Iceage - Frihed og broderskab / Route du Rock 2013 (english version)

Iceage sustain the mystery, that's for sure.
Outsiders of La Route du Rock 2013 edition, they stood in for new yorkers DIIV who had cancelled their european tour a few months back.
If those are undeniably good, I was thrilled that the danish were coming, even though our first meeting after the show, was a bit frosty.
Given the amount of good and bad stress these guys must endure, you understand their attitude. Some will mistake it for arrogance, I think it might be suspicion, considering how they started and the controversy that their provoking symbolism set off.
We will spare you the details of the press conference which was not really worthy of interest.

“Somehow things are still not lost
But I sure feel alienated
Is their flesh disintegrated
These days I'm numb and faded” – Coalition (You’re Nothing – 2013)

Foggy Girls Club's short story being closely related to Iceage, it is interesting to look back at the past few years.
My first contact with the band dates back to 2011, after their 1st LP "New Brigade" came out, thanks to the late webzine Altered Zones and a bunch of articles mentioning a brand new Northern wind.
"New Brigade", frontal impact, adrenaline explosion… Who are these savages? What do they want? How do I get another fix?

Then came Escho and Tambourhinoceros, two Copenhagen-based labels who took charge of the youngsters. What happened next was simple : I ordered the LP, it came in a pizza box, we exchanged a few e-mails and I've kept, ever since, a warm connection with these people -and this town- who have allowed me to discover this thriving danish scene they stand up for (Thulebasen, CTM, Lower, New Spring, etc…).

The Escho/Iceage relationship is strong and definitive :
”They were there from the start when we were kind of useless. They held us to get something done. We knew these guys way way before we did music in a more serious constellation. So basically they’re just friends and at one point they just put it out. And if it wasn’t for Escho I think we wouldn’t be as much as active and playing as much as we are. They definitely make sure that we don’t just sit on our asses… “

Posh Isolation is also worth mentioning as another pioneer Copenhagen label, who put out their tape : “Posh Isolation is a mainly industrial music label but they also product punk and weird stuff from Copenhagen scene. So they also help young boys that does something in rehearsal room to make it exist I guess.

“Parallel crossing lines
I don't want to fall behind
Is it too much to cope
Not running down an empty hole” - New Brigade (album S/T 2011)

To sum up, here's a bunch of young danish guys who started a band, released an album and caused a ripple : a modern punk classic that became a favorite on many record players.

Of course, things shook up and they aroused a lot of interest. They're pretty straightforward about it :
“We had a bunch of possibilities but they all seemed to be quite horrible. Matador seemed to be the more honest out there. And we signed with them and later maybe found out that it wasn’t the case anyway, but now we’re stuck with them.”
This honesty and sharp opinion on such a cult label (and big machine) as Matador, stand out from the usual bullshit, like some kind of conscious innocence proudly and firmly bearing their vision of art.
“About large label, it’s not that it’s horrible but it’s just that we, as individuals, have differences with them, it’s like misconception about how you should get people to listen to your music. (…). We’re interested in reaching a broader audience (…) but it’s like everything has a dollar sign at the end. So it doesn’t really make sense for us.”

Now on to the music. Their second album, "You're Nothing" came out early this year and notably affirmed that our friends were not just a flash in the pan but a genuine black diamond. Joyful in a half-light, it proves to be extremely inspiring. It leaves you disorientated, faced with something great. The piercing compositions and sharp lyrics, carried by a sometimes furious, sometimes moving chant, evoke flashes of heartache and frustration you'd just want to blow up with great spirit and revenge.
To dig up old feelings buried deep within, one of the greatest albums of the year.

“A mere blow of wind could turn me into light
Hands everywhere covering me
Feels so overwhelming I can't breathe
But bliss is momentary anyhow
Yet worth living for - take me now” - Ecstasy (You’re Nothing – 2013)

But let's get back to the Fort de Saint-Père in Saint Malo. On this 15th of August 2013, the sun is looking over as we are walking to the big stage. The young danish are about to open the festival, following Jacco Gardner's lulling melodies.
Dressed in black, they are quietly setting up to start their fierce performance. Not being very famous in France, and having played almost only in Paris, it might be a little difficult to win over the breton crowd, nonetheless present despite the early hour.
Nevermind. "Awake", the vampires surely are and their battle against sunlight is starting.
They are spitting it out and the scorching heat, hitting full face, will not stop them.
Angel-faced Elias Bender Rønnenfelt has tremendous charisma. In a perpetual inner struggle, he weaves in and out of his band's sonic shots to lighten them up with his occult, fascinating flame. 45 minutes of rage and they're gone. It was good, it was strong.

