interview de rêves

Au commencement étaient Shana Cleveland (à la guitare), Marian Li Pino (batterie), Lena Simon (basse) et Alice Sandahl (claviers). La Luz était né et nous les découvrions en 2013 suite à la sortie de leurs premières galettes, le Damp Face EP puis l’album It’s Alive. À l’époque, on avait été agréablement charmé par le surf rock classe et attachant des américaines (voir Mixtape ici WOLXV).

Puis vint la fin de l’été 2015. Leur 2ème album, le bien nommé Weirdo Shrine, produit par Ty Segall, révélait un visage plus sombre, mystique et sauvage. Les mélodies y devenaient déjà entêtantes, les harmonies vocales aussi… Telles des enchanteuses aux riffs redoutables et aux rythmes enivrants, il était incontestable qu’elles nous montreraient désormais la “voix”… Et la lumière fût.





C’est en mai 2018 qu’est arrivé Floating Features, leur magnifique dernier album. On ne s’y attendait pas, mais il a débarqué à point nommé. Comme ça. Juste avant l’été. Et il nous a fièrement et fidèlement porté ces derniers mois. On vous le recommande, c’est un “must have” comme on dit. Toutes les chansons sont belles, fortes, magiques, chaleureuses… Que dire de plus à part un grand merci les filles ? Vous êtes un sacré bon groupe de rock.

C’est avec la belle vue sur le port de Hambourg, à l’Hafenklang, que l’on a pu rencontrer et échanger quelque peu avec les américaines avant leur concert (4/10/2018).





x La première formation de La Luz, c’était seulement vous deux, Shana et Marian, si je ne m’abuse. Comment vous êtes-vous trouvées?

Shana : Oui c’est ça. À l’époque (ndlr: ca 2011), on jouait ensemble dans ce groupe : The Curious Mystery.
J’en avais un peu marre et j’avais en tête de monter un projet avec 4 chants féminins, donc j’ai proposé à Marian d’y jouer de la batterie. Elle m’a recommandée Alice (avec qui elle avait joué, dans un autre groupe), mais elle nous a d’abord mis un vent. On a donc commencé avec une autre fille... Et puis quelque temps plus tard, Alice nous a finalement rejoint ! Au départ, on avait aussi une autre bassiste mais qui a quitté le groupe pour d’autres projets. C’est à ce moment là que Lena est arrivée.


x Pouvez-vous évoquer votre première fois avec la musique?

Shana : Mes parents sont musiciens, donc ma première rencontre avec la musique s’est faite via leur groupe. Ils jouaient ensemble quand je suis née. Ils jouent toujours d’ailleurs mais dans différentes formations. Mon père doit avoir une dizaine de groupes. Il vit dans le Michigan, là où j’ai grandi. Ma mère, elle, vit à Seattle.

Marian: Me concernant, ça s’est fait à l’école. On avait des cours d’introduction à la musique où tu pouvais choisir ton instrument et j’avais pris la clarinette. J’ai découvert et appris à jouer comme ça, d’abord par le classique, puis le jazz, puis le rock and roll...

Lena: Pareil pour moi. Mais mon premier souvenir, je pense que c’était quand j’étais toute jeune, à écouter Pierre et le Loup, l’histoire et la musique. Mon père le mettait souvent. C’est vraiment cool en fait, j’adorais écouter ça...

Marian : Je me souviens aussi quand mes parents m’ont acheté ma première batterie. C’était pour Noël et il n’y avait que la caisse claire au départ, mais ça m’avait rendu dingue. Le cadeau de Noël le plus cool au monde ! Et puis ils s’étaient cotisés avec le reste de la famille pour m’offrir le kit de batterie complet. J’étais complètement aux anges !

Alice : Je me souviens de ma mère qui jouait beaucoup de piano et ça m’intriguait beaucoup. J’ai dû écrire ma première chanson à cette période. J’étais toute petite, bien avant de savoir vraiment jouer… Une chanson sur les chats je crois... C’était pas terrible! Et aussi, mon père jouait de la guitare. Il était à fond dans ce musicien folk, Gordon Lightfoot : je me souviens avoir souvent chanté ça avec lui. J’aime toujours beaucoup Gordon Lightfoot.

x À propos du dernier album, Floating Features, que signifie vraiment “Features”?

