By making a pun with Australia’s nickname for this interview title, I realized that it’s actually my land of Oz. A land far away, where I’ve never been, a bit mysterious, but definitely deep-rooted in my musical universe.
We almost forgot about this, but the first Foggy interview, 8 years ago, already brought us in Melbourne, to the late Crayon Fields. Since then, many Aussies went through our ears, and we’d dream about talking about all the good bands from there, but it would be way too long...





The sensitive and magical journey, will this time, tell about The Living Eyes. We met them musically some years ago now, as these kids have already accomplished a lot.
Moving around the bountiful Melbourne scene, precisely in Geelong, they can be considered as worthy successor of cult bands such as Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Ooga Boogas and co… in some different projects or labels, but all linked with the same passion. Just take some time to dig in their corner stone, the label Anti Fade Records, from which you can discover some of the best australian rock and roll (New Centre of the Universe Vol 1 and 2 compilations for example) .

The Living Eyes just released their third LP, Modern Living (thanks to Anti Fade, Neck Chop, and buddies from Gone With The Weed for Europe).
It starts with “Better Think Again”, and actually you’d better think twice before pushing play, or you’ll be suddenly grabbed and hurled in a huge electric whirlwind of adrenaline combined with enraged anthem and riff. We could easily list every song, as there is nothing to waste: Hits such as Spring, I Don't Think for Myself, getting into the rush of Horseplay to some more introspective vibes on Fear of Heights… you can't help, you just listen very loud and with risen fist. This is an epic feast rolling on magnetic fuzz brilliantly carried out at full speed by young Guitar HerOz outlaws.




We can already predict that Modern Living will become as cult as we consider its predecessor, the red “Living Large” released in 2015 and the yellow one released in 2013. For those who missed out, just go and listen to all of these classics : Down And Out, Up And At Them, Ways To Make A Living, Cry In Shame, High Standards, Eat It Up, Lighten Up etc…
These guys represent the pure rock and roll, thanks for that because it makes you feel extremely good.

As you may have noticed, we have been waiting to see them for some time, but they had to cross the earth to visit the old continent. We had the chance to meet them during their Euro Tour (crazy gigs in Rennes and Paris) and to talk a bit with Billy Gardner, the singer / guitarist (who’s also playing with Ausmuteants ).


Billy: I’m 25 years old, Nick is 22, Mitch 24 and Zane is 19. We used to have a different singer who’s on the first 7’’ but he left in 2012, and then now I’m the singer. Also one year ago our bass player left and my brother Zane joined.


x The name Living Eyes, is it referring to the Bee Gees song or to the Radio Birdman album?

Neither, it’s 13th Floor Elevators reference. They used to play in a club in Texas called The Living Eyes. We were garage kids!


x Can you tell some words about Geelong ?

It’s an area close to Melbourne like near the beach and I don’t know, it’s a fun place to live.

x And Anti Fade Records?

Anti Fade is basically, mostly, just me releasing my friends so that’s why all the bands are from Geelong. A lot of good bands in Geelong!


x It’s funny because when you listen to the first releases from the bands on Anti Fade, like you, but also Hierophant, Ausmuteants, Bonniwells etc. you really feel this 60’s garage vibe, that shades off gradually to some more specific and different sounds in each project evolution…

That’s what we were going for. Like I said we were garage kids and as we get older we listened to more rock and roll I guess instead. Our music taste has broadened, we are more open minded now.
We went to school with The Frowning Clouds, they’re like 2 years older than us, and shared a lot of music like garage especially. Frowning Clouds got us into it and there was a bit of a garage scene in Geelong in like 2010-12 or something or even earlier.




x What other kind of music do you listen to ?

Lately I was listening to a lot of Roxy Music, but also Metallica. The first 2 albums, I love. They’re great! And even to a lot of hardcore lately. In the van it’s been nice to listen to a lot of Neil Young. Mostly rock and roll.


x Could you tell a bit about the “previous generation” that we are also fond of: the Aarght Records stuff, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, like Mikey Young who mixed your album, Ooga Boogas etc...?

Yes Mikey, Mix Master Mike! He has his name on pretty much 80% of Australian releases and he just knows what he’s doing. He has a great ear for that.
He lives like across the bay, from Geelong. So you can catch the ferry to his house or you can drive around but it takes longer.
But yeah we took the ferry over his house in the end of last year and mixed the album with him and it was good. He’s a lovely guy and all the music he makes it amazing.



Like I think Total Control is the best band at the moment or these days. Best band in Australia of the 21th century!
Ooga Boogas are amazing, Stacky the singer is the funniest guy ever and he’s got some funny lyrics too.



x The Living Eyes released 3 album for now : could you describe each?

- The 1st one, the yellow one, is very garage.




- The red one is a bit more like Straight Arrows or something maybe.



- The new one is a bit more rock.




x What about the cover ? Some people on the phone…

Yes that was done by our friend Paris. It was her idea, we gave her the title “Modern Living”, she did a couple things and we said we like that one.
And yes everyone is turned on their phone nowadays, myself included…
She also playing in Hierophants and she has a new band called Parsnip who are going to take over the world! They’re the best, it is 4 girls and it’s very good. If you haven’t heard it, I recommend you to listen to it!





x Modern Living is produced by Stu Mackenzie from King Gizzard, they’re getting big right now!