“I imagine that this is how it would feel to drown in light.”- Count Me In – Sexdrome cover (New Brigade 2011)

I then reach to their manager/papa bear, Nis. Half of Escho and a Copenhagen music activist, I've met him before, via his excellent band Thulebasen.

Hours and drinks go by in a nice and hearty atmosphere, unlike the beginnings. We talk about everything, from travel to food, Aqua, the nazi dude in Ace of Base etc… I keep teasing Nis about the next Thulebasen album. It's a mystery, him being busy enough recording his friends, it's hard to find the time to complete his own project.

To get back to Iceage, it's a group of honest young people and that you can't take away from them. They're a little abashed at the media circus around them. They know where they came from and what they want. For sure, their songs have carried us away and will carry us again for a long time to their northern parts, no matter the destination, only the journey is important as long as they are the soundtrack.

On my way back, I think about "New Brigade" that still gives me the chills.

"It’s within me, it’s within you, it’s within me and you"… (New Brigade - 2011)

English version here.

“Somehow things are still not lost
But I sure feel alienated
Is their flesh disintegrated
These days I'm numb and faded” – Coalition (You’re Nothing – 2013)

“Parallel crossing lines
I don't Want To Fall Behind
Is It Too Much To Cope
Not Running Down An Empty Hole” - New Brigade (album S/T 2011)

“A mere blow of wind could turn me into light
Hands everywhere covering me
Feels so overwhelming I can't breathe
But bliss is momentary anyhow
Yet worth living for - take me now” - Ecstasy (You’re Nothing – 2013)

“I imagine that this is how it would feel to drown in light.”- Count Me In – Sexdrome cover (New Brigade 2011)

"It’s within me, it’s within you, it’s within me and you"… (New Brigade - 2011)

City Sounds Festival – Edition San Francisco – 19-20/07/2012 – Le 104 / Paris - Thee Oh Sees, White Fence, Ty Segall...

TY SEGALL (ONE MAN BAND)

////////////////////////////////////////////

Samedi 20/07 à partir de 20h00

SHANNON & THE CLAMS

WARM SODA

THEE OH SEES

Halasan Bazar‘s Foggy Bootleg Report at Aalhaus / Hamburg + DIY video footage "Tin Foiled" & "This Time"

Pic by Alexandre Saada

Version française ici

It is certain, this year will be marked by a Danish stone! Well not quite (since only three out of six members are Danish), but marked for sure by Halasan Bazar.

Remember. It was April. L’Espace B, Foggy Girls Club and Hartzine were offering you the concert of the Nordics for the first time in Paris, with the Scottish PAWS.

The weather wasn’t quite nice, not quite warm either, but it was of no importance because from the first to the last note, Fred, Carl Craig, Christian and Jakob knew how to take us far away perfectly from the gray and melancholy, in tides of psyche-crazy-folkish-daydreamt cavalcades, oneiric and incantatory melodies and yet still very real and tangible in addition to being perfectly executed.

Interlude. A month long interlude.

10.05.2013: We are in Hamburg. The weather is (surprisingly) a little nicer, a little warmer, but we know it will still have no importance while entering the charming Aalhaus whose also charming owners run in parallel the excellent hamburger label, Cloud Hills…

The place is perfect, intimate. An inviting terrace surrounded by trees, inside, no scene, a few tables, a few chairs and a pile of instruments almost all entrenched against a wall. Three bands are playing tonight and it really needed some space. If they could have pushed the walls they’d probably have.

Surprisingly a very frenchy selection is proposed. First to play, Aurélien Merle (acoustic solo) followed Léonore Boulanger and her musicians.

