Blood Visions By Retard Records & Friends LP (tribute to Jay Reatard) and Happy Birthday Retard ! (english)

First of all, we’d like to wish a happy birthday to Retard Records as their first release came out 1 year ago. The World War 1, a handmade and heartmade K7 compilation, was a true blast by bringing together la crème of the french rock and roll scene and it definitely made us joyful at the time.
Then, they kept working on several releases, of course the sequel compilation World War II, in which other great european bands took part, K7 versions of the albums of our most beloved bands such as Kaviar Special, Sick Hyenas, Sapin (among others) and lately the LP of Qúetzal Snåkes (co released with Howlin Banana Records).

The Retard Records crew is located between Rennes and Marseille (respectively on the west coast and the south coast of France) and they fell into the rock and roll game thanks to our late Jay Reatard. Therefore, the logical consequence was to pay homage to the missed genius (who left us 5 years ago) by releasing a tribute album.

To mark the occasion, they asked all their friends to play from A to Z, the first and cult solo album of Jay, Blood Vision, released in 2006 via In The Red Records.


You can (and you must) listen to the record below, and buy the LP (only 300 copies) and / or the digital version.

Let’s go back to the music, what do we find in this record? Obviously some high quality fuzzy punk garage rock and roll, and moreover, cosmopolitan. Each band had probably grown by admiring Jay Reatard’s music and you can feel that each performance is certainly very personal, which makes the final result quite touching.

It’s also funny how this album takes us around the world, starting from Greece, with Bazooka and their greek and brilliant version of the opening song, Blood Vision („Aimatochysia“). The journey continues on some german roads with the dark Wolf Mountains and Hamburger’s Wunderkinder Sick Hyenas and their chillysurfy reinterpretation of We Who Wait. After a quick stop in Italy with Go!zilla, we’re crossing the Atlantic ocean to New Orleans and their newcomers Babes, to head to Chicago and join the nervous duo White Mystery and their buddies Holy Motors.

The french scene is of course there: the West Coast (La Bretagne) matches its reputation with all its killing bands, such as Combomatix, Kaviar Special, Sapin, Dragster, Lou et les Garçons and the allstars team Los Reatardos. And finally we enjoy meeting up with the south-psychedelic Qúetzal Snåkes, suburban Dusty Mush and our favorite countrysiders Volage who shut with brio these blood visions...

Tout d’abord, on souhaite un joyeux anniversaire à Retard Records car il y a un peu plus d'un an, paraissait leur 1ère sortie, la World War 1, compilation K7, faite à la main et avec le coeur par ces jeunes fous. Ici on aime bien les bonnes compiles et celle-ci arrivait à point nommé, en ralliant parfaitement la fine fleur de la scène rock and roll française, ce qui à l’époque nous remplit de joie.
S’en sont suivies plusieurs autres sorties, avec bien sûr une nouvelle compile World War II, s’ouvrant à d’autres formations européennes et aussi des versions K7 des albums de super groupes (Kaviar Special, Sick Hyenas, Sapin pour ne citer qu’eux) ou vinyle, à savoir l’album des Qúetzal Snåkes en coprod avec Howlin Banana Records.

Basés entre Rennes et Marseille, les mecs de Retard ont pris goût au rock and roll game à cause de feu Jay Reatard. Il semblait logique pour eux de rendre hommage à ce génie disparu trop tôt (il y a 5 ans déjà) en sortant un album " tribute ".

Donc, pour marquer le coup, ils ont rassemblé les copains pour rejouer de A à Z, le premier album solo de Jay, " Blood Vision " sorti en 2006 chez In The Red et devenu depuis culte pour beaucoup...

Avant de rapidement passer en revue la compile, vous pouvez (et devez) l’écouter ci-dessous, l’acheter en vinyle (édition limitée à 300 exemplaires) et / ou en digital.

Donc, revenons à nos moutons (noirs?), que trouve-t-on dans cet album? Du pur rock and roll de qualité bien sûr et cosmopolite qui plus est. Chaque groupe a sûrement connu et admiré Jay Reatard dans sa jeunesse et les différentes interprétations selon les caractères de chacun rendent le résultat assez touchant.

