Küken - Foggyview (english)

It was a called winter night in the dark basement of the Gun Club, in Hamburg. That night was normally all about Apache and Glitz, and Küken took the occasion, for what was to be there first "official" gig, the warm up. First gig and first slap for our how-so-gentle-ears. Not even the time to order that beer that we're reaped by a huge wave of just-power! And it will electrify us from the first to the very last one note of a set played to the speed of light. Bass, drum, guitar, perfect combination, who are those guys?

Küken may be starting in the music game but its members are long in the deal. You might have heard the Schaul twins in a more power pop punk adventure, with the Kidnappers, a little success around, with some releases on Alien Snatch and Rip Off Records, among others. 
The chicks (Küken in english, the bird) chose a more basic register, violent, angry and are totally assuming the spirit : We do it loud, fast and good. Having seen them in multiple occasions (at the Get lost fest 2, lately) it's always the same result, a big adrenalin shot which makes you blissful. Don't miss them if they play nearby, it is farmly advised. (mouhahaha).

From a record point of view, they only have a 7’ out for now. It's called Black Rose 7' and it's thanks to the excellent Bachelor Records. On there, they just settle things down, with first, the punk missile "Black Rose" and then, the more power pop-ish House Horse Pig, working just as good nonetheless. For the rest, you'll have to wait, but good news, they just recorded their first album in Berlin with Nene Barratto (Movie Star Junkies and Tapemachinegoddess) and it's probably gonna be out next year. Definition of Rock and Roll Punk (Modern Pets) feeling -> it always feels exhausting.

C’était un soir d’hiver il y a quelques mois dans la cave sombre du Gun Club de Hambourg. Ce soir là on était venu voir les américains d’Apache et Glitz, et les locaux Küken en avaient profité pour se taper l’incruste pour leur 1er concert " officiel " en débutant la soirée. 1er concert et 1ère claque pour nos gentilles oreilles. À peine le temps de commander une bière qu’on se fait tacler par une vague de puissance qui nous électrisera de la 1ère à la dernière note de ce set enchainé à la vitesse de la lumière. Guitare, basse, batterie, trio parfait et bim, qui sont ces types ?

Küken débute dans le music game mais pas ses membres. On a pu croiser les jumeaux Schaul dans un registre plus power pop punk au sein des Kidnappers, qui ont eu leur petit succès, avec diverses sorties chez Alien Snatch et Rip Off Records entre autres.
Les poussins (Küken en allemand) eux, on choisit un registre beaucoup plus basique, violent et rageux, et assume complètement le côté : on balance tout, fort, vite et bien. Pour les avoir revus à plusieurs reprises (notamment au Get Lost Fest 2), la formule prend à chaque fois et on en ressort complètement béats. A ne pas louper s’ils passent par chez vous, vous pouvez vous jeter vous dans la basse cour les yeux fermés ... (mouhahaha).

Du point de vue discographique, ils n’ont pour l’instant sorti qu’un 2 titres, Black Rose 7’ chez les excellents Bachelor Records, sur lequel ils marquent sereinement leur territoire en débutant avec la roquette punk "Black Rose" qui nous entrainera vers une facette plus power pop mais pas moins efficace, avec House Horse Pig. Pour le reste, il faudra patienter, mais bonne nouvelle, ils viennent d’enregistrer leur 1er album en 3 jours à Berlin avec Nene Barratto (Movie Star Junkies and Tapemachinegoddess), et ça sortira surement l’année prochaine. Votre définition du rock and roll ou de la musique ?

La définition du rock and roll punk (selon les Modern Pets) : c’est toujours exténuant.

Je n’ai pas d’image mais jetez un œil à ce best of des meilleurs points en tennis. (ça ne représente que l’avis de la section corde de Küken)




x Pire cauchemar ?

Dormir dans la chambre réservée aux groupes des mecs de Wildwax Shows.

Les toilettes du boulot et le casino en ligne.

There are certain times when certain things are not expected. There are some other times when we might think that, once again when it’s coming from the dungeon of the Rock N’ Roll kings, understand here « Castle Face Records », it’s gonna be something huge. 