If you read us you know how we are not what we could call, „driven by chauvinism“, but here, the surprise was rather good as Aurélien Merle and his so peculiar finger play astonished the whole audience, when Léonore Boulanger possessed the Aalhaus with her chamanic, nomad universe and bewitching chants and instruments.

From a totally uneducated point of view we could compare it, for the more francophile of you, to an early  Areski and Brigitte Fontaine or old stuff from Dick Annegarn... Is it "chanson française underground"? Might be, but this was for sure a nice experience that we are not used to in France.

A few more beers and the room is filled.Gathered around what is not a scene the connoisseurs rehearse their favorite discrete moves. We see a hip moving, a foot timidly starting a tempo but most of all we see the smiles, as if people were aware of what's coming.

Finally, the first notes, and the bigger smiles. We need nothing more, we’re already taking off...

"Live Without Love" starts this gig perfectly. It will never leave our heads. The Danish give us those gold nuggets of their own, dug out of their two masterpieces How To Be Ever Happy (Moon Glyph) and their last one Space Junk freshly out on Crash Symbols.

It’s incredible how this band is able to deliver so much hapiness in such sureness. Reinsuring we would say. Comfortable, comfortably accurate and perfect. They manage to take us with them on their space ship, for a good warm journey, but eh, you know them right?
One more time Theis, their sound ingeneer has succed in the hard task of balancing every instrument perfectly in such a small place. We can hear everything and everything sounds great.
Here comes "Tin foiled". Just before, this girl grabbed the setlist but the wild appropriation doesn’t seem to bother them at all. In fact, Halasan Bazar is playing tonight the last show of their short european tour before heading back to Copenhagen. Both say they know their setlist like the back of their pick... So "Tin Foiled“ and as promised, this is the getaway, the great escape, the beautiful one, the trip. The walls are fading away we are plugged into Fred Eckhoff’s mind. We grab a note and jump on its back, bareback. From there, we let everything go with the minutes and the songs. It’s a colourful and rhythmic journey across melodic landscapes offered by the band, always precisely portrayed and varnished with those touches of serendipity that makes the best shows.

We captured something DIY just for you, but be sure it’s million times better in real.

Brutal hit from the nightstick of reality. The police shows up. The Aalhaus is summed to lower the volume (this is a residential neighbourhood). The show must stop. One or two songs more to land in softness because that’s what they are, softness. The notes are fading, silence, ..., for half a second, and soon the rapturous applause of the audience, unbridled, a little sad not to be allowed to ask for "another"one.

But how to push a group of Nordics and make of the end of this night, the end of this tour a memorable finish ?

Answer: Beer. (surprisingly this tip can be usefull for many nations, not only Nordics)

A few drinks and a few hours later and Halasan Bazar, Fredrik ahead, propose to finish with an acoustic performance, the song they didn’t have time or chance to play during the concert:
" This Time ".

We went home in joy, "rendez-vous" made "pour foutre le Bazar" (ed. create havoc) for their next Parisian gig.

- Halasan Bazar : New LP Space Junk (Crash Symbols), on tour this summer and probably in France in october…
- Aalhaus (Hamburg)

Halasan Bazar‘s Foggy Bootleg Report à l'Aalhaus / Hambourg + Extrait vidéo DIY "Tin Foiled" & "This Time"

Pic by Alexandre Saada

English version here

"Live Without Love" débute parfaitement.

English Version here

x 3 albums:

- Nirvana - Nevermind
- Replacements - Let it Be
- Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

x Une citation:

(A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be.)

Wayne Gretzky

x Discographie:

- Split 7” with Assassins 88 (2011 - Dream Damage Records)

- Split 7” with Assassins 88 & Catholic Spray (2011 - XVIII Records)

TV COLOURS – Foggyview + track premiere “Beverly” (english)

Version française ici.

Let's get warm by heading to Canberra in Australia to discover TV COLOURS.
Bobby Kill is hiding behind that project and  is kind of an activist of the local Canberra's scene since some time now with others band like Danger Beach, Assassins 88 or The Fighting League.
He's going to release his first LP Purple Skies, Toxic River on the great parisian label XIII Records (june 2013).
This is with a certain pleasure that we have the privilege to make you listen to one of the song, and what a song!