M : Features, ça peut désigner les traits du visage par exemple, le nez, les yeux et leur détails…
S : C’est aussi un mot que les gens utilisent pour décrire un type de film, un long métrage. Ça peut avoir plein de sens différents en fait.
Je le vois aussi comme cette facette psychédélique que peuvent renvoyer les rêves ou certains films. Quand ils sont à la fois proches mais aussi un peu hors de la réalité. Pour moi, c’est quelque chose que l’on retrouve tout au long de l’album.


x Et alors d’où viennent-elles, ces Floating Features? (figures flottantes)

S: De ton esprit !
J’ai fait pas mal de rêves dans lesquels ma bouche devenait énorme, je ne sais pour quelles raisons…
Mais par rapport à la pochette et au nom de l’album, c’est plus un heureux hasard. En effet, on avait eu l’idée de cette espèce de plateau / scène pour le visuel de la pochette et pour le clip de Mean Dream. Avec, par exemple, des plantes bizarres, dans un décor un peu étrange... et au milieu le spectacle.
Et puis en fait, mon amie Lauren Corden avait fabriqué ces costumes en forme de traits de visage “features” géants. On s’est dit que ça correspondait parfaitement au thème et au nom de l’album, et même plus qu’à l’idée de départ !

M: On aime aussi beaucoup l’idée que Floating Features pourrait être le nom du groupe, que ça puisse porter à confusion.
S: Oui, j’ai toujours trouvé que ça pouvait être un super nom de groupe. Ça pourrait être un autre groupe, éponyme à la première chanson de l’album qui, en plus, est instrumentale. Ça donnerait :”The Floating Features jouent Floating Features”... à la Sgt. Pepper…





x Votre musique m’évoque toujours la nature, avec un côté mystique, ça vient d’où?

S: Tu penses aussi à ce que renvoie l’imagerie des textes, non?
Car j’ai écrit la plupart des textes à la campagne, en Californie. J’aime bien aller me poser dans un parc ou dans la nature pour écrire mes textes, je ne sais pas trop pourquoi. Il y a sûrement quelque chose de stimulant avec cette espèce de bruit de fond que tu retrouves en pleine nature. C’est moins intimidant de trouver l’inspiration et les mots dans ce genre d’environnement, plutôt que dans une pièce complètement silencieuse. J’adore me retrouver près de l’océan ou d’une rivière, ce genre d’endroit naturellement bruyant où tu peux chanter, dans le vent. C’est beaucoup moins claustrophobique. C’est plus facile pour moi de divaguer, de laisser mon esprit se balader quand il n’est pas confiné…


x Je pense à Seattle d’où vous veniez avant de déménager à LA. C’est complètement entouré par la nature, non?

S : Oui tout à fait, il y a plein de parcs, de montagnes et la nature y est magnifique…
M: Il y a des forêts, des lacs et des rivières partout! C’est comme si tu ne pouvais pas t’échapper de cette nature, elle est omniprésente.


x Il y a des forêts enchantées?

S: Oui! La première fois que je suis allé dans le Northwest (Pacific Northwest, Seattle etc.), je déménageais de L.A., et on s’était arrêtés sur une aire de repos. Autour, c’était tellement beau, je n’en croyais pas mes yeux. On aurait dit le Comté des Hobbits. Tous ces arbres couverts de mousse... ce qui est tout à fait normal dans le Northwest! Mais je n’avais jamais vu ça avant! Je me disais “Wow, mais c’est quoi ça, une jungle magique?!” Ça a tellement ce côté féérique, un peu sombre, plein de végétation et de vert….




x C’est important pour vous de vivre près de la nature?

Toutes: Oui clairement!
M: C’est un peu ma vision de ce que tu peux retrouver aux US : la nature n’est jamais loin. Enfin peut être que c’est pareil dans tous les pays…
S: Mais quand je vivais à Chicago, je me sentais vraiment coincée : comme si il n’y avait aucun moyen de s’échapper…
M: Je pense que c’est un peu pareil quand tu vis à NYC, non?
L: Mais tu peux aller à la plage…
S: Oui enfin une plage “urbaine”...


x Shana, j’ai lu que tu dessinais des BD. Tu as toujours le temps pour ça? Et y-a-t-il un lien avec ta musique?

