Foggy Girls Club's Merry Best Of 2013 - Die große Liste

2013 is coming to an end and, as an outlet, we have the impression that permission is given to speak freely. So, for this wonderful year we would like to thank:
The yelling neighbors, the bookers that forgets to book, the whole french (maybe worldwide) political landscape, One Direction, the conjuncture, the french anti-gay marriage activists, the breaking strings, the ripped drum skins, the brain drain, the dumbs that remain, the japanese government for Fukishima, Kim Jung Un, the NSA, that big guy between you and the stage, the yelling shorties... we might forget some, but well, all those or what's keeping us angry and willing to mess all up, stir up troubles like we know how.

However, and a tiny bit more seriously, we come up with a huge almost unreadable list of what we listened to and loved during the year (with probably some left behind, and we're sorry for that). No "top", no chart, because it's impossible, but a list of a hundred albums, EP's and singles that we strongly recommend you to buy blind or at least listen to.

And since we're here, we would like to give a big kiss on the cheek to all of you artists, bands, labels, record stores, gigs organizers, venues, bars, worldwide krabers and to the informed audience for this great year.

Happy New Year, keep the faith and our devoted thoughts to Mister Lou Reed.

The Foggy Girls Club.

Pic © Marion Costentin 15/08/2013

Version française ici

Iceage sustain the mystery, that's for sure.
Outsiders of La Route du Rock 2013 edition, they stood in for new yorkers DIIV who had cancelled their european tour a few months back.
If those are undeniably good, I was thrilled that the danish were coming, even though our first meeting after the show, was a bit frosty.
Given the amount of good and bad stress these guys must endure, you understand their attitude. Some will mistake it for arrogance, I think it might be suspicion, considering how they started and the controversy that their provoking symbolism set off.
We will spare you the details of the press conference which was not really worthy of interest.

“Somehow things are still not lost
But I sure feel alienated
Is their flesh disintegrated
These days I'm numb and faded” – Coalition (You’re Nothing – 2013)

Foggy Girls Club's short story being closely related to Iceage, it is interesting to look back at the past few years.
My first contact with the band dates back to 2011, after their 1st LP "New Brigade" came out, thanks to the late webzine Altered Zones and a bunch of articles mentioning a brand new Northern wind.
"New Brigade", frontal impact, adrenaline explosion… Who are these savages? What do they want? How do I get another fix?

Then came Escho and Tambourhinoceros, two Copenhagen-based labels who took charge of the youngsters. What happened next was simple : I ordered the LP, it came in a pizza box, we exchanged a few e-mails and I've kept, ever since, a warm connection with these people -and this town- who have allowed me to discover this thriving danish scene they stand up for (Thulebasen, CTM, Lower, New Spring, etc…).

The Escho/Iceage relationship is strong and definitive :
”They were there from the start when we were kind of useless. They held us to get something done. We knew these guys way way before we did music in a more serious constellation. So basically they’re just friends and at one point they just put it out. And if it wasn’t for Escho I think we wouldn’t be as much as active and playing as much as we are. They definitely make sure that we don’t just sit on our asses… “

Posh Isolation is also worth mentioning as another pioneer Copenhagen label, who put out their tape : “Posh Isolation is a mainly industrial music label but they also product punk and weird stuff from Copenhagen scene. So they also help young boys that does something in rehearsal room to make it exist I guess.

“Parallel crossing lines
I don't want to fall behind
Is it too much to cope
Not running down an empty hole” - New Brigade (album S/T 2011)

To sum up, here's a bunch of young danish guys who started a band, released an album and caused a ripple : a modern punk classic that became a favorite on many record players.

Of course, things shook up and they aroused a lot of interest. They're pretty straightforward about it :
“We had a bunch of possibilities but they all seemed to be quite horrible. Matador seemed to be the more honest out there. And we signed with them and later maybe found out that it wasn’t the case anyway, but now we’re stuck with them.”
This honesty and sharp opinion on such a cult label (and big machine) as Matador, stand out from the usual bullshit, like some kind of conscious innocence proudly and firmly bearing their vision of art.
“About large label, it’s not that it’s horrible but it’s just that we, as individuals, have differences with them, it’s like misconception about how you should get people to listen to your music. (…). We’re interested in reaching a broader audience (…) but it’s like everything has a dollar sign at the end. So it doesn’t really make sense for us.”