We’ve known them for years, they are from half an hour from Geelong.
They are a hard working band. They kind of made guitar music cool again. A few years ago I swear like no one who’d go to shows of stuff like that. But I feel since King Gizzard have started, lots of young kids are getting into the guitar music and not just top 40 crap.
King Gizzard are doing crazy things…





x Living Eyes is definitely a guitar band, what do you think when you play?

I don’t know, I wanna rock!


x So you make music for what? is it like a personal pleasure? or shared?

For fun. It’s definitely a personal pleasure. When I don’t make music for a while, I start to feel a bit odd. And then when I make songs, it feels good. It feels healthy.


x Are you working besides music?

Yes of course. I’m working in a Tshirt shop with my friend Jakes from Ausmuteants. That’s good working with buddies, it makes a big difference. You gotta have the buddies!

The Living Eyes - Magiciens d’Oz, l'interview (fr)

En voulant faire un jeu de mot un peu facile avec son surnom "Oz", je me suis rendu compte que l’Australie était un peu mon pays d’Oz. Une contrée lointaine, jamais visitée, un peu appréhendée, mais clairement ancrée dans mon paysage musical.
On l’avait presque oublié mais la première interview Foggy il y a huit ans déjà, nous avait déjà (virtuellement) menée à Melbourne chez les feu Crayon Fields (Chapter Music). Bien d'autres Aussies sont passés depuis dans nos oreilles, et on rêverait d’évoquer tous les bons groupes de là-bas mais ce serait trop long…





L’aventure sensitive et bien sûr magique, se raconte cette fois-ci avec les Living Eyes, rencontrés musicalement il y a quelques années, car les kids ont déjà pas mal de faits d'armes à leur actif.
Gravitant au centre de cette scène foisonnante autour de Melbourne, à Geelong exactement, dignes héritiers des cultes Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Ooga Boogas et consort, on retrouve leurs membres un peu partout, dans plein de groupes différents, labels ou projets liés par la même passion. Allez donc creuser leur pierre angulaire, le label Anti Fade, qui sort la plupart de ce qui se fait de mieux en rock australien…(les compilations New Centre of the Universe Vol 1 et 2 par exemple) .

Eux viennent de sortir leur 3ème album, Modern Living (sorti chez Anti Fade, Neck Chop, et les copains de Gone With The Weed pour l’Europe).
Cette nouvelle galette débute par un “Better Think Again” gueulé à tout va et qui porte bien son nom.
Car effectivement, vous devrez bien y réfléchir à 2 fois pour éviter de vous faire happer et catapulter dans tous les sens par leurs décharges électriques et hymnes implacables.
On pourrait franchement citer toutes les chansons tant il n’y a rien à jeter.
Des tubesques Spring et I Don't Think for Myself en passant par l’énervée Horseplay et des choses plus introspectives comme Fear of Heights… tout ça s’écoute à balle et le poing levé. C’est une fête épique à coup de fuzz magnétiques qui prend à bras le corps et c’est mené de main de maîtres et pieds au plancher par ces jeunes Guitar HerOz sans foi ni loi.




On prédit déjà à Modern Living un statut aussi culte dans nos cœurs que ses prédécesseurs, le rouge Living Large sorti en 2015 et le jaune éponyme sorti en 2013. Pour ceux qui n’y sont pas encore, allez écouter tous les hits que sont Down And Out, Up And At Them, Ways To Make A Living, Cry In Shame, High Standards, Eat It Up, Lighten Up etc…
Ces mecs là représentent le rock, le pur, on les en remercie, ça fait drôlement du bien.

Vous l’aurez compris, on les attendait depuis longtemps, le temps qu’ils viennent de l’autre bout du monde enfin nous voir sur le vieux continent. On a pu échanger avec Billy Gardner, le chanteur / guitariste (qui joue aussi avec Ausmuteants d’ailleurs) lors de leurs concerts (complètement cinglé) à Rennes puis à Paris.

Comme on le disait plus haut, musicalement, on les suit depuis quelques années et pourtant, qu’ils sont jeunes… et ils répondent aussi efficacement que leurs riffs sont incisifs…


Billy: J’ai 25 ans, Nick 22, Mitch 24 et Zane 19. On avait un autre chanteur (qui était sur le premier 7’’) mais il a quitté le groupe en 2012, et donc depuis c’est moi le chanteur. Et il y a un an, notre bassiste est parti et mon frère Zane nous a rejoint.


x Le nom Living Eyes, est-ce en référence à la chanson des Bee Gees ou à l’album de Radio Birdman?

Aucun des deux, c’est une référence aux 13th Floor Elevators. Ils avaient l’habitude de jouer dans un club du Texas qui s’appelait The Living Eyes. Nous on est des garage kids à l’origine !


x Tu peux nous dire quelques mots sur Geelong ?

Ce n’est pas loin de Melbourne, sur la baie de Corio, près de la plage. Je sais pas trop comment décrire mais c’est un chouette endroit à vivre.

x Et Anti Fade Records ?