S: Oui un peu... Pas autant que je le voudrais car la BD, c’est un exercice difficile… Donc on verra quand j’aurai un peu plus de temps. Je voulais faire une BD sur The Creature, comme la chanson. Je l’ai commencée mais jamais finie...
Par rapport au lien avec la musique, c’est plutôt vague et ça a un peu été exagéré dans les médias par rapport au précédent album Weirdo Shrine. Mais il y avait cette BD, Black Hole de Charles Burns, qui m’avait plus ou moins inspirée. L’histoire se déroule à Seattle et notamment dans un parc qui se situait à côté d’où je vivais, et il s’y passe des choses bizarres…





x Qu’est-ce que vous aimez dans le fait de jouer sur scène ?

S: C’est juste génial quand le show se passe bien et que tu arrives à créer un vrai lien. Ça n’arrive pas tout le temps mais assez souvent. Dans le cas contraire, c’est naze pour tout le monde….
Je ne sais pas s’il en a conscience, mais le public a beaucoup d’influence sur ce que sera le concert. Et nous, plus les gens nous donnent, plus on donne.
En fait c’est une sorte de pari. Tu ne peux rien prévoir à l’avance. Comment va se passer la soirée? Et puis tu vas avoir ce truc, quand tout le monde est sur la même longueur d’onde et va dans la même direction, qu’il y a la connexion. C’est ce que j’aime le plus dans le fait de jouer. Quand la magie opère à travers la puissance et la beauté de la musique.

M: On joue souvent plus ou moins le même set, mais chaque ça peut être à chaque fois infiniment différent. Un soir, tout le monde va s’en foutre et le show va être naze ; alors que l’autre va être ultra fun : le public danse, nous dansons, tout le monde sourit…

L: Quand tu vois tout le monde rire et chanter, là tu peux te dire que ça vaut le coup. Tu as la montée d'adrénaline… J’ai ressenti ça sur certains concerts de la tournée - je ne sais plus si c’était à Copenhague ou à Paris - où le public m’a vraiment fait me sentir bien, ça m’a remplie de chaleur.





x Je me demandais d’ailleurs, est-ce qu’on dort bien pendant une tournée?

M: Eh bien en fait, oui! Je parlais justement de ça ce matin et j’ai tendance à très bien dormir en tournée.

x Et vous rêvez?

M: Parfois oui… Il se dit que le fait de changer d’endroits tous les jours t’aide à plus rêver… Mais je ne contrôle pas mes rêves...

S: Je me rappelle de mon rêve de la nuit dernière ! Vous voulez que je vous raconte ? (rires)
J’ai juste rêvé que je sortais pour aller manger un hamburger avec ma grand-mère. On n’est jamais arrivées au moment de manger, mais on y allait...

x Et tu es arrivée à Hambourg...

S: Oui c’est vrai! D’ailleurs vous avez des bons hamburger à Hambourg?

x Bon, avant que vous n’alliez dîner, auriez-vous quelques conseils musicaux à nous donner? Ce que vous écoutez pendant la tournée, par exemple?

Shana: Tu peux digger l’album de Cutworms!

Lena : J’ai pas mal écouté l’un des derniers albums de Deerhunter, celui sorti en 2013 (ndlr: Monomaniac). Je ne m’étais jamais vraiment plongée dedans et il y vraiment de bons morceaux. C’est celui qui va et vient entre des chansons fuzzy garage et d’autres plus dans le genre bedroom electronic… vraiment cool.

Marian : J’écoute beaucoup de trompette classique. Cette fille Alison Blossom, c’est la meilleure!

