No hood, but fishing nets for Howlin Banana and Azbin Records, at the end of this year. In talented fishermen they realize a very nice catch, as well as catching our attention, in the coolest manner, the Kaviar Special. 
Straight from the breeding pool that is Rennes (french city in Brittany), as well as their basin brethren (Catfight, Rigg, Blackjag Davy, Bikini George, Sapin…), we could have assumed their sound to be delicate, as the delicacy they’re named after… That’s not really what’s happening. Still, and « Oh joy ! », it will proudly take place on your table, between the « foie gras » and the oysters, for the french here at least, on the christmas table. Ok, maybe not on the table, but for sure in your ears. They went through enough bullshit all year long, not to reward them with something good. 

« Special », that they are. More than just torturing the fuzz and the good vibes like no one else, we feast on their melodies like Dating A Slut, Summer, Shirley, Ptit Cul or Sabadidon ( we could easily feast on all of them actually, because much more than being just « good » they sum up everything we like about the rock scene these days). 

Precious, also, for it’s been so long we were waiting for something wild and dirty out of the capital of Brittany. That, my friends, is done. And we are happy. And we are filled, but not enough to pass on devouring this delicious white vinyl coming out on the 10th of December.

Adrien, Kaviar bassist of the band kindly answered to some of our questions...



« We started in the beginning of 2012. We four, were living together in a house in Rennes, Brittany, and used to rehearse in the garage (we’re playing garage, the real one). We’re influenced by punk and sixties music but especially the modern era like Burger Record, In The Red Records etc… »


x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ? or describe how do you feel when you're doing music?

When you keep on listening to bands, and going to gigs, it makes you want to create something , to write a song, to put some arrangements here and there.
It just depends on one or two bands and then it click, you’re getting into it, you compose, you play, where you can.
For me, Rock and Roll is the 50’s, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley etc…
Today it doesn’t really mean anything. Like a tattoo of Johnny Hallyday is rock and rollish…


x A picture?



Los Saicos. Four Peruvians who released a megastylish album in 1964. Lost in deepest Peru, nobody really understands from what they could put out this so dirty and wild sound. They only were influenced by british bands from the 60’s but I really think they influenced a lot of people. Demolicion ! is an incredible song where they explain that they want to blow up the noisy train station next to their place that keeps them from rehearsing properly. This is definitely an anthem.


x Worst nightmare ?

When we were touring last summer, driving at like 80 mph on the highway, the back doors of our van suddenly opened… The trunk was full with all our instruments and stuff. So we stopped on the emergency lane, freaked out, and fortunately there was just one guitar missing ! It was 3 in the morning, the highway was desert and we hurried to find grab the guitar back before a car would run over it. Like a miracle, it was intact even not out of tune… In my head, I was already seeing all our amps crushed on the road and a big pile-up… That would have been a fucking nightmare…


x The place you enjoy the most?

« Cocoon », it’s a studio, not really far from Rennes. We’re hanging out there to record, rehearse, jam, sip some cocktails and juggle. Laid back.

- Bare Wires - Idle Dreams
Matthew Melton is a genius, tyrannical but genius.

- Ramones - Ramones 
The pure and authentic energy. This album is incredible. I never heard anything else that would hit me like that. Sniffing some glue and not the slightest guitar solo.

 - Harlem - Hippies
Harlem is the kind of band which makes you confident. They have amazing melodies, you can feel that there is no brain racking, it’s so spontaneous, it’s beautiful. It makes you want to chill with them. I think they split, that´s a shame.

Point de hotte, mais des filets pour Howlin Banana et Azbin Records, en cette fin d’année. En pêcheurs de talents, ils réussissent une très belle prise et nous gratifient d’une des meilleures surprises de 2013, Kaviar Special. 
Tout droit accouchés du ventre de l’esturgeonnière rennaise, comme d’autres de leurs frères de culture (Catfight, Rigg, Blackjag Davy, Bikini George, Sapin…), on aurait pu penser leur son délicat en référence au met contenu dans leur nom… ce n’est pas vraiment ça. 
En revanche, et « Ô joie », Les Kaviar Special se poseront bel et bien entre les huîtres et le foie gras, peut-être pas sur la table mais au moins dans vos oreilles. Vous aviez de toute façon assez entendu de conneries pour l’année.