Antifade en gros c’est moi qui sort les disques des potes. C’est pour ça que tous les groupes du label sont de Geelong! Il y a beaucoup de super groupes à Geelong...


x C’est marrant car quand on écoute les premières sorties des différents groupes sur Anti Fade, comme vous mais aussi Hierophants, Ausmuteants, Bonniwells… il y a vraiment ce côté garage 60’s qui ressort mais qui s’estompe pour des sons propres à chacun des projets au fil des sorties...

C’est vrai qu’au départ on voulait tous sonner un peu comme ça. Comme je le disais, on était des garage kids à l’époque et en vieillissant, on a écouté d’autres styles de rock and roll. Nos goûts musicaux ont évolué et on est plus ouvert d’esprit maintenant.
En fait, on était à l’école avec les Frowning Clouds qui sont plus vieux de 2 ans. On a en quelque sorte fait notre éducation musicale ensemble, notamment au niveau garage. Grâce à eux, qui était à fond dans ce style et il y avait aussi une forte scène garage à Geelong vers 2010, 2012 et même avant…




x Et donc tu écoutes quoi comme autre musique?

Dernièrement, beaucoup de Roxy Music, et aussi Metallica. Les 2 premiers albums... ils sont géniaux. Aussi du hardcore. Dans le van, on aime bien écouter Neil Young…. Donc principalement du rock and roll.


x Tu peux parler de ce que j’appellerai la génération précédente, qui nous a personnellement marqué (et toujours d’ailleurs): Les Aarhgt Records, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, dont Mikey Young qui a mixé votre album, les Ooga Boogas etc...?

Evidemment, Mikey, Mix Master Mike! Il a son nom sur au moins 80% des sorties de la scène rock, il sait ce qu’il fait. Il a une super oreille pour ça.
Il habite de l’autre côté de la baie par rapport à Geelong. De chez nous, tu peux prendre le ferry jusqu’à chez lui ou tu peux aussi y aller en voiture mais c’est plus long.
Et donc on a pris le ferry pour aller le voir à la fin de l’année dernière pour mixer l’album et c’était vraiment bien. C’est un mec super et sa musique est incroyable.



Tu vois je pense que Total Control est le meilleur groupe australien à l’heure actuelle. Meilleur groupe australien du 21ème siècle!!!
Les Ooga Boogas sont également géniaux. Stacky, le chanteur est certainement le mec le plus drôle que je connaisse, tout comme certains de ses textes...



x Avec Living Eyes, vous avez sorti 3 albums au jour d’aujourd’hui, peux-tu me les décrire de ton point de vue?

- Le 1er, le jaune est vraiment garage.




- Le rouge (Living Large) est plus... en mode Straight Arrows je dirais.



- Le nouveau (Modern Living) est plus rock.




x Et à propos de la pochette? Qui représente des gens au téléphone...

Elle a été faite par notre amie Paris. C’était son idée. On lui a donné le nom “Modern Living”, elle a essayé plusieurs choses et on lui a dit qu’on adorait celle-ci.
Et oui tout le monde a le nez collé sur son téléphone de nos jours… et je m’inclus dedans…
D’ailleurs, Paris, joue aussi dans Hierophants et elle a un nouveau groupe qui va conquérir le monde : Parsnip. Ce sont les meilleures, 4 filles, vraiment super. Si tu n’as pas encore écouté je le recommande grandement !!





x L’album est d’ailleurs produit par Stu Mackenzie des King Gizzards (& The Lizard Wizard) qui cartonnent en ce moment...

On les connait depuis des années, ils habitent à 30 minutes de Geelong.
Je trouve qu’ils ont vraiment contribué à rendre la musique à guitare cool à nouveau. Il y a quelques années, je peux te promettre que personne ne venait à ce genre de concerts. Et aujourd’hui, un peu grâce à eux, plein de kids écoutent ce genre de musique plutôt que les merdes du top 50…
Et ce sont vraiment de gros bosseurs, ils font des trucs exceptionnels…





x Living Eyes, c’est aussi clairement un groupe à guitare, tu penses à quoi quand tu joues?

J’en sais rien... Je veux faire du rock! (ndlr: I wanna rock! en VO)


x Donc la musique? Plaisir personnel ou que tu veux partager ?

Je fais ça pour le fun et c’est définitivement un plaisir personnel. Si je ne fais pas de musique pendant un moment, je commence à me sentir bizarre. Et quand j’écris des chansons, ça fait du bien. C’est sain.


x Tu bosses à côté de la musique?

Oui bien sûr! Je travaille dans un shop de Tshirt avec mon pote Jakes des Ausmuteants. C’est cool de bosser avec des amis, ça fait la différence. Les potes ça fait tout!

Chook Race - Foggyview (english)

Our first encounter with Chook Race dates back a few years ago via the compilation, New Centre of Universe Vol.1 (Antifade 2012), which featured most of the best australian rock bands.
This comp and its sequel (Vol.2), gradually emerged as essential on our turntables as it is an incredible summary of this current and prolific scene.
Since then, we’re digging the various discographies and universes of these bands because we have to face the facts : the underground aussie scene always gave us plenty of astounding bands.
We can go back to the Saints and Radio Birdman, The Clean (for New Zealand and of course, all the Flying Nun Records’galaxy) and their huge influence, then more recently Eddy Current Suppression Ring, UV Race and all their offsprings, Dick Diver, King Gizzard, Frowning Clouds, Living Eyes, Straight Arrows, Bachelor Pad etc. The list is too long...
Also, none of them is a poor copy of the other, which makes all that more and more interesting.