Beverly is a hit with the fuzzy and DIY TV COLOURS' touch. The melody is crazily heady and it makes anybody in a fucking good mood. We're really looking forward to listen to the whole record and for your information TV COLOURS will tour in France next september.

While we're waiting for that, Bobby give us some thoughts...

x What is your definition of rock and roll or music ? or describe how do you feel when you're doing music?

Rock and roll is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s.
Purple Skies, Toxic River is the first Rock N Roll record in 53 years, next year I am being inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio, it is very exciting, Metallica will be doing a medley of their favourite TV COLOURS songs to open the show.
I requested that Dave Mustaine be put back in the band, I feel his pain you know, I cry myself to sleep at night just like him, “what could have been?” “What could have been?” just ringing round in my head, like ghosts, haunting me, LARS NO! NOOOOO! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Anyway, they declined.

x A picture?

This is Danger Beach mastermind and TV COLOURS bassist L.A Thomas arriving to band rehearsal.

x Your (favorite) worst nightmare ?

I am walking down the street I grew up on and weather is very very calm, everything is silent except for the sound of a distant car driving up the road.
Then, without a moments notice the whole street is engulfed in flames and I am suddenly being chased by A Teri Hatcher version of the T-800 (Terminator 2). She starts to get closer and closer and you can hear the heavy clunking of her metal frame catching up to me, it is very stressful.
Just as she is about to catch me A white flash goes off and suddenly I am riding a tri-cycle down a singular road that is bordered each side with rocks and at the end of the road is the ocean, everything is very calm again and I can hear seagulls and the sounds of the sea.

Everytime I have this dream I get bigger and the tri-cycle gets smaller.

x The place you enjoy?

The place I enjoy the most is being at the shopping mall at Christmas Time. Everyone is spending money and buying things. A long time ago my Father taught me that the key to happiness is through the acquisition of material possessions, my only way to repay him for such a lesson is to pass on this wisdom to as many people as I can.

x 3 records:

- Nirvana - Nevermind
- Replacements - Let it Be
- Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

x The Quote:

"A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be."

Wayne Gretzky

The Babies + Big Deal + Spectral Park en concert à Paris (Point FMR) 28/05/2013 + Concours places

THE BABIES
(USA – Woodsist)

Les New Yorkais ont sorti leur deuxième album l’an passé, le très bon Our House on the Hill (Woodsist) enregistré avec Rob Barbato (Darker My Love, The Fall, Cass McCombs).

A suivre donc…

SPECTRAL PARK
(UK – Mexican Summer )

White Fence - The Fall and the Rise – Interview (eng) 3/3

Pic ©Angel Ceballos

Version française ici

So it's still before this wonderful show of the 10th of last december that we had the chance to meet the Californian Tim Presley aka White Fence, by himself, this time. This night, we had our eyes, our ears, our hearts blasted by a way more than generous performance.

It is not a secret that he wasn't ever really far from us, or the other way around.
We first were introduced to Tim in 2010 through numerous enterprises. His first album under the name of White Fence (Make a mess Records), sort of an UFO album we fell in love with right away. Scratching its lo-fi crust we were soon to meet his universe abounding with ideas, beautiful songs, sincerity and infinite richness. It is well rare to listen to such a musician that can give this kind of consistency and colour to the sound as he can.
This same year, he also came out with an album with his other, more known, band Darker my Love, the underrated Alive as you are. He also gave more than a hand to his friends, The Strange Boys, on Be Brave.
A few collaborations later, he confirmed with Is Growing Faith (2011, Woodsist), an album that became a classic in no more than two years. Then came the Family Perfume 1&2 (2012, Woodsist), some psychedelic walk around, however accurately aware, and Hair (2012, Drag City) with Ty Segall which, as you could have figured, couldn't be anything else but one of our favorite albums.

In the meantime, Tim finds the time to raise a label (Birth records) under which he recently signed Jessica Pratt and her beautiful first album. But today he also took the time to answer our questions. This is the third and the final part of our interview in three acts: White Fence, The Fall and the rise.
(Part I here, Part II here)

x White Fence is really linked to Los Angeles isn’t it?