Now on to the music. Their second album, "You're Nothing" came out early this year and notably affirmed that our friends were not just a flash in the pan but a genuine black diamond. Joyful in a half-light, it proves to be extremely inspiring. It leaves you disorientated, faced with something great. The piercing compositions and sharp lyrics, carried by a sometimes furious, sometimes moving chant, evoke flashes of heartache and frustration you'd just want to blow up with great spirit and revenge.
To dig up old feelings buried deep within, one of the greatest albums of the year.

“A mere blow of wind could turn me into light
Hands everywhere covering me
Feels so overwhelming I can't breathe
But bliss is momentary anyhow
Yet worth living for - take me now” - Ecstasy (You’re Nothing – 2013)

But let's get back to the Fort de Saint-Père in Saint Malo. On this 15th of August 2013, the sun is looking over as we are walking to the big stage. The young danish are about to open the festival, following Jacco Gardner's lulling melodies.
Dressed in black, they are quietly setting up to start their fierce performance. Not being very famous in France, and having played almost only in Paris, it might be a little difficult to win over the breton crowd, nonetheless present despite the early hour.
Nevermind. "Awake", the vampires surely are and their battle against sunlight is starting.
They are spitting it out and the scorching heat, hitting full face, will not stop them.
Angel-faced Elias Bender Rønnenfelt has tremendous charisma. In a perpetual inner struggle, he weaves in and out of his band's sonic shots to lighten them up with his occult, fascinating flame. 45 minutes of rage and they're gone. It was good, it was strong.

“I imagine that this is how it would feel to drown in light.”- Count Me In – Sexdrome cover (New Brigade 2011)

I then reach to their manager/papa bear, Nis. Half of Escho and a Copenhagen music activist, I've met him before, via his excellent band Thulebasen.

Hours and drinks go by in a nice and hearty atmosphere, unlike the beginnings. We talk about everything, from travel to food, Aqua, the nazi dude in Ace of Base etc… I keep teasing Nis about the next Thulebasen album. It's a mystery, him being busy enough recording his friends, it's hard to find the time to complete his own project.

To get back to Iceage, it's a group of honest young people and that you can't take away from them. They're a little abashed at the media circus around them. They know where they came from and what they want. For sure, their songs have carried us away and will carry us again for a long time to their northern parts, no matter the destination, only the journey is important as long as they are the soundtrack.

On my way back, I think about "New Brigade" that still gives me the chills.

"It’s within me, it’s within you, it’s within me and you"… (New Brigade - 2011)

Iceage - Frihed og broderskab / Route du Rock 2013

Pic © Marion Costentin 15/08/2013

English version here.

“Somehow things are still not lost
But I sure feel alienated
Is their flesh disintegrated
These days I'm numb and faded” – Coalition (You’re Nothing – 2013)

“Parallel crossing lines
I don't Want To Fall Behind
Is It Too Much To Cope
Not Running Down An Empty Hole” - New Brigade (album S/T 2011)

“A mere blow of wind could turn me into light
Hands everywhere covering me
Feels so overwhelming I can't breathe
But bliss is momentary anyhow
Yet worth living for - take me now” - Ecstasy (You’re Nothing – 2013)

“I imagine that this is how it would feel to drown in light.”- Count Me In – Sexdrome cover (New Brigade 2011)

"It’s within me, it’s within you, it’s within me and you"… (New Brigade - 2011)

The Bitters – Interview Amère

ENGLISH VERSION

Here are the questions...

A : Levinas, Sartre, Foucault.

x Votre dernier coup de cœur musical ?
A : Kurt Cobain

The TTC (local transit)

x Votre dernier souvenir/histoire brumeux (Foggy Story) ?
Foggy as Hell!