But back to our topic and let’s focus on Chook Race, a trio based in Melbourne, Australia and formed by Carolyn, Rob and Matt. They released, few months ago, their 1st LP, About Time, a tiny gem of jangle pop rock, which takes them away from their more garage débuts, but turned out to be a true delight.
It tells about time. Past times for the obvious filiation with the english pop of the 80/90’s, C86, (the opening track Dentists, makes us think of the eponym band of these times), or american (the Feelies and present times, with modern melancholic melodies and others future thoughts. But this is not necessarily sad, rather warm and comforting. Musical ingenuousness : where the energy alternates with intimate moments (Always on time, Good for me ...), and where Carolyn and Matt’s voices cross each others on ardent guitar riffs and other instrumental and exalted rises (Clever, Outbound, Tables turned ...), resulting in many precious and endearing songs.

So we absolutely advise you to listen to or get this great album, masterised by Mikey Young (ex Eddy Current), who is always around the good things. And also, for information, this will be logically reissued soon by our compatriots from Beko Disques. Great new!




Matt kindly answered to some of our questions :

"Hi, my name is Matthew. I play guitar and share the vocal duties in a band called Chook Race. We come from Melbourne, Australia. It's a cold Thursday evening in Melbourne. I am taking advantage of my empty share house by rugging up in front of the fire place and roasting some chestnuts. Everyone has their own way of preparing chestnuts for roasting, me I like to cut an 'X' into them before placing them in the fire. The shell becomes really easy to peel that way. I think I'll bake some potatoes for dinner tonight."




x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ?

I try not to think too hard about music - although this can be difficult when you think too hard about everything. Although my family is not at all musical, I have always had a guitar close by. This isn't really answering your question...


x A picture ?



Since high school I have been fascinated by the 'blackboard paintings' the American artist Cy Twombly produced between 1966-1971. There is something beautiful about the fluidity of his gestures captured so vividly in such high contrast.


x Worst nightmare ?

In the past I would occasionally suffer from what I later understood to be sleep paralysis. I would frantically try and wake myself from my sleep knowing that I am dreaming however my entire body would be paralysed. I found it terrifying. In the worst cases I tried so desperately to wake myself that I would just find myself in a parallel dream, the paralysis still intact!


x The place you enjoy the most ?

I have a love for wild landscapes, I derive much joy from observing the natural order of things. So many beautiful little details become apparent if you can give nature your full attention and patience.

Chook Race - Foggyview

Notre premier contact avec Chook Race (“Course de poulet”) remonte à quelques années via une compilation, New Centre of Universe (Antifade 2012), qui regroupait la plupart des bons groupes de rock établis en Australie.
Celle-ci et son 2ème volume se sont peu à peu rendues indispensables, persistant à tourner encore et encore sur nos platines tant on y trouve un condensé terriblement bon de cette scène actuelle, foisonnante et lointaine.
Depuis, on creuse les différentes discographies et univers de tous ces groupes car il faut se rendre à l’évidence, le rock underground kangourou nous a toujours offert un bon nombre de formations meilleures les unes que les autres.
On peut remonter aux Saints et Radio Birdman, The Clean (pour la Nouvelle Zélande et bien évidemment toute la galaxie Flying Nun Records) et leur influence immense et puis plus récemment Eddy Current Suppression Ring, UV Race et leurs nombreux rejetons, Dick Diver, King Gizzard, Frowning Clouds, Living Eyes, Straight Arrows, Bachelor Pad etc... la liste est tellement longue!
Et puis, aucun d’entre eux n’est une pale copie de l’autre, ce qui les rend d’autant plus intéressants.

Mais revenons à nos moutons, ou plutôt à nos poules, et concentrons nous sur les Chook Race, trio composé de Carolyn, Rob et Matt et originaire de Melbourne. Ils viennent de sortir il y a quelques mois leur 1er LP, About Time, petit bijou de jangle pop rock qui les éloigne de leurs début plus garageux mais se révèle un peu plus comme une belle claque à chaque écoute.
Ça parle de temps, passé, pour la filiation évidente avec la pop anglaise des 80/90’s, C86, (d’autant que la chanson d’ouverture Dentists nous renvoie évidemment au groupe éponyme de cette époque) ou américaine (The Feelies), avec des mélodies mélancoliques transposées au temps présent et autres réflexions futures. Mais rien de triste pour autant. Plutôt chaleureux et rassurant. 
Candeur musicale, où l’énergie alterne avec des moments plus intimes (Always on time, Good for me...), et où les voix masculines et féminines se croisent sur des riffs ardents et autres montées instrumentales exaltées (Clever, Outbound, Tables Turned...), autant de précieuses chansons attachantes.

On vous conseille donc absolument d’écouter et de vous procurer ce bel album, masterisé par Mikey Young (ex Eddy Current), toujours dans les bons coups, et qui pour information va logiquement être réédité par nos compatriotes de Beko Disques. Excellent choix.