« Special », ils le sont. Car en plus de torturer le fuzz et la bonne humeur comme personne, on se délecte de leurs tirades sonores telles que Dating A Slut, Summer, Shirley, Ptit Cul ou Sabadidon (on pourrait aisément toutes les citer car en plus d’être de bonnes chansons elles résument très bien tout ce qu’on aime dans la scène rock d’aujourd’hui).

Précieux aussi, puisque ça faisait longtemps qu’on attendait que la capitale bretonne frémisse de rock sale et sauvage et bien voilà, on est gâté et heureux, et quand en plus ce bien beau premier album sort sous forme d’un vinyle blanc le 10 décembre, on a envie d’en reprendre.

« On a commencé début 2012, on habitait tous les 4 dans une maison à Rennes, où on répétait dans le garage (on fait du garage, le vrai). Nos influences sont punk et sixties mais surtout modernes, Burger Records, In The Red etc... »


x Votre définition du rock and roll ou ce que vous ressentez en jouant de la musique ?

À force d'écouter des groupes et d'aller à des concerts, tu commences à avoir envie de créer quelque chose, de monter un morceau, de poser des arrangements ici et là.
Il suffit d'un ou deux groupes "déclics" et t'es lancé, tu composes et tu joues, où tu peux.
Le rock'n roll pour moi c'est les 50's, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley etc.. Aujourd'hui ça veut plus dire grand chose. Un tattoo de Johnny c'est rock'n roll.


x Une image?



Les Saicos. Quatre péruviens qui sortent un album mégastylé en 1964. Paumés au fin fond du Pérou, personne ne comprend vraiment d'où ils ont sorti ce son si crade et sauvage. Ils avaient pour seule influence des groupes british des 60's. Eux ont influencé pas mal de monde je pense. Demolicion! titre incroyable où ils expliquent vouloir faire péter la station de train, voisine de leur local, qui les empêche de répéter. Un hymne.


x Pire cauchemar ?

En tournée l'été dernier, à 130 km/h sur l'autoroute, en pleine nuit, les portes arrières du camion se sont ouvertes. Le coffre était blindé de matos. On s'est arrêté en panique sur la bande d'arrêt d'urgence, une seule guitare manquait. L'autoroute était déserte, il était 3h du mat et on s'est dépêché de la retrouver avant qu'une voiture ne passe dessus. Elle n'avait rien, miracle. Même pas désaccordée.
Dans ma tête je voyais déjà tous les amplis explosés sur la route, et un méga carambolage. Ça aurait été un putain de cauchemar.


x Un endroit préféré?

Cocoon, c'est un studio à quelques kilomètres de Rennes, on se pose là bas pour enregistrer, répéter, jammer, faire des apéros dinatoires et du jonglage. On est tranquille.

L'énergie pure, authentique. Cet album est incroyable. Je n'ai jamais retrouvé d'album qui m'ait autant scotché. Aucun solo et du sniffage de colle.

- Harlem - Hippies
Harlem c'est le genre de groupe qui te file la confiance. Ils ont des mélodies incroyables, tu sens qu'ils ne se prennent pas la tête, c'est tellement spontané, c'est beau. Ça donne envie d'aller chiller avec eux. Ils ont arrêté je crois, c'est bien dommage.

x Cheap Time - I'd Rather Be Alone

Cheap Time has released its 2nd LP “Fantastic Explanations (and Similar Situations)” few weeks ago, still on In the Red Records. It’s a great new record on which they kind of move away from their first garage sound, but which is still worthwhile.



x Gestapo Khazi - Openhouse

We still don’t have a lot of information about these guys from Long Beach but they’re always releasing good shit. This track is from the Burger Records cassette and it’s still good and elegant. Looking forward to see them playing in Paris somedays…



x Carnivores - Planet Dream

Carnivores, from Atlanta, has released a great album (“If I’m Ancient”) which deserves a close listening.
 


x Dead Ghosts - I Want You to Know

Dead Ghosts are from Vancouver. They delight us with their clever first LP released by Florida’s Dying.