C’est presque un tour du monde qui partirait de Grèce, avec les Bazooka et leur version de Blood Vision dans leur langue natale ("Aimatochysia")... en prenant les routes germaniques vers les sombres Wolf Mountains et les wunderkinder hambourgeois Sick Hyenas et leur relecture chillsurf de "Whe Who Wait". Puis un petit saut en Italie avec les Go!zilla avant de traverser l’Atlantique vers la Nouvelle Orléans et les nouveaux venus Babes et de prendre la direction de Chicago pour rejoindre le duo énervé White Mystery et leur potes Holy Motors.

La scène française est évidemment là: en mode West Coast (La Bretagne) qui est bien représentée et toujours à hauteur de sa réputation de tueurs. Pour les citer, Combomatix, Kaviar Special, Sapin, Dragster, Lou et les Garçons et le super-groupe Los Reatardos, mettent tout le monde d’accord. Enfin, on retrouve avec plaisir les psyché-marseillais Qúetzal Snåkes, les banlieusards Dusty Mush et nos provinciaux préférés Volage qui clôturent avec brio ces visions sanguinaires...


Bref 15 bombes originales reprises par 15 des meilleurs groupes actuels. Que demande le peuple?
Cet album est à se procurer absolument, et on remercie la galaxie Retard and Friends pour ce bel hommage en étant convaincu que l’ami Jay appréciera d’où il est.

And so here it is, our " große " list for the end of the year.
Right in time to embellish your Xmas presents hunt and slip one or two very interesting pieces in your rotten Vans, tired Santiags, pierced and perforated Converses, dirty socks and Blue suede shoes under the tree.
So yes, once again it's unreadable but it's full of sincere love, joy and faith in humanity. Once again, again, no " top list " because it's too hard, too cold outside and the planet is in danger, but we swear on our mother's heads that you can pick, buy, listen any of those EP's, singles, albums, because they really touched and moved us deep in our groopies' hearts.

So a big "thanks" and many kisses to all the artists, bands, labels, roadies, venues, bars, clubs, record shops, DJ's, writers and well-advised audience.

Have all a nice Christmas/NYE time and let's meet again next year, we'll be less lazy, we swear. Keep faith.

Alors oui, c’est toujours illisible mais c’est plein d’amour, de joie et de foi en l’humanité. Encore une fois pas de top car c’est trop dur, il fait trop froid et la planète est en danger, mais nous vous assurons sur la tête de nos mères que vous pouvez piocher, acheter, ou juste écouter n’importe lequel de ces albums, Ep's, singles, car ils nous ont vraiment touché au plus profond de nos petits cœurs de rockeurs en cette année 2014.

Some fuzz, some reverb, saturated guitar and some thick rhythmic playing on simple riffs carried by all the energy of 3 wild and enraged wolves: this is the cocktail of Wolf Mountains. At first, you think you’re listening to an umpteenth psyché garage band from California but it is not the case, this is made in Germany. They started as a combo in 2012 with Rheinold and Kevin, one year later joined by Thomas. As they tell, everything started in Stuttgart, around some old squatted wagons today shut down. And you can feel that by diving into their new album « Birthday Songs For Paul ». It’s easy to imagine these 3 guys walking around the northern train station of the town, unfathomed and suitable to the composition of such disturbed songs…




They just broke their car during their European tour, but you can’t at least get their new album (out on cassette via Retard Records). And as soon as they’re back on the road, go and check them live, maybe they’ll bare fangs !

Du fuzz, de la réverb’, des guitares saturées et une rythmique dense qui joue sur des riffs plutôt simples mais portés par l’énergie de trois loups sauvages pour ne pas dire enragés, c’est le cocktail que nous a préparé Wolf Mountains. On croirait écouter un énième groupe de garage psyché californien mais il n’en est rien, ici tout est made in Germany. C’est sous forme de combo que le groupe démarre en 2012 entre Reinhold et Kevin avant d’être rejoint un an après par Thomas. Comme ils le disent eux mêmes, tout prit forme à Stuttgart, aux alentours de vieux wagons désaffectés transformés en squat disparus aujourd’hui. Et c’est vrai qu’en se plongeant dans l’album « Birthday Songs For Paul » qu’ils viennent tout juste de sortir, on imagine bien les trois potes déambuler dans la gare nord de la ville, abyssale mais propice à la composition de morceaux aussi dérangés que ceux des Wolf Mountains.