Alice: J’ai plein de choses dans mon téléphone mais j’écoute la mixtape d’Erykah Badu en ce moment, une des dernières, mais ce n’est pas très récent, j’aime vraiment beaucoup…

Le concert de ce soir là nous a en tout cas réchauffé le coeur. On aurait même voulu que le son soit encore plus fort. De la passion, des beaux riffs, des belles personnes, une belle communion où elles nous ont fait danser et chanter...

x Audacity _ Couldn't Hold A Candle

We thought that they only were punk and dirty, not at all. These Californians (Fullerton,CA) just released a really great power pop album called Butter Knife (via Suicide Squeeze Records).
In 2008 they did the rant garage Power Drownings, and they now return timely as a polished diamond, as you can hear with the great Couldn't Hold A Candle.



x Gap Dream _ Chill Spot

Prostrate yourself people, his Highness Gap Dream, the Chill Prophet just released his new album Shine Your Light on the best label of the moment, Burger Records. Best record of the year ? Definitely. Gabriel Fulvimar is a stubborn genius who synthesizes psychedelism and pop music. Chill Spot is a hit. We dance, we get high, this is unbelievably good.




x Still Charon _ Come Back Dinosaur

Emanating from the promising french DIY scene gravitating within the Collectif Nøthing, Still Sharon is formed by a girl and a boy coming from the heart of France, Limoges. The uncommon beauty of their 1st EP, HΩME, is perfectly illustrated by the song Come Back Dinosaur. Its lo-fi universe is lightly carried by a very touching voice…




x Volage _ Heart Healing (Take 1)

Volage are familiar around and you can check again the late interview we did some time ago after being smashed in the face by their 1st K7 EP, Maddie. This one is just getting reissued with a nice white vinyl 10’’ by the parisian label, Howlin Banana Records (get your copy here before it’s too late!). The beatles-ish song Heart Taking (take 1) is a sort of bridge which links their debut material and their first LP (release in 2014). We were lucky enough to listen to some of these new tracks and they’re devilishly amazing. Now, the wait seems too long but fortunately their explosive live performance will keep us patient. We bet on it, 2014 will be Volage’s year.


x Kaviar Special _ Dead

Coming straight out from the depth of Rennes (France), Kaviar Special took the time to sharpen their scummy garage in the most beautiful caves of Brittany to prepare a 1st S/T LP which is, without any doubt, one of the « Grand Cru » of the end of the year. Our « cœurs de rockers » have been waiting for a long time to be pleased by such a deflagration of sonic and poisonous bombs. This album will be out the 3 of December thanks to the (once again) great french labels Howlin Banana and Azbin Records.

Sapphire Mansions come from Brooklyn and describe themselves as C8666. And we must say it fits pretty well. Their beautiful EP Over America is out this month and is available here. The song Relic makes us remember our first time with Felt and the Velvet Underground…



x future _ Colors

We left future in the end of 2012 and a lot of happened since then. They’re now part of Collectif Nøthing, released a great EP called Abyss and messed up many venues and gig basements. Colors is a sonic shock that stayed stuck in our heads since the first hearing. Try to imagine Moroder ditching Daft Punk to devote his genius to Jesus & Mary Chain… They plan to release new songs in december and will play around Paris of course…



x unhappybirthday _ Kraken

German fellows unhappybirthday were previously located in Berlin and recently moved to Hamburg and they gradually became indispensable on our turntable. Their synthetic music evokes brilliantly, through some of our german references, a piece of Rheingold for the perfect pop ability, a hint of D.A.F for the hypnotic and dark side and also a certain idea of english 80’s and 90’s music. The song Kraken comes from their cassette EP released in 2013 by Night People and a LP is also available via LebensStrasse Records.




x Jonathan Rado _ Dance Away Your Ego

Jonathan Rado is also known to be half of Foxygen and he recently released his first solo album, the very endearing Law and Order (Woodsist Records). The young american is brightly and smartly paying tribute to his lovely references, in a simple, fresh and affecting way. It should be also noted that White Fence is taking part in the great song Faces.




x ANNA _ I love noise

The young Martin is hiding being ANNA, a project connected to fabulous Volage. In France’s countryside, he’s recording his songs in his room following his moony moods. We can surely tell that this raw talent makes us being immersed in a lovely universe. Check here for the first shots.
 



x Cheap Time _ Kill The Light

Cheap Time are guiding us on the rock and roll path since some years now and it’s always a great pleasure to have them alongside, records after records… The new one is called Exit Smiles and is of course great (out on 26/11 thanks to In The Red Records). Jeffrey Novak and his mad gang are still true war machine in live and cult on the turntable. It should be noticed that he’s also releasing his new solo LP Lemon Kid at the same time via Trouble In Mind Records. Cheap Time are also currently touring Europe, and will be in Paris the 27th of November at l’Espace B, go there or die…

x Jack Name _ Pure Terror

We don’t know much about Jack Name, except he’s been working with Ariel Pink, he’s one of White Fence’s touring guitarists and also get called John Webster Johns. His first LP « Light Show » will be out next January (2014) via God ?, which is a Drag City division handled by Ty Segall. Well, we’re looking forward to here more as the first song Pure Terror is gorgeous….