Costco and the Toronto Coffee Conspiracy

Bitter Interview – The Bitters

Hey,
Ben and I both answered most of the questions, and then split up the rest of them.
Love from Toronto,
Aerin
xo

french version

Foggy Girls Club: Here are the questions:
x What is the story of The Bitters ? The meeting between you both ( love story ?)... and who’s doing what?

Ben: Well Aerins brother dated my sister which lead me to start hanging out with Aerins brother, but then Aerins sister got involved with me (love stylez) and we had a thing going for a minute, but then Aerins mum (Gwen) didn't approve so I had to approach things differently by starting a band with Aerin because its the only way I ever get to see her sister. I love her so much. Angel Fogel, I love you.

Aerin: Our name came out of the bitter blood that got created in the messy situation. That's all gone now though, and my sister is on to her current love, Murphy. He's more her type. Anyways, Ben plays guitar and I play drums.

x How was your teenage life ?, What were your dreams when you were kids?

B: My teenage life was awesome. I had a shitload of acne and I slept a lot, and called my mum a "bitch" every day. My dream when I was a kid was to be a pro baseball player, but then I lost 2 of my fingers in shop class so that meant no more baseball and not as many video games, so i turned to music.

A: My teenage life was full of angst and medicinal-grade pot that I smoked for free off my high-school sweetheart's bandmates. It was also full of too much eye-liner and decade-old grunge albums and ketchup chips. I also owned 4 Maine Coon cats that were left in my bushes by the black magic working old man next door, and these cats all died within two days of each other for inexplicable reasons. Needless to say, I suffered through a deep depression in the latter years of my high school career, despite being surrounded by art school indie nerds who spent their lunches making elaborate murals on each others' backs with body paint and biodegradable sparkles.

x What did music change for yourself, in your life ?

A: Playing music reminds me to drink a lot of water all the time.
B: I started to sing in the shower a lot more, and generally have nicer days.

x Your name is link to your sound, it’s bitter, isn’t it? Why did you chose this kind of sound ? like brut, tuff, dirty, flanger….?

B: We chose the Flanger brut sound and took music this way because we wanted to actually get in there and really fuck the music, ya know? Fuck it up all day and then do it again.

A: I bought Ben a Flanger pedal for his 12th birthday when he broke 2 of his fingers.

x We grew up (thanks to our parents) in rock music from 60,s, 70s, 80’s etc… a music which was always linked to others art (like arty). What are your link with others arts?

A: I write novels for my friends to allow them an escape from their everyday realities.
B: I kind of grew up in music, but I also grew up in cinema and also inside books.

x How do you think your music is universal?
I get up every morning, eat some oats and just THINK IT.

x What about your first LP? East General, what is the cover? (baby/foetus in a mutilated body)? and why Mexican Summer?

The cover was done by our friend Dona who is a rich chick from the middle east and she owns the soccer club West Ham United. She stole the image from a black metal band, according to some fruitario at pitchfork. Seriously though, the image rules and it suits the record as East General is where Aerin and I both had our first babies.
We chose Mexican Summer because that fat shit Rick Rubin wouldn't sign us.

x Can we say, there is « canadian rock music scene » or are you considering yourselves as kind of american or english speaking scene ?
A: I'm American anyways. There is no rock music in Canada.

x What are the next plans? any gig in France?
I think we are playing Eurokenesse soon.

x What music/art do you know from France?
B: I know all about 1960's ageist lover shit, and the band DATA ROCK. My favourite book is STORY OF O (true fact).
A: Levinas, Sartre, Foucault

x Your last musical love….?
A: Kurt Cobain

B: Some pre teen from Les Miserables. I was also a pre teen then.

x We need a Local Joke please ?
The TTC. (local transit).

x Last Foggy party/memory/story ?

Ya my friend from a band with the initials HBF getting rammed doggystyle by a coked up stripper. Foggy as hell!

x Last Club you played ?

Costco and the Toronto Coffee Conspiracy.