Matt a gentiment répondu à quelques questions :

"Salut, je m’appelle Matthew. Je joue de la guitare et partage le chant dans le groupe Chook Race. Nous venons de Melbourne en Australie. En ce moment même, on est jeudi soir et il fait frais à Melbourne. Je suis à la maison et profite de l’absence de mes colocs pour me poser, emmitouflé devant la cheminée, à me faire griller des châtaignes. Chacun a sa technique pour faire griller ses châtaignes, la mienne est d’inciser un X sur chacune avant de les placer dans le feu. Cela permet de retirer la coque très facilement, une fois prêtes. Je pense aussi que je vais faire cuire des patates pour ce soir."




x Votre définition du rock and roll ou de la musique ?

J’essaie de ne pas penser trop fort à la musique – Ce qui est un peu compliqué quand, de manière générale, on pense un peu trop à tout! Bien que ma famille ne s’intéresse pas du tout à la musique, j’ai toujours eu une guitare près de moi. Ça ne répond pas vraiment à la question...


x Une image ?



Depuis le lycée, je suis fasciné par la série „ Black Board Paintings“ de l’artiste américain Cy Twombly, qu’il a produite entre 1966 et 1971. Il y a quelque chose de magnifique qui se dégage de la fluidité de ses mouvements, parfaitement captés grâce à un si grand contraste.


x Pire cauchemar ?

Dans le passé, j’ai occasionnellement souffert de ce que j’ai compris plus tard être la paralysie du sommeil. C’est vraiment effrayant. Dans le pire des cas, j’essayais désespérément de me réveiller, pour ne seulement me réveiller qu’en rêve, dans un autre rêve, et moi toujours paralysé!


x Un endroit préféré ?

J’adore les grand paysages sauvages et je prends beaucoup de plaisir à observer l’ordre naturel des choses. Quand tu concentres toute ton attention et ta patience sur la nature, il y a tellement de superbes et minuscules détails qui en ressortent.

The Aussie quartet like to introduce themselves as "jerks from Sydney influenced by cheap beer and spicy chicken who make the kind of music The Ramones woulda made if they had an extra chromosome". Sounds promising, yeah? So let’s have a closer listen to their recent work and take a fuzzy ride through the Bachelor Pad’s discography.

The first release of the Australians was in 2011. With the tape "No Brains, No Headache" they delivered a punk-lo-fi record filled with catchy tunes that had the charm of bedroom recordings but still some potential for improvement was visible. Their song "Summer’s Coming" also caught our eye at that time and we were proud to include it on Foggy’s music selection vol. 12.
Other releases including the EP "Everyone Who's Not Us Can Suck It" in 2012 followed. The attitude of the band was clearly stated in songs like "Katy Perry's Amazing Breasts". These fellows definitely don’t take themselves too seriously and are up to fun lyrics. Throughout the last three years Bachelor Pad changed their musical style from the rough vocals to more defined ones. It is not quite easy to put them in one stated genre of music since they combine several elements from soft and poppy surf-rock and rough lo-fi punk but at the end, who cares?
"Dooming Out", their most recent release, that came out in January 2014 is filled with danceable and super catchy songs. "Movin' On", "Never Coming Back" and "Fried" are some of the examples for surfy and dreamy melodies that sometimes tend to get a bit kitschy (but in a good way). Then again, there are also songs like "Greaseball" that attract attention because of the outstanding harsh sound. Variety is definitely present on this record and it is quite a good one. Bachelor Pad worked on and perfected their style since their very first releases and yes, you can clearly hear the result of their progress on "Dooming Out" now. While listening to this LP I had associations with bands like: Useless Eaters, Ty Segall, Splashh and Fidlar. WELL BACHELOR PAD, YOU DEFINITELY DID EVERYTHING RIGHT. Strongly recommended!

x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ? or describe how do you feel when you're doing music?

We make music for the lowest common denominator. Being smart is overrated. Being original is overrated. What’s the point in trying to do something new when playing the same three chords over and over is so much fun? We feel good when we play because people give us free beer.


x A picture?



The Saints were Australia’s first punk band, putting out there first 7' in 1976. Ed Kuepper didn’t have a guitar amp, he played through a PA system instead. They emerged out of Queensland which was Australia’s most backwards and conservative state and took the world by storm. Even though I think the word "punk" is stupid they are by far the greatest punk band ever.


x Worst nightmare ?

Being hung over at work. The struggle is real.


x The place you enjoy the most ?

The beer garden of my local pub on a Sunday arvo drinking jugs of beers with my mates.

- Gerling – Children of Telepathic Experiences:
THE greatest Australian band of the 1990s, which is saying a lot because Aus music RULED back then (check out The Hard-Ons, Custard, You Am I, Regurgitator, Happyland, Magic Dirt, Mach Pelican, ANYTHING that aired on the program Recovery and you’ll see). This album effortlessly skips from one genre to the next in the space of a song and we even named our band after their song "Bachelor Pad".

- Thee Oh Sees – Help:
A modern masterpiece, one day I will write a song as good as "Enemy Destruct" but until that day I’ll just keep listening to this.