x The Prefab Messiahs _ Bourgeois Sally

Burger Records recently reissued sort of a Prefab Messiah’s anthology called Devolver. These guys were playing their post punk gems in the beginning of the 80’s around Massachussetts and it’s a great pleasure and surprise to discover today this hidden treasure. If you’re into TV Personalities or Swell Maps tone, you will fall in love with that, so get it here. Oh, and also, The Prefab Messiah are preparing a new album after almost 30 years of silence…


x Ekkofabrikken _ Follow the flower

Danish lads Ekkofabrikken are located in Copenhagen and we already ran across some of them for also playing in the beloved and magnificent Halasan Bazar. The sweet and dreamy song Follow The Flowers spreads and shares a tender and naïve beauty. To be followed.


x La Luz _ Big Big Blood

By combining surf band and girl band nowadays, the Californian from La Luz just found the perfect formula that would be much appreciated around here for a test. These days on tour, the girls might have seen another kind of light, when they got involved in a car crash, losing all their instruments. A support page has been created, if you want to help… They released the beautiful album It's Alive last october (Hardly Art).




x Crimes (MN) _ Thrifty Vultures

Crimes are from Minneapolis and take us for a ride through their saturnine pop where vocals layers and heady melodies get tangled. Their first album Thin Sunlight  is a nice surprise and you can listen to it and get it here.



x Midnight Ghost _ Lava Mountain

A guy called Thomas Ellington is behind Midnight Ghost project and its delightful lo-fi pop. The record you can listen to on bandcamp is brilliant and we’re looking forward to the following material.

x Sick Hyenas _ Surf'n blood

Les jeunes hyènes sortent tout droit de Hambourg et on vous prévient, elle mordent ! On en parle plus précisemment par ici.
Une première cassette furieuse intitulée the White Mofo Drug Smuggla (La Pochette Surprise Records) et un LP prêt à sortir, messieurs les labels, manifestez-vous, ça en vaut la peine... 



x Audacity _ Couldn't Hold A Candle

On les pensait uniquement punk et sales, pas du tout. Les Californiens Audacity (de Fullerton, plus précisément) viennent de sortir un très très bon album de power pop Butter Knife (via Suicide Squeeze Records).
On était resté sur leur brulôt garage Power Drownings sorti en 2008 et ils reviennent à point nommé. Le diamant est dorénavant poli, comme l’illustre parfaitement cet extrait Couldn't Hold A Candle.



x Gap Dream _ Chill Spot

Prosternez-vous, son altesse Gap Dream, Roi des Chillers sort son second album Shine Your Light chez le meilleur label actuel Burger Records. Album de l’année ? Certainement. Gabriel Fulvimar n’en fait qu’à sa tête en synthétisant psychédélisme et pop… C’est un génie et Chill Spot est un tube. On plane, on danse, c’est fatalement bon.




x Still Charon _ Come Back Dinosaur

Issus de la prometteuse scène française DIY gravitant au sein du Collectif Nøthing, les Still Charon viennent de Limoges, au cœur de la France et leur 1er EP HΩME est d’une beauté rare. Come Back Dinosaur illumine parfaitement cet univers lo-fi porté par une voix des plus touchantes…




x Volage _ Heart Healing (Take 1)

On a déjà parlé il y a longtemps des Volage, après avoir été frappé par leur 1er EP Maddie. Celui-ci vient juste de bénéficier d’une belle réédition vinyle grâce au label parisien Howlin Banana Records (à se procurer par ici et avant qu’il ne soit trop tard).
La chanson très beatlesienne Heart Taking (take 1) fait le lien entre leurs débuts et un 1er LP qui sortira l’année prochaine. On a eu la chance de pouvoir en écouter quelques extraits, et ils s’avèrent tellement bons que l’attente parait beaucoup trop longue. Pour patienter, leurs live enragés feront bien l’affaire…
On l’annonce, 2014 sera leur année.


x Kaviar Special _ Dead

Sortis tout droit des tréfonds rennais, les Kaviar Special ont eu le temps d’affiner leur garage humide et crasseux dans les plus belles caves bretonnes et de préparer un 1er LP éponyme qui s’annonce clairement comme l’un des grands cru de cette fin d’année. Nos cœurs de rockers attendaient depuis longtemps d’être réjouis à ce point par une déflagration de bombes soniques et vénéneuses. On remercie franchement les Kaviar et on attend début décembre pour se procurer physiquement cet album qui sort chez les excellents label français Howlin Banana Records et Azbin Records.