Tim: There is a gang called White Fence, one of the oldest gang in LA. In fact, they’re the first latino gang. In the 20’s, all the emigrants were in a gang, like jewish, irish, mexican, all in a same gang. And then White Fence was the first to be all latino.
Historically they were first punk rockers in a way. Like in the 30’s, 40’s they were big in the Zoo Suit thing, which was a kind of “Fuck You” against American society. They didn’t join the navy and they were dressed a little wild. This was kind of like the Mohawk movement in the 90’s (Oka crisis).

I read a lot about the gangs, I’m really into it, the history of them and just like culture. Especially the older ones like in New York with the Five Points Gang in the 1800’s… it’s really interesting…

As we talked about that with Guillaume from The Feeling Of Love, White Fence is also kind of this juxtaposition between the gang life which is very violent, bad and evil. But there is like a kind of very strong bond, family oriented bond and love.
Whereas there is the typical 50’s style white American picket fence in the suburbs, with wealthy families, mom, dad, children, nice house, money... Sometimes, it looks perfect but inside of it, it can be evil with hurtful and mean people.
So it’s like this kind of Yin Yan of these things. I thought that was interesting.

x You seemed to already have several musical life till now… how do you see it?

Tim: It’s all really different, you know like, Darker My Love is a band, with everyone, like a snake with five heads… me and Rob Barbato as songwriters. For The Strange Boys, I wasn’t a full time member so it’s just like a fun thing to do and help. The Fall is the same thing. The Nerve Agents was (laughs) the first one, and that was just fun, kids just fucking going crazy kind of thing…
White Fence is completely 100% me, that’s the only difference. The recording, writing, putting all together, it’s just me.

x What about Darker My Love?

T: Well, we’ve done it for so long and we toured extensively… We just kind of like have a big break or hiatus or something. It’s not over like we’re not broken up. It’s just that for now I wanna do what I’m doing with White Fence and they have things that they’re doing.
They’re currently playing with Cass McCombs. Actually Cass McCombs’ band at one point was all the members of Darker My Love except for me (laughs)…
So you know, everyone’s doing their own thing, trying different things and sometimes it feels good to do others things.

Could you talk about your relation with legendary Mark E Smith as you played with his mythic The Fall? (Tim and Rob Barbato from Darker My Love were take on by Mark E Smith for a US tour and a record, Reformation Post TLC).

T: I just talked to him the other day. They were on tour so we tried to connect and hang out but it was like they’re going this way, we’re going this way… so we’re still friends.

Because you did a tour in the US lately, didn’t you?

T: No, the tour in America was in 2006 or 2007. But I came back here last November (2011) for a month, and did like 10 shows.

x How does it work between young musicians like you (and Rob from Darker My Love), with Mark E Smith who have a special reputation?

T: Well it was natural for me because I grew up with punks and stuff like that. Rob didn’t but he’s very professional and Mark likes professional so it just clicked.
Actually, at the first show we were playing, I was like “ Oh thank you so much” like I was such a big fan or whatever… And he was like “Enough of the fucking asskissing, go fucking soundcheck!” I was like “Oh shit!” (laughs) so ever since that day, the first day, I was like, oh I’m not gonna say anything like that again. But we became friends and that’s cool.
I think he liked our American rock ways. Supposedly it’s different maybe… He thinks that English musicians are lazy, egotistical… And we just fucking wanted get it done, you know what I mean, cowboy up dude, let’s do it!

x Does he know about White Fence?

T: Yeah definitely! In fact on that last tour last November, he went off stage because of his fever hurting in a middle of a set in Glasgow. He was like “Go down and play… The Love Between!” so we just did it instrumentally, it was so embarrassing (laughs)… He wanted to rest so I had to play fucking The Love Between…
I learned a lot of him and I respect him and when we drink we get weird together (laughs).

x Do you belong to the San Francisco scene now? like the Castle Face Records family?

T: (laughs) Yeah! I’m actually putting out an LP on Castle Face Records called "Cyclops Reap" which will be out in March hopefully as well as limited 7" single with an LP track and two unreleased songs. This will be a split release with Birth Records / Castle Face Records.
And yeah I’m on the new Grouplex comp.