En pleine tournée européenne, on a profité de cette deuxième sortie (après « We are the future ») pour les faire passer par la case foggyview. « Birthday Songs For Paul » disponible dès maintenant sur Retard Records alors magne toi de chopper ta K7 ou au moins d’aller les voir en concert, ils passent sûrement à côté de chez toi. Ils sortiront peut-être même les crocs.

Sapin - Foggyview (english)

Sapin is the band from Brittany (France) that takes you on a trip to Road 66 with their nervy garage music, spiced up with some country rock energy escaped from the 60's, and some tunes like Wrong Way or Rock around the topic. But Sapin has many cartridges in their shotgun and also walks us on long lost hidden places with Lost Beach and Mama and their folk-ish melodies. We also find some surf music tendencies, but actually it's so boring to over repeat and try to find what genre they might belong to when Sapin delivers hybrid songs, dwelling with originality thanks to the timeless trio, bass, drums and guitar. More than that, they seem really far away from those labels one wants to stick to their forehead, they go by only one rule : "a DIY rock n' roll, and getting as much pleasure as we can out of it, and let’s see who digs it..."



With their first LP Wrong Way issued by Azbin Records and Beast Records, Sapin succeed in finding the perfect alchemy between those influences, with raging guitars reminding of the Black Lips or Growlers. It's no surprise that they've been invited to the Binic Folks Blues Festival this summer, followed by what we would expect to be a great tour for this not more than 2 years old band! It's not a first try though. Pierre, Duc and Zlat, started all together in Black Jack Davy and first draw their guns in the musical sphere, 8 years ago, but lacking time, the boys held on mute. Sapin takes advantage of it, and manages to create its own identity, for which you'll trade your boots for real cow boy boots, finally giving a meaning to the ridiculous cactus put on the table of your living room, because that at least, doesn't rot.

So go and chew some tobacco while flooding your guts with Desperados beer (out soon in the US we heard, stay tuned...), they love it. But most of all go shake some asses and hips to their gigs! All the dates are on their facebook page, and their EP's and LP's are for sale and available for listening and for free on their Bandcamp. They have plenty for you and your friends and they deserve it. And if you're not up to it yet, you might change your mind after reading this foggyview !

x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ?

Our goal is to create some songs we’d like to listen to. The first ambition is to play some stuff we find cool, it sounds stupid to say that but actually it’s not as obvious to do it well. With Sapin, we’re not coming up with anything new (oh yeah, really ?), we’re picking up some stuff here and there. Finally, each song is our own B side of one song we like.
The second ambition is that people would take pleasure by listening to our music, on their turntable, in their car or at our gigs.
If we can achieve that, it’s perfect for us !

x A picture ?



The other day and for the first time at one of our gig, a guy crowd surfed. We were so happy we didn’t sleep for three days because of that, so crazy ! So I can’t even imagine a gig with such a mess !


x Worst nightmare ?

To be invited at Hanouna’s tv show (a french early night show, ed. note), to put up with his shitty humour and his creepy commentators, I’m sure it would be a very traumatic experience.


x The place you enjoy the most ?

The dirty backstages of the bars we’re playing at. We congratulate each others, completely drunk and ask ourselves where all the groupies are and what Burger Records is waiting to release one of our records.

Sapin - Foggyview

Sapin, c'est le groupe des contrées bretonnes qui t'envoie sur la route 66 avec un garage pimenté d'une énergie rock country des années 60 sur des morceaux comme Wrong Way ou Rock around the Topic. 
Mais Sapin a plusieurs cartouches à son fusil et nous promène sur ses plages perdues avec Lost Beach ou Mama aux allures plus folk. On retrouve aussi des tendances surf, mais en fait c’est très chiant de rabâcher toutes ces étiquettes alors que Sapin parvient à nous donner des morceaux hybrides, créant toute l’originalité et la fraicheur du trio basse, guitare, batterie. 
D’ailleurs, ils sont bien loin de toutes ces étiquettes, ne revendiquant qu’une seule chose : un rock DIY dont le seul but est « prendre du plaisir, en se marrant et on verra bien à qui ça plaît ! ».