On avait quitté future fin 2012 et depuis, de l’eau a coulé sous les ponts. Ils font partie du Collectif Nøthing, ont sorti un excellent Abyss EP et retourné pas mal de salles (et caves) de concerts. Le choc sonique Colors n’est d’ailleurs jamais sorti de notre tête. On dirait Moroder qui fait du Jesus & Mary Chain…
Concernant leur actu, ils prévoient de sortir de nouveaux morceaux en décembre et sont en concert à Paris bien sûr…



x unhappybirthday _ Kraken

Précédemment basés à Berlin et nouvellement emménagés à Hamburg, les allemands unhappybirthday sont peu à peu devenus incontournable sur notre platine. Leur musique synthétique réussit à évoquer parfaitement, références allemandes obligent, un côté Rheingold pour leur pop parfaite, un soupçon de DAF pour le côté sombre et hypnotique mais aussi une certaine idée de la scène anglaise des années 80, 90… Kraken est extrait de leur EP Cassette sorti en 2013 chez Night People et un LP est également disponible via le label LebensStrasse Records.




x Jonathan Rado _ Dance Away Your Ego

Jonathan Rado est la moitié de Foxygen et a récemment sorti sont premier album, le très attachant  Law and Order (Woodsist). Le jeune américain y brille élégamment et rend hommage à ses belles références, tout en restant simple, frais et touchant. A noter que White Fence apparait sur l’excellent titre Faces.




x ANNA _ I love noise

Derrière ANNA, se cache le jeune Martin, proche des fabuleux Volage. DIY, dans sa chambre, au centre de la France, il enregistre selon ses humeurs, qui, portées par un talent brut et scotchant nous plongent dans un bel univers… Premier shots par ici…
 



x Cheap Time _ Kill The Light

Les Cheap Time nous accompagnent depuis quelques années et prouvent encore une fois sur leur nouvel album Exit Smiles (26/11 via In The Red Records) qu’ils sont toujours là. Véritable machine de guerre en live et objet cultes sur platines, les affres de Jeffrey Novak et ses comparses portent haut et fort la flamme rock and roll pour notre plus grand plaisir. À noter que Jeffrey Novak sort à la même date son nouvel album solo Lemon Kid via Trouble In Mind. Les Cheap Time finissent actuellement leur tournée européenne et passeront par Paris le 27 novembre à l'Espace B avec Crusaders Of Love et Protokids, miam miam.



x Jack Name _ Pure Terror

On ne sait que peu de choses sur Jack Name, si ce n’est qu’il est l’un des guitaristes live de White Fence et se fait aussi appelé John Webster Johns. Il sort son 1er album Light Show en janvier prochain, via God ?, division de Drag City chapeautée par Ty Segall.
Et bien ça promet de belles choses, en tout cas si l’on se fie au 1er extrait, intitulé Pure Terror…

x Ekkofabrikken _ Follow the flower

Les danois Ekkofabrikken officient du côté de Copenhague et nous sont quelque peu familiers car ils sont échappés des magnifiques Halasan Bazar. La belle et rêveuse Follow The Flower projette une beauté tendre et naïve. À suivre de très près.


x La Luz _ Big Big Blood

La Luz a sorti le très bel album It's Alive (Hardly Art) en octobre dernier. Alliant le surf band au girl band, les californiennes ont trouvé une délicieuse recette qu’on aimerait bien voir par chez nous. Actuellement en tournée, les filles ont vu leur vie défiler lors d’un accident de la route qui leur a détruit tout leur matériel. Une page de soutien a été créée si vous voulez leur filer un coup de main…




x Crimes (MN) _ Thrifty Vultures