- Eddy Current Suppression Ring – Primary Colours:
The best modern day Australian rock band. DIY champions that went on to the conquer the world. The most amazing guitar tone you could possibly get from simply plugging in and playing. Mikey Young is a genius. He also mastered our album.

Le quartet australien aime se présenter comme "une bande de crétins influencés par la bière bon marché et le poulet épicé qui feraient du Ramones avec un chromosome en plus". Ça donne envie non? Jetons un œil à leur travail récent et embarquons pour une petite balade fuzzy autour de leur discographie.

Leur 1ère sortie date de 2011 avec la cassette "No Brains, No Headache", sur laquelle on découvrait un punk lo-fi aux mélodies accrocheuses. Le charme de ces premiers enregistrements (surement dans leur chambre) posait les bases d’un réel potentiel. On avait d’ailleurs playlisté leur excellente chanson "Summer Is Coming" dans notre mixtape WOL12.
Suivra en 2012 l’EP "Everyone Who's Not Us Can Suck It" sur lequel on trouve des chansons aux titres aussi hilarants que stupides comme "Katy Perry's Amazing Breasts" et on commence à bien cerner la bande de jeunes. Ils font évoluer leur style, difficile à définir, entre compositions lorgnant vers le surf rock mais toujours habitées de punk sec et de chants râpeux, mais après tout, est-il vraiment important de les cataloguer?
Dooming Out, leur nouvel album sorti en janvier 2014, est rempli de titres dansants et entrainants tels que "Movin' On’", "Never Coming Back" and "Fried". Les mélodies rêveuses y cotoient un surf rock kitsch (dans le bon sens du terme) mais aussi d’autres pépites brutes comme "Greaseball" qui, au fil des écoutes deviennent incontournables. On peut d’ailleurs évoquer d’autres artistes tels que Ty Segall, Splashh and Fidlar dans le même genre.

"Bachelor Pad est un quatuor rock composé des 4 plus grands individus venant de la capitale mondiale du Rock n Roll, Sydney (Australie). On utilise des pédales fuzz, des claviers Casio, en chantant à côté de la plaque pour concocter la meilleur powerpop que vous n’ayez jamais entendu."


x Votre définition du rock and roll ou ce que vous ressentez en jouant de la musique ?

On fait de la musique pour le plus petit dénominateur commun. Être intelligent et original, c’est complètement surfait. À quoi ça sert d’essayer de faire quelque chose de nouveau alors que c’est tellement fun de jouer les 3 mêmes accords encore et encore ? On se sent bien quand on joue car les gens nous filent des bières gratos.


x Une image ?



The Saints sont le 1er groupe de punk Australien et ont sorti leur 1er 7’ en 1976. Ed Kuepper (l’un des fondateurs) n’avait pas d’ampli donc il jouait directement branché sur ses enceintes de chaine stéréo. Ils venaient du Queensland qui était l’État le plus arriéré et conservateur d’Australie et ils ont tout emporté sur leur passage. Même si je trouve que le mot "punk" est stupide, ils sont de loin le plus grand groupe de punk ayant jamais existé.

Le coin en plein air de notre pub local, un dimanche après midi à boire des pichets de bières avec mes potes.

Crayon Fields - Interview - Pop dreamers

When we speak about the Australian rock music area, the well known groups are the first to come in mind. But when we try to find a name in the Australian independent music sphere, the name dropping is much more difficult to do, as we’re always focusing on American or English bands…

If we rummage a little further through, we can discover a young, underground, very interesting but nonetheless not very famous in France, music scene. We immediately think of the spearheads of the Australian garage band Eddy Current Suppression Ring, but also of bands coming from the Melbourne label Chapter Music, such as Crayon Fields.

We’ve discovered them a few months ago, by coming across their last album All The Pleasures Of The World (cf. WOL 3).
The type of musical encounters we like, which radiant and irresistible pop songs bewitched us immediately.

They (and more particularly their singer Geoff O’Connor) have accepted to answer few questions, looking forward to come in France to play their beautiful songs… (What are the tour organizers waiting for….?)

x How would you define your music? Can you link it to a specific genre?
Dreamy melodramatic pop.
Not really. Not that I’d have any issue with doing so, it’s just that as the years pass I find it harder to tell which genre is which.


x What type of atmosphere did you want to create in your album?
Lush and eerie.


x Is your music the result of a collective work?
Definitely. While I write the melodies, lyrics and chord progressions, the songs always become something very different once the four of us have worked through them.


x Your music reminds us of The Zombies. Like them, you think to be looking for the perfect pop song…
That’s very true. All my favourite songs are pop songs, and many of those are by the Zombies. We were lucky enough to see them play in Glasgow last year. I’m a huge fan of Colin Blunstone’s solo album ‘One Year’ too.


x What kind of music do you listen to? And what does inspire you?
I almost exclusively listen to vocal based pop music. Anything with a bit of a ‘kick’ to it.
[What inspires me] To make music in the first place? Probably the fact that I found it so terrifying to sing when I was growing up, I was too chicken to even sing ‘Happy Birthday’. I guess its largely because of this that singing always seemed like such an exciting, dangerous thing to do. Recently? Probably all the incredible pop music video clips that keep appearing. I’ve started making my own, which I’m enjoying immensely.