Avec leur LP Wrong Way sorti chez Azbin Records et Beast Records, Sapin réussi néanmoins à créer l’alchimie parfaite entre ces multiples influences, avec des riffs rappelant les Black Lips ou les Growlers. Pas étonnant de les voir au Binic Folks Blues Festival, on s’attend à une belle tournée pour ce jeune groupe d’à peine 2 ans ! 

Il faut dire qu’ils n’en sont pas à leur premier essai. C’est avec Black Jack Davy que Pierre, Duc et Zlat ont commencé à dégainer leurs armes dans la sphère musicale il y a 8 ans, mais faute de temps et de proximité le quintet reste un peu en standby. Sapin profite de ce bel héritage pour se forger un univers à part entière qui te donne envie de troquer tes boots contre des santiags et qui donne tout son sens au cactus de chez GamVert que t’as posé vulgairement sur ta table basse, parce que ça au moins, ça pourrit pas.

Alors n’hésite pas à aller chiquer ton tabac et boire ta Despe avec eux, ils adorent ! Mais surtout, bouge-toi devant leurs concerts, toutes les dates sur leur page facebook et leurs EP, LP en écoute sur le bandcamp, tu peux même leur acheter des vinyles pour toi et tous tes amis, ils le méritent. En attendant, console-toi avec la foggyview !

x Votre définition du rock and roll ou de la musique ?

Le but c'est de créer des chansons qu'on aimerait bien écouter. La première des ambitions c'est de jouer quelque chose que nous trouvons cool, ça paraît tout con mais c'est pas si évident. Dans Sapin, on invente rien (ah bon ? sans dec' !) , on pioche des trucs à droite et à gauche. Au final chaque chanson est notre face B d'une chanson qu'on aime bien.
La deuxième des ambitions, c'est que des gens prennent du plaisir à nous écouter, sur leurs platines, dans leurs bagnoles ou en concert. Si on y parvient c'est parfait !


x Une image ?



L'autre jour, pour la première fois un mec a fait un slam pendant qu'on jouait, on en a pas dormi pendant trois jours. Trop ouf ! Alors j'imagine même pas un concert dans une ambiance pareille.


x Pire cauchemar ?

Passer chez Hanouna, supporter son humour de merde et ses chroniqueurs moisis, ça doit être une sacrée expérience traumatisante.


x Un endroit préféré ?

Les loges pourries des rades dans lesquels on joue, on s'auto-congratule complètement bourrés en se demandant où ont bien pu passer les groupies et ce qu'attend Burger Records pour sortir un de nos albums.

Dragster - Foggyview (english)

We all noticed that for some time now, Rennes (Brittany, France) is building a strong garage rock and roll scene that is worth just as much as what’s happening in and outside France. Dragster is the drummer and the bassist of Rigg, who decided to form their own band, since their ex-colleague has left to London and then came back with Madcaps and Catfight. Indeed, it’s a little bit complicated, but to resume, Rennes is like a swingers club. Most of the bands are friends, making up and breaking up, and everybody loves it. And it smells like sweat as well…

Dragster throw some primitive rock which breaks your neck and each time I see them, it seems "Grototo" will explode his drum and Clément will end deaf because of his frenetic riffs… To be unbiased, some accidents already happened but both buddies now overcome their violent and fuzzy garage. From the first « ooh ooh ah ah » of the song “Lou L’enfer chasseur de dragons”, I feel some wild urges which makes me want to become Conan the Barbarian, holding a lager instead of a sword.

After having played with Magnetix at Mondo Bizarro, White Mystery at the Sympatic bar (RIP) and for the Tattoo Convention at Stade Rennais, they’re heading to a one month tour around France (here is the detail). They will also release a limited edition cassette « GANJA WAR » via Six Tonnes de Chair but for now you can listen to some of their songs on the freshly released Hamburger Saignant comp (Frantic City Records) and on their bandcamp.




" Hi, this is Dragster, with Clément playing well guitar and Thomas, trying to play well drums. We’re currently sitting on our sofa, 4 place Sainte Anne, Rennes and we’re basically play some « primitive » garage as the old people would say. We’re playing 2.30 min songs (not much), with larsen, fuzz guitar and minimal rhythm. Concerning the singing part, we’re telling some cool stories about sex and hamburgers and our favorite hobby is to chill out on our sofa watching reality TV shows. "


x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ?