This time was one of the first ones. One little push on the play button and POW! the big slap it was, and nobody saw it coming. Not content with not taking any holydays, Castle Face don’t even let us breathe. But we won’t lie, we won’t deny ourselves, here. 

We don’t know much about those three fellows, just that Byron Blum is also playing the guitar with Useless Eaters. Here he stands aside Melissa Blue and Aaron Diko. John Dwyer (Thee Oh Sees) himself made this prophetic announcement in the last Castle Face newsletter : « It’s an incredibly great record with some timeless tunes, a sound all its own ! ». We might just agree with him. 

There is something here sounding like The Fall and we could also call to mind the musical blasts from their label colleagues The Mallard or Total Control. 
Punk is there sound but we could say sick and minimal pop », or whatever you want. The crisp and sustained drums bring perfectly up the soarings of their synthetic sounds, when the guitar gladly tears Melissa and Byron’s vocal interferences to shreds. 

POW! is coming from San Francisco and, as it could have been witnessed those past few months, the gentrification there is source of many contestations and revolts. The title « Hi-Tech Boom » (which is the name of one of their songs and of their album) is a direct reference to that phenomenon. We can be delighted that such a problem, which can be found in many esteemed cities and we can relate to, from Paris to Hamburg, or from London to San Francisco, is spoken of in (such) an album.

x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ? or describe how do you feel when you're doing music?

Music is a religion. Rock N roll music is broken glass. It's empowering. It's a baseball bat.

Engine Works. It's a living workspace where I record and play music and hang out.

Il est certaines fois où l’on ne s’y attend pas. Il est d’autres fois où on pourrait tout d’abord se dire que, venant encore une fois du donjon des rois du royaume Rock N’ Roll, j’ai nommé Castle Face Records, on pourrait deviner qu’il va s’agir de quelque chose de fort.

Cette fois là était une des premières. Une pression sur le bouton lecture du player et POW! la claque à laquelle personne ne s’attendait un 14 janvier. Non content de ne jamais prendre de vacances, Castle Face ne nous laisse pas un moment de répit. Mais ne soyons pas hypocrites, nous n’allons pas bouder notre plaisir.

On ne sait pas grand chose de ces trois nouveaux venus, sinon que Byron Blum est aussi guitariste pour Useless Eaters. Ici, il accompagne Melissa Blue et Aaron Diko. John Dwyer (Thee Oh Sees) himself l’annonçait dans la dernière newsletter du label « Its an incredibly great record with some timeless tunes, a sound all its own » « c’est un album incroyable, avec des morceaux indémodables et un son bien à lui. », on ne peut qu’être d’accord avec lui. Il y a un côté The Fall dans leur musique et on aurait aussi envie d’évoquer les déflagrations de leurs collègues de label The Mallard et Total Control.

Punk est leur son, mais on pourrait dire pop malade et minimale. La rythmique cradingue porte parfaitement les envolées électroniques de leur vieux synthétiseur, et entre les échanges de voix de Melissa et Byron, la guitare prend un malin plaisir à cisailler à tout va…

Les POW! viennent de San Francisco et, comme on a pu le voir et le lire ces derniers mois, la gentrification y suscite de nombreuses révoltes et critiques. Le titre « Hi-Tech Boom » ( qui est le nom d’une de leur chansons et de leur album) en est directement issu. On ne peut que se réjouir que ce problème, qui se retrouve dans de nombreuses autres villes chères à nos cœurs, de Paris à Hambourg, ou de Londres à San Francisco, soit évoqué dans un (si bon) album…

x Votre définition du rock and roll ou ce que vous ressentez en jouant de la musique ?

La musique est une religion. Le Rock N Roll c’est du verre brisé. Ça donne un sentiment de puissance dévastatrice. C’est une batte de baseball.


x Une image?




C’est un autoportrait de mon pote Tim Presley (ndlr : White Fence) sur qui je suis tombé aujourd’hui.
J’aime beaucoup, c’est très ressemblant.


x Pire cauchemar ?

Engine Works, c’est un lieu de travail super vivant où je joue, j’enregistre et traine…