x So you’re also interested in cinema? Do you have film directors, or films standing for models?
Very much so. Film was one of my majors at university and I’ve recently started working on my own music clips and short films. In terms of film makers, the first that come to mind would be John Cassavettes, R W Fassbinder, Catherine Breillat, Wong Ka Wai, Woody Allen and Pedro Almodovar. They’ve all made a big impact on me personally, and so I guess many of their films have some sort of an influence on my music. I read a book about Almodovar a while ago, and his intense work ethic and approach to film making really interests me. I guess he became a role model of sorts, one of (perhaps too) many.





x Do you like reading?
Most of the books I read tend to have been written between the 1950s and 1980s. I’m a very slow reader. Recently I’ve been enjoying Raymond Carver, Eileen Myles and Harvey Swados. Francoise Sagan, Graham Green, Carson McCullers and JD Salinger are the authors that have probably had the most impact on me. I’ve been trying to read more contemporary books, though it’s just so much cheaper to buy and trade the classics from second hand stores. Literature was my other major at university.

x What about fashion? Do you care about the way you dress?
I do, though I’m too cheap to dress as well as I’d like.


x Do you have jobs apart from your band?
I do a fair bit of live mixing. I’ve done many odd jobs to pay my rent over the years. I’m not overly fussy over work, as long as gets me closer to my next synthesizer.


x And what do you like apart from playing music?
I rent DVDs and read a fair bit. I enjoy playing chess and googling myself on the internet too.


x Do you like attending gigs? And doing concerts yourself?
I like both very much. In Melbourne it is quite easy to see a band every night of the week if you have the time. Lately I’ve been a bit more selective in terms of what I’ll go out and see, simply because I don’t want to get tired of seeing the same performers too often. I love performing, especially for our own show as we get to decorate the stage and have more control over how we present ourselves.


x You’ve just come back from a tour in Australia, do you have a favorite city?
Hard to say. I adored Hamburg when I went there, though I’m sure if I was offered a free ticket to a city of my choice I’d just end up choosing New York.




x Can you say something about your label Chapter Music and the independent Australian music, which is not well known in France? We personally like The Twerps a lot!
We love the Twerps! Chapter has been incredibly supportive of us for a while now, and we really love what they release. Every time I return from overseas I’m reminded of how diverse and vibrant Australian independent music is. Perhaps it’s partly because we are a little isolated here and we have to make our own fun.

x So you have a lot of friends among the Australian bands?
Many, the Melbourne music community is both very friendly and very inbred. Everyone is either in, or being kicked out of, everyone else’s band.


x Have you Australian bands to recommend us?
Dick Diver, The Twerps, Guy Blackman, Jessica Says, Pikelet, Kes Band, Minimum Chips.


x Do you all live together?
Haha. I think we’d drive each other nuts if we lived together, or at least I’d drive the others nuts. I live in North Melbourne, which is a leafy inner suburb of Melbourne. It's relatively cheap too.


x Do you often think about your future as a band?
Sometimes, though I mostly just focus on each new song as it comes. As long as we feel we are improving as a band we’ll keep writing songs and performing. I’d certainly love for the band to travel overseas more. Roll K -

Crayon Fields - Interview - Rêveurs Pop

Quand on parle de scène rock australienne, on pense d’abord aux noms connus de tous, et d’un point de vue plus « indé », les noms se font plus rares tant nous sommes constamment abreuvés de groupes américains ou anglais…
Si l’on fouine un peu, on y trouve une scène jeune, underground, ultra intéressante et pourtant assez méconnue chez nous. On pense d’abord aux fers de lance du garage australien Eddy Current Suppression Ring, mais aussi aux sorties du label de Melbourne, Chapter Music, et plus précisément Crayon Fields.

Cela fait déjà quelques mois que nous les avons découverts, un peu par hasard (cf. WOL 3), via leur dernier album All The Pleasures Of The World.
Une rencontre musicale comme on les aime, qui nous a immédiatement envoutée à coup de pop lumineuse et de mélodies totalement irrésistibles…

Ils (et plus particulièrement leur chanteur Geoff O'Connor) ont très simplement accepté de répondre à quelques unes de nos questions en attendant de venir faire un tour en France nous jouer leur si belles chansons... (Messieurs les tourneurs qu’attendez-vous ?)

x Comment définirais-tu votre musique ? Et par quel genre musical ?
De la pop rêveuse et mélodramatique.
Et pas vraiment en terme de « genre musical ». Ce n'est pas faute d’avoir essayé c'est juste que les années passant je trouve difficile de délimiter et de définir les genres musicaux.


x En termes d’atmosphère ?
Quelque chose de riche et d’étrange.


x Votre musique est-elle le résultat d’un travail collectif ?
Totalement. J'écris les mélodies, les paroles et les chœurs, mais les morceaux deviennent toujours très différents une fois que nous avons tous les quatre bossés dessus.


x Votre univers nous évoque The Zombies. Dans la recherche de la chanson pop parfaite...
C'est vrai. Toutes mes chansons préférées sont des chansons pop, et plusieurs d'entre elles sont des morceaux de The Zombies. On a eu la chance de les voir jouer à Glasgow l'année dernière. Je suis un grand fan de l'album solo "One Year" de Colin Blunstone.