We can’t say that we’re really open-minded people, but for us, music must be fuzzy, from the 60’s till today. Rock and roll, and most particularly, « garage », is not to play in big venue or be played on big radios, we don’t care. To play in a shithole and messing around is what gives us a boner.

x Worst nightmare ?

To support La Rue Ketanou or this kind of band. It will never happen but the very idea of it scares me so much. And by the way, the worst thing which happened for us is already in Kaviar Special’s interview, but at the end, I kind of think that there is a fun side to run barefoot on the highway.


x The place you enjoy the most ?

We’re not fussy people, so it can be a living room, a sofa… But I think our favorite place is Rennes (Brittany, France). So much things are going on there, the energy of this city is crazy. All of the garage bands are cool and there is plenty of places to have fun.

For us, this is the basis. We still didn’t find a better album. We can say that Coachwhips made us want to form Dragster, this is our main influence.

Perfect album, perfect concert, perfect energy.

Dragster – Foggyview

On l’a tous remarqué, Rennes se bâtit depuis quelques années une scène rock and roll à tendance garage qui n’a rien à envier à ses homologues nationaux. Dragster, c’est le batteur et le bassiste de Rigg qui ont fait leur truc à deux, après le départ du troisième qui est parti à Londres mais qui est revenu avec Madcaps et Catfight. Ouais, c’est un peu compliqué, mais en fait le garage à Rennes, c’est un peu comme dans un club échangiste. Les groupes sont tous plus ou moins potes, se forment et se déforment, mais tout le monde prend son pied, et le public en redemande ! (ok, un peu pardon pour la comparaison...) Ah oui, et ça sent la sueur aussi...

Avec Dragster, le combo envoie un rock primitif à t’en déboîter les cervicales, à chaque fois j’ai l’impression que Grototo va exploser sa batterie avec ses baguettes, et que Clément va finir par s’éclater les tympans avec ses riffs frénétiques. Même s’il y a eu quelques accidents, inévitables si on fait preuve d’un minimum d’objectivité, les deux acolytes arrivent à maîtriser leur garage qui déborde de fuzz, de la violence juste comme il faut. Dès les premiers "ouh ouh ah ah" du morceau “Lou L’enfer chasseur de dragons”, je sens des pulsions sauvages qui me donnent envie de jouer à Conan le barbare (ou Conanne ?), avec une lager à la main plutôt qu’une épée.

Après avoir joué notamment aux côtés des Magnetix au Mondo Bizarro, White Mystery au regretté Sympatic (pensée émue) et au Stade Rennais pour la Tattoo Convention, Dragster part en tournée un mois “un peu partout autour de la France”. Ils sortent une K7 en édition limitée GANJA WAR avec Six Tonnes de Chair mais tu peux aussi les retrouver sur la compile Hamburger Saignant de Frantic City Records qui vient de sortir. Regarde bien sur leur bandcamp et facebook, ils passent surement bientôt à côté de chez toi !




" Salut c'est Dragster, Clément, qui joue bien de la guitare, et Thomas, qui fait semblant de bien jouer de la batterie.
On est dans mon canap, 4 place Sainte Anne 35000 Rennes et on fait du garage « primitif », comme disent les vieux. On joue des morceaux de deux minutes trente pas plus, accompagné de larsens, guitare fuzz et batterie minimaliste. En ce qui concerne le chant, on raconte des histoires cool avec du sex et des hamburgers dedans! Sinon notre activité préférée c’est de chiller sur mon canapé en regardant de la télé réalité. "


x Votre définition du rock and roll ou de la musique ?

On peut pas dire qu’on soit très ouvert, mais pour nous la musique faut qu’elle soit à base de fuzz, des sixties à aujourd’hui. Après pour nous le rock, et plus particulièrement le « garage », ce n’est pas de jouer dans de grosses salles ou faire de grosses radios, ça nous intéresse pas. Jouer dans un rade et foutre le bordel c’est ça qui nous fait bander.

x Pire cauchemar ?

Jouer en première partie de La Rue Ketanou, ou un truc du genre quoi. Ça n’arrivera jamais mais rien que d’y penser j’en ai des frissons. Et le pire truc qui nous soit arrivé est déjà dans l’interview des Kaviar Special, mais je sais pas si finalement c’est le pire truc qui nous soit arrivé. Il y a quand même un côté fun à courir pieds nus sur l’autoroute.


x Un endroit préféré ?