x Yuck - Holing Out

Yuck’s debut is very expected. Their first LP produced by Fat Possum will be released on February 15th. 2 members of Yuck are ex- musicians of the band Cajun Dance Party. Some people say that Yuck is highly influenced by famous American indie bands (even if they’re English.) And in fact after listening to their album, what people say seems totally relevant.



 
x Soft Powers - i. i began to cringe at eight ten

Anderson, Fletcher, Gilmore and Bailey are doing dream pop. All their songs are available on their bandcamp. Few months ago, I hesitated about including one of their songs on a Foggy compilation but I chose something else. Now it’s done: they’re present on one of our compilations!



x Dream Band - Dad And The Medicine Man

I’m fond of Dreamband’s EP which I discovered by chance… This song is just awesome, and reminds me Ride. They’re from NYC but they could have been signed by Creation Records. You must also listen to “Dragonfly”!



x Viva L'American Death Ray Music - A Petit Death

This is the 6th album (Miles of Smiles, Towns of Frowns) of Nicholas Ray and his brilliant band. It has been released this time by Mexican Summer at the beginning of December. It still conveys a deep and intense rock and roll.



x Sic Alps - Nathan Livingston Maddox

These kings of lo-fi explained that they recorded their next album (“Napa Asylum”, released since January 25th by Drag City) with: « a delay pedal, reverb tank, two microphones, $100 preamp and Tascam 388 ». What proves that there’s no need to have expensive instruments to do good music!



x Atlas Sound - How to Pass the Time

Last month, Bradford Cox, Deerhunter’s singer, gave out 4 recording sessions called « Bedroom Databank ». This song is taken from one of these sessions. Bradford is prolific and extremely talented!

Beaucoup d’actualité pour le retour des enfants terribles Death Set. Un an après le décès de l’un des deux fondateurs (Beau V. RIP), ils préparent la sortie de leur prochain album logiquement pour le 15 mars chez Counter (la division rock de Ninja Tune). Quelques nouveaux titres (comme celui-ci), une mixtape complètement folle (« Artificially Sweetened ») : du lourd en perspective.


 
x Rayon Beach - Shocking Aqua

Quoi de plus réjouissant que de voir débarquer en ce début d’année 2011 les Texans de Rayon Beach (qu’on avait déjà pu écouter via Hozac, entre autre) sur le génial label parisien Plastic Spoon Records. Au programme donc pour le 15 janvier, la sortie d’un 7’’, pressage et édition limités bien sûr. Un conseil : ne passez pas à coté. La preuve avec cet extrait.



x Peach Kelli Pop - Do the Eggroll

Allie Hanlon (vu avec les White Wires) est Peach Kelli Pop. Juste de la pop irrésistible, toute droite débarquée d’Ottawa.

Fine fleur de la scène garage Européenne, ces londoniens produisent une musique dont on ne peut que se délecter. Même si elle reste difficile à trouver…

x Yuck - Holing Out

Yuck est attendu. Leur 1er LP, sorti chez Fat Possum, label qui devient décidément incontournable, sera dans les bacs le 15 février 2011. Dans Yuck il y a 2 anciens membres des Cajun Dance Party, jeune groupe anglais éphémère et plutôt doué. Certains disent que Yuck s’inscrit dans la grande lignée des grands groupes indie américain. Aux premières écoutes de l’album, ça se tient.

Très gros coup de cœur pour Deam Band et leur EP 3 titres découvert un peu par hasard... Cette chanson est majestueuse, un peu comme si Ride renaissait de ses cendres. Ils sont New Yorkais mais ça aurait très bien pu sortir chez Creation Records non ? Dragonfly est aussi à écouter de toute urgence.



x Viva L'American Death Ray Music - A Petit Death

6e album (Miles of Smiles, Towns of Frowns) pour Nicholas Ray et son groupe génial. Il est sorti cette fois ci chez Mexican Summer début décembre et il navigue toujours dans des eaux profondément rock ‘n’ roll.

Bradford Cox a gentiment distribué, le mois dernier, 4 sessions d’enregistrements appelées « Bedroom Databank » dont est extraite cette chanson. Oui, il est prolifique. Oui il est extrêmement talentueux. Et on continue à suivre de près ses sorties jusqu’à la prochaine tournée de Deerhunter !