x Qu’est ce que vous écoutez et qu’est ce qui vous inspire ?
J’écoute presque exclusivement des morceaux pop basés sur la voix. Plus généralement tout ce qui est un peu «punchy ».
Ce qui m’inspire pour créer des morceaux? Probablement le fait que chanter était pour moi si terrifiant quand j'étais ado…J'étais trop peureux/froussard rien que pour chanter "joyeux anniversaire" ! Je suppose que c'est en grande partie à cause de ça que chanter m'est toujours apparu si excitant, et dangereux.
Et ce qui m'inspire récemment? Surement tous les clips vidéo incroyables de pop music qui continuent d'être créés.


 x Donc le cinéma/vidéo t’intéresse aussi? As-tu des réalisateurs ou des films modèles ?

J'aime beaucoup le cinéma oui. C'était un de mes cours les plus importants à l'université et j'ai récemment commencé à travailler sur mes propres clips vidéo et courts métrages. J'adore ça !
Au sujet des réalisateurs, les premiers qui me viennent à l'esprit sont John Cassavetes, R.W.Fassbinder, Catherine Breillat, Wong Kar Wai, Woody Allen et Pedro Almodovar.

Comme ils ont tous eu un grand impact sur moi, je suppose que beaucoup de leurs films ont eu une grande influence sur ma musique.
J'ai lu un livre sur Almodovar, et son éthique du travail ainsi que son approche du cinéma m'ont beaucoup intéressé. Je pense qu'il est devenu une sorte de modèle pour moi, parmi bien d'autres (trop peut être d'ailleurs)…




x Et au niveau lecture, bouquins ?
La plupart des livres que je lis ont été écris entre les années 50 et les années 80. Je suis très lent à la lecture... Récemment j'ai bien aimé Raymond Carver, Eileen Myles, et Harvey Swados.
Et sinon, Françoise Sagan, Graham Green, Carson McCullers et JD Salinger sont les auteurs qui m'ont surement le plus marqué.
J'ai essayé de lire davantage de littérature contemporaine, mais les classiques restent les bouquins les moins chers et les plus faciles à trouver chez les bouquinistes. La littérature était aussi une matière majeure pour moi à la fac.


x Et la mode. Tu fais attention à ce que tu portes?
Oui. Mais je suis trop à la dèche pour m'habiller comme je le voudrais !


x Tu n’as pas de taf à côté ?
Je mixe un peu. J'ai eu beaucoup de petits boulots pour payer mon loyer. Je ne suis pas totalement porté sur le travail, mais j'ai de quoi économiser pour mon prochain synthé !


x Et tu aimes faire quoi à part jouer?

Je loue des DVD et je lis un peu. J'aime bien jouer aux échecs et taper mon nom dans google aussi.


x Tu aimes aller à des concerts? Et jouer sur scène?

J’adore les deux. C'est assez facile de voir un groupe différent chaque soir à Melbourne si t'as le temps. Dernièrement j'ai été un peu plus sélectif sur ce que j'allais voir, simplement parce que je ne veux pas me lasser de voir les même concerts trop souvent.
J'adore jouer sur scène surtout pour le côté show. On a commencé à décorer la scène et à avoir plus de contrôle sur ce que nous faisons et la manière dont nous le présentons.


x Vous revenez d’une tournée hors Australie, une ville préférée ?
Difficile à dire. J'ai adoré Hambourg quand j'y suis allé, même si je suis sûr que si j'avais un aller-retour gratuit pour une ville je choisirais tout simplement New York




x Parlez-nous de Chapter Music et de la scène indépendante australienne qui n'est pas très connue en France, nous on aime beaucoup The Twerps !
On adore The Twerps !
Notre label Chapter Music nous soutient énormément depuis un moment maintenant, et on aime vraiment ce qu'ils sortent. A chaque fois que je reviens de l'étranger je me rends compte combien la scène indépendante australienne est diversifiée et stimulante. C'est peut être parce que nous sommes un peu isolés ici, et que nous devons donc nous amuser par nous même.


x Vous avez donc plein d’amis musiciens?
Beaucoup. La communauté musicale de Melbourne est très amicale et très liée. Tout le monde a été dans tel ou tel groupe, ou s'est fait dégagé de tel autre groupe…
Je pense à Dick Diver, The Twerps, Guy Blackman, Jessica Says, Pikelet, Kes Band, Minimum Chips…


x Vous vivez ensemble avec le groupe à Melbourne?
Haha. Je pense qu'on se prendrait la tête si on vivait ensemble, ou plutôt je prendrais la tête aux autres. Je vis dans le quartier nord de Melbourne, une banlieue verte. C'est aussi plutôt bon marché.


x Tu penses souvent à votre futur en tant que groupe?
Oui, parfois. Mais la plupart du temps je me concentre seulement sur les nouveaux morceaux. Tant qu'on sent qu'on s'améliore au niveau musical on continue à écrire des morceaux et à jouer... Et j’aimerai bien qu’on ait plus l’occasion de voyager avec le groupe…