On est pas difficile, un salon, un canap’... Notre endroit préféré je crois que c'est Rennes. Il s'y passe pleins de trucs, l'énergie de cette ville est folle ! Tous les groupes de garage sont cool, et puis y'a pleins d'endroits pour aller s'amuser !

Pour nous c’est la base. On a pas encore réussi à trouver un album mieux que ça. Et puis c’est Coachwhips qui nous a donné envie de monter Dragster, c’est notre plus grosse influence.

- Reatards - Teenage Hate :
Cet album est parfait quand tu as envie de tout casser, et Jay Reatard quoi, que dire de plus...

No hood, but fishing nets for Howlin Banana and Azbin Records, at the end of this year. In talented fishermen they realize a very nice catch, as well as catching our attention, in the coolest manner, the Kaviar Special. 
Straight from the breeding pool that is Rennes (french city in Brittany), as well as their basin brethren (Catfight, Rigg, Blackjag Davy, Bikini George, Sapin…), we could have assumed their sound to be delicate, as the delicacy they’re named after… That’s not really what’s happening. Still, and « Oh joy ! », it will proudly take place on your table, between the « foie gras » and the oysters, for the french here at least, on the christmas table. Ok, maybe not on the table, but for sure in your ears. They went through enough bullshit all year long, not to reward them with something good. 

« Special », that they are. More than just torturing the fuzz and the good vibes like no one else, we feast on their melodies like Dating A Slut, Summer, Shirley, Ptit Cul or Sabadidon ( we could easily feast on all of them actually, because much more than being just « good » they sum up everything we like about the rock scene these days). 

Precious, also, for it’s been so long we were waiting for something wild and dirty out of the capital of Brittany. That, my friends, is done. And we are happy. And we are filled, but not enough to pass on devouring this delicious white vinyl coming out on the 10th of December.

« We started in the beginning of 2012. We four, were living together in a house in Rennes, Brittany, and used to rehearse in the garage (we’re playing garage, the real one). We’re influenced by punk and sixties music but especially the modern era like Burger Record, In The Red Records etc… »


x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ? or describe how do you feel when you're doing music?

When you keep on listening to bands, and going to gigs, it makes you want to create something , to write a song, to put some arrangements here and there.
It just depends on one or two bands and then it click, you’re getting into it, you compose, you play, where you can.
For me, Rock and Roll is the 50’s, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley etc…
Today it doesn’t really mean anything. Like a tattoo of Johnny Hallyday is rock and rollish…


x A picture?



Los Saicos. Four Peruvians who released a megastylish album in 1964. Lost in deepest Peru, nobody really understands from what they could put out this so dirty and wild sound. They only were influenced by british bands from the 60’s but I really think they influenced a lot of people. Demolicion ! is an incredible song where they explain that they want to blow up the noisy train station next to their place that keeps them from rehearsing properly. This is definitely an anthem.


x Worst nightmare ?

When we were touring last summer, driving at like 80 mph on the highway, the back doors of our van suddenly opened… The trunk was full with all our instruments and stuff. So we stopped on the emergency lane, freaked out, and fortunately there was just one guitar missing ! It was 3 in the morning, the highway was desert and we hurried to find grab the guitar back before a car would run over it. Like a miracle, it was intact even not out of tune… In my head, I was already seeing all our amps crushed on the road and a big pile-up… That would have been a fucking nightmare…


x The place you enjoy the most?

« Cocoon », it’s a studio, not really far from Rennes. We’re hanging out there to record, rehearse, jam, sip some cocktails and juggle. Laid back.

- Bare Wires - Idle Dreams
Matthew Melton is a genius, tyrannical but genius.

- Ramones - Ramones 
The pure and authentic energy. This album is incredible. I never heard anything else that would hit me like that. Sniffing some glue and not the slightest guitar solo.

 - Harlem - Hippies
Harlem is the kind of band which makes you confident. They have amazing melodies, you can feel that there is no brain racking, it’s so spontaneous, it’s beautiful. It makes you want to chill with them. I think they split, that´s a shame.

- Dead Ghosts - Can't get no