Fresh & Onlys, Sic Alps, Thee Oh Sees, etc… It’s a good syndicate of sound.
I don’t know how anyone does it, no one has any money (laughs).
But I don’t know, you have to be hungry man to make pure art, and uncomfortable and sad… I don’t know, it’s like artists like being tortured… (laughs)

x You’re part of a generation of musicians who are doing music differently , not linked to a indie or major music business but with a faithful audience. And it seems that there is a lot of friendship amongst that…

T: I think it’s more honest.
And you have to understand that I went through that so I know first-hand. Like with Darker My Love. Like “playing the game”, “You have to play this show… it’s good for promotion…” and then you do it and you just feel so sold as this is horrible. The money advances, tour support… I’ve been through that.
I’m happier like that. I think I can be more myself. Not as much money, but happier. It’s a weird thing, I just know that I can be free, in my room, and do it.

In 2012, there was your collaboration with Ty Segall for the record “Hair”. It was great to see 2 different artists doing such a great album…

T: Right, that’s why it works so well.
Ty is younger than me and I think at the time, I was writing more folksier thing, you know White Fence stuff, sometimes it can be soft.
And just being around him brings out this energy that I always had. It’s always there but sometimes it takes something or someone to pull it out.
For example there was years where my bible was The Pretty Things, that was just it, like more than the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. All of it. He brought that kind of thing out of me, but also other stuff I was really into like The Germs…
I think he brought out the primal caveman rock in me, and maybe I pulled out his weirder sides… If you have two people too much the same, it might be boring.
And he’s so enthusiastic with making music... It’s really fun making music with him, because we’re also very similar in some ways. It’s like go and do it and don’t think too much about it. It was like the same process, it’s so weird, very strange, like magical…

x Will there be a sequel?

T: Yeah, we’re gonna it do when I’ll get back. We’re gonna try and record some stuff.

x The new album, Cyclops Reap, on Castle Face Records is a very good news, could you talk about it?

T: I did the same process than for the previous. Because for Family Perfume (Vol1&2), I had so many songs, and I needed help like I just couldn’t.
Ty kind of helped me, he made up the track list together for the volume 1, and I was like “oh this is great, yeah”.
It helped me to be able to put together the second one. This is hard because there is still songs that are unreleased...
So I did actually the same thing with John Dwyer (Thee Oh Sees & Castle Face Records) for the forthcoming one. I just kind of threw thirty songs , I don’t know, and he picked like ten or whatever (laughs).
It helps because even if I don’t choose the ones he does, at least I have an idea like I guess those ones are goods.

You have to understand that I do this every day, writing and recording, it’s like a sickness, it’s weird. And I’m so in it that I have no perspective on what’s good anymore.
For example, I write a song which is my favorite song ever written and then, a week later, I write another one but this one is new now so I like this one better. But in reality the other one’s better… I always have been in a band with people to help with that so because it’s all me… it’s difficult. I wish I could but I need help man (laughs).

x Your songs seem to be very free, unbound, unhampered, unleashed and very different on stage…

T: When I’m writing and recording it at home, I never ever think about how it would translate live. Ever.
It’s purely just make it sounds as close as possible. I don’t think about an extra step. So when we do play live, maybe this is the punk hardcore root, but I just want to have it more intense rather than arty or something.
It’s hard for me to be on stage and not feel that way. Rock and roll. For better or for worst.
People might not like it or like it, I don’t know, but then I can’t help it. I can’t go up there and pretend. On stage I just want to “ahhhh”.

x What is the “growing faith” (Is Growing Faith is the title of the 2nd album and of a song from it) ? I’m also thinking about these lyrics « I’d sing this song for my weakness » (I’d sing on Family Perfume vol. 2)…

T: The “Growing Faith” thing is my own faith in myself.
This is also this kind of little conceptual thing I appreciate in art which is like just do it, keep doing it. Like try, even if no one is watching. Because I think that at the end of your life you know you wish you had. That’s the only thing that can suit your soul and make you a happy person. Doing your creative things. And if you’re not creative artistically, whatever it is…
And that that line « I’d sing this song for my weakness », is more about like trying to write the perfect song … and I haven’t…
